“This is my husband’s elder sister. She runs a chain catering company and helped fund my shop a lot.” Amy’s eyes welled up when she saw the elder sister who had always taken good care of her. Thinking about everything she had been through, she really felt an urge to pour out her feelings.
The soldier who had finished questioning earlier was quite tactful. He didn’t try to recruit Feng Yiyou on the spot, instead giving them space and time to meet. However, he remained standing by the doorway, suggesting he was still keeping watch.
The somewhat plump, middle-aged woman appearing around forty approached Amy, asking warmly about her well-being and sighing deeply.
Though she commanded many people daily and had already moved into New Alice’s upper class, encountering this hellish scenario had deeply rattled her.
Even though this protected zone was paradise compared to the outside for regular people, it didn’t stop her from understanding the dire situation.
“This is a colleague who works part-time in my shop. He’s the whole reason I escaped alive. Don’t let his delicate looks fool you, his fighting power is terrifying. And he’s a boy.”
Perhaps because she saw her caring elder sister and felt a bit more relaxed, Amy introduced Feng Yiyou beside her with a playful tone.
Honestly, after his help wasn’t needed anymore, he could have easily abandoned her. His own survival chances would have been much higher alone with his strength. Yet, he brought her to this Safe Zone. Amy felt truly grateful for that.
Hearing her sister-in-law’s words, the woman gave Feng Yiyou a few more appraising looks. Though he was a young male, she didn’t find anything strange about him due to his looks and age. She promptly expressed her thanks to Feng Yiyou.
In times like these, earning a Martial Artist’s friendship was worth infinitely more than in normal times.
In ordinary days, she wouldn’t have bothered with fighters who were simply good at fighting, even if they sought her favor. Now, the tables were completely turned.
Indeed, as the larger context shifted, everyone’s status changed along with it.
“Since you saved my sister-in-law, young man, you’re practically family. I’ll be your guarantor this time. Hehe, it might not be a huge favor, but it will ensure your freedom to move within the Safe Zone.”
As a businesswoman, she was expert at gauging the appropriate attitude, knowing when to invest and when to offer something beneficial.
But ultimately, she was still a businesswoman, always considering exchanges of benefit. Though she deliberately lowered her demeanor, an underlying patronizing attitude, like someone superior bestowing favor upon someone beneath them, still remained deep down.
No matter the era, even if physical laborers’ wages surpass the average salary, most people still look down on them with prejudice.
Martial Artists running dojos or performing tricks were, to many powerful people, largely just that kind of existence. In normal times, how much use is Kung Fu against a gun? The difference in required effort and the rewards was just too vast!
At best, such skilled fighters might be needed as one or two talented meat shields blocking bullets within bodyguards.
For an ordinary person, her surface-level attitude might still easily generate goodwill.
However, unfortunately, Feng Yiyou, having polished his Momentum continuously for a month and reaching the peak of the Second Stage Momentum, could keenly perceive her most fundamental intentions.
This ‘normal hypocrisy’ in human interaction easily irritated Feng Yiyou, whose own approach to human relationships was already a complete mess.
His immediate reaction was relatively cold. He just replied with a curt “Mmm,” without even saying thank you.
This response caused the woman’s broad, businesslike smile to freeze awkwardly.
“Alright, alright, that’s just his personality, don’t mind him,” Amy quickly stepped in to ease the atmosphere seeing it turn awkward. “Yiyou, my sister really means well.”
“Hmph, that kind of personality is easy to suffer losses in today’s society. He should change it.”
Even with the olive branch offered by her sister-in-law, the woman still felt resentment inside. Following up, she spoke in a lecturing tone.
Inwardly, she probably thought that this youngster, used to being downtrodden, suddenly saw his past efforts paying off and failed to keep the right attitude, leading to this scene.
But did he really think he could walk tall in this current environment?
He was wrong! Dead wrong!
No matter how strong he might be physically, even capable of bare-handed feats rivaling firearms, he would still be nothing but a tool used by the elites – at best, a higher-class tool!
