In high school, she had started as a “legacy student” shoved into the Competition Class, only to be transferred later to a Regular Class with a massive performance gap. Since her mother was her homeroom teacher, Xu Yinian never received praise or special treatment for her grades; instead, she was always kept at a distance to avoid the appearance of favoritism.

She had never been confident. She had always kept her brilliance hidden.

But she… she was being praised. And it was happening right in front of her.

Ever since their first meeting, when Shen Ruoshuang had seen that blackboard full of her messy, flawed calculations, Xu Yinian had never felt so much shame. She didn’t want the other girl to see her in an embarrassing light.

She couldn’t explain it, but she just cared about her. Only her.

And in this moment, it felt as if all the effort and obsession of her high school years had been worth it.

Thinking of this, Xu Yinian lifted her head and straightened her back. Under her mask, her face was a deep shade of crimson, but her eyes held a brilliant, dazzling galaxy.

Shen Ruoshuang looked as if she had been singed by the light of a miniature sun, her throat bobbing slightly.

The experiment was to be done in pairs for easier observation and data recording. One person would perform the procedure while the other took notes, then they would switch.

Since Shen Ruoshuang was the one demonstrating, it was only natural for the representative, Xu Yinian, to be called up to work with her.

Whether it was Shen Ruoshuang appearing in the class or Xu Yinian being chosen to partner with her, everything seemed like a series of logical coincidences.

Xu Yinian felt shy about the prospect of working side-by-side with Shen Ruoshuang in front of everyone. She never suspected that this was all part of the other woman’s plan—nothing more than the calculated trap of a big bad wolf.

They walked one after the other to the reagent cabinet.

Xu Yinian was squinting, trying to identify labels that were so worn they were barely legible, when she suddenly felt a crisp, cool fragrance press against her back.

She instinctively turned her head, only to see an arm reaching around her from behind, stretching toward the cabinet in front of her. Using the height difference between them, Shen Ruoshuang effectively caged her into a small, intimate space in full view of the class.

The scent of her overwhelmed Xu Yinian’s senses. She heard the other girl speak in her usual ear-nibbling, flirtatious tone, enunciating every word:

“First row on the left, fifth one with the red cap. In the row behind that, the third and seventh blue caps and the brown bottle. Finally, the white bottle in the right corner.”

The words were perfectly professional, yet they teased Xu Yinian so easily that her entire body went weak. Not a single word of the instructions actually stayed in her mind.

Under the lab coat and the mask, the high-altitude flower remained the picture of ascetic self-restraint. The wild contrast between her cold exterior and the heat of her hidden actions caused Xu Yinian’s heart to race to its limit.

Shen Ruoshuang let out a soft chuckle. Her warm breath passed through the mask, hitting the skin of Xu Yinian’s neck.

As if nothing had happened, she began picking out the reagents she had just named and placing them into the tray one by one. From the start, she had never intended for the flustered Xu Yinian to carry them.

“Classmate Xu, stand steady.”

Before withdrawing, the Sophisticated Scoundrel left behind a kind reminder. She enunciated “Classmate Xu” with distant, prim courtesy.

She didn’t seem to care that “Classmate Xu” looked this way entirely because of her. Far from putting out the fire, she seemed intent on throwing more fuel onto the flames.

There was nothing technically wrong with her words or actions. Xu Yinian could only blame her own lack of composure. She quickly tidied her expression behind her mask and followed the retreating figure back to the table.

Shen Ruoshuang performed the demonstration at the front while the teacher emphasized precautions. Xu Yinian sat quietly to the side, recording the data.

Watching her work was a form of pure enjoyment, which presented a massive challenge to Xu Yinian’s focus. From the side, Shen Ruoshuang’s sharp jawline looked even more striking against the edge of the mask, adding a touch of heroic, mature beauty to her usual coolness.

Her eyes were focused and calm, every movement as perfect as a programmed sequence.

This was… a genius’s Absolute Territory.

After staring for only a moment, Xu Yinian found herself bewitched and lost in a daze. A calm reminder snapped her back to reality.

“I’m about to start the test. It might be a bit loud.”

The voice was void of emotion, sounding like a standard warning for the whole class. But it wasn’t loud at all; Shen Ruoshuang didn’t seem to care if anyone else heard her.

When Xu Yinian heard the sharp bang of the reaction, she realized with a start—was Shen Ruoshuang afraid of startling her?

Her lashes fluttered. A strange, new emotion bubbled up in her heart, like something was gently scratching at her soul.

It took her a long moment to look back at the lab report, only to realize with a jolt of horror that her daydreaming had caused her to miss a key piece of data.

She was instantly mortified. She left the space blank, planning to record the data when she performed the experiment herself later.

The demonstration ended quickly. Xu Yinian looked up and saw that many of the other students looked just as dazed as she had been. Knowing her fangirling wasn’t an isolated incident made her feel slightly better.

Seeing the others start their experiments, Xu Yinian grabbed her incomplete report and hurried back to her own station, terrified of losing face in front of Shen Ruoshuang.

But she felt footsteps following close behind her.

“Aren’t… aren’t you supposed to be walking around to answer questions?” Xu Yinian tried to protest in a small voice as she saw Shen Ruoshuang take the empty seat beside her.

If she stayed here watching her, wouldn’t her hands shake so much she’d crash?

“I thought Classmate Xu might have a question?”

Shen Ruoshuang used the tip of her pen to tap on the lab report, which Xu Yinian had carefully flipped face-down on the table.

Xu Yinian remembered clearly—that exact spot corresponded perfectly to the data she had missed.

She… she saw!

Just as she was feeling utterly humiliated for failing in front of Shen Ruoshuang again, she heard that celestial, ethereal voice speak the most shameless words imaginable:

“Am I really that good-looking? You look at me and forget everything else.”

“Do you like me that much?”