As a tool, did he actually dream of sitting equally with his owners?
While fighting strength was valuable, it wasn’t irreplaceable here in this zone. Having him was good, but they could certainly manage without him!
After delivering this lecturing remark but receiving absolutely zero response, the woman finally retracted her smile. Grabbing Amy’s arm, she said, “Seems your friend scorns my guarantee. Fine then. It would involve considerable responsibility and trouble for me anyway. I’m barely scraping the upper crust in this area – better to keep a low profile.”
After saying this, she didn’t even want to glance at Feng Yiyou anymore. Turning, she strutted off, intending to leave the room with Amy. If they couldn’t reach an agreement, she might as well skip the pleasantries.
The soldier guarding the door made no move to stop her.
The Shopkeeper struggled against her grip while trying to persuade her: “Sis, that’s just how he is! He doesn’t mean any harm! I definitely wouldn’t be alive if not for him! Please help!”
Ultimately, there was a difference in size; Amy couldn’t break free.
“It’s not that I won’t help; it’s that he looks down on it. Hmph… when did personality become an excuse? Let him be. You’re safe now, aren’t you? Besides, you’re a woman with a husband; it’s not quite proper to keep hanging around with young men.”
Hearing her sister-in-law’s plea again seemed to irk the woman. Her tone appeared heavier.
She slowed her steps slightly. Unless he begged her now, she might reconsider.
Just as she slowed down, the door to this modified isolation room opened again. A young blond man rushed in urgently.
Spotting Feng Yiyou standing there seemingly dazed, Hamart let out a sigh of relief, then scolded him playfully: “Seems all that sword practice wasn’t wasted after all, eh? I knew you wouldn’t kick the bucket so easily. Trouble lasts a thousand years!”
“Huh… Are you… Sir Hahn’s…?” The woman tugging at Amy looked Hamart over with a hint of uncertainty before tentatively asking.
After all, she was just a relatively successful businesswoman. Here, she was barely managing to stay among the protected group. Compared to Hahn, the highest power within the zone, she could only gaze upwards…
…
“Who were those two?”
Watching the woman practically drag the Shopkeeper away in a rush, Hamart turned to Feng Yiyou, his expression strange.
Could it be that his friend suddenly gained some insight? That young woman did seem like the kind who could charm young men. He’d always seemed indifferent before; was this perhaps his type?
Although, honestly put, she wasn’t as pretty as Feng Yiyou himself and far less beautiful than Zhihe.
“The Shopkeeper.”
Delivering the Shopkeeper here, Feng Yiyou considered his promise fulfilled. Though unimpressed by the woman, he bore no ill will towards the Shopkeeper, who had always been kind to him.
Knowing where Feng Yiyou worked, Hamart quickly understood the situation. He couldn’t help but sigh inwardly; although his friend usually seemed distant and cold, once someone earned his recognition, he wouldn’t hesitate to help them in a crisis.
Being able to rescue his everyday boss amidst this chaos and disaster proved exactly that…
…
With Hamart joining them, all the remaining issues Feng Yiyou faced were effortlessly resolved.
Contribute points to trade for food?
Apologies, that was specifically for those ordinary folks without connections. Hahn and Kaio were the highest commanders of this temporary Safe Zone, and their relationship was extremely close. Against this backdrop, Hamart, being Hahn’s own nephew, naturally had zero trouble guaranteeing one person.
Simultaneously, Feng Yiyou started getting some inside information from Hamart.
Based on snippets Hamart heard from his uncle Hahn, the harm from these Spores had actually appeared before that Level-2 Biochemical Incident!
It just hadn’t been nearly as severe then, and nobody had even considered this possibility.
Kaio, the head of the scientific research battalion, had likely been invited by Hahn to analyze the threat posed by these Spores. Though Hamart didn’t know the concrete details, it seemed certain research into these fungal spores had been underway for over a month.
In fact, even their comforting statements made during the banquet hadn’t been empty words! Otherwise, it was reasonable to think these two men wouldn’t have stayed here themselves…
