"God, Cherion... what are you even made of? Why are you so cursedly sweet?"

Zarius hitched Cherion higher against his hip, his large hand locked firmly under Cherion’s thigh, and carried him straight down the secondary corridor. He didn’t stop until the corridor hit a hard dead end.

The second Cherion’s back hit the wall at the end of the hall, Zarius crowded him in, cutting off all light and air until Cherion had nowhere left to shrink.

"Zarius..." Cherion started, but the name dissolved into a high, broken gasp as Zarius buried his face straight into the crook of his neck.

Zarius’s mouth didn’t just skim his skin. He hovered close, his ragged breath burning against Cherion’s neck, before he sank his teeth into the sensitive skin right over his pounding pulse.

The unexpected sting made Cherion bite his tongue so hard he tasted copper. He swallowed down a cry, forcing himself quiet against the empty hall, even as the sudden burst of pain shot a fierce heat straight to his core.

Cherion’s head cracked back against the stone wall with a soft thud. His eyes fluttered shut, his sight going dark as his knees buckled slightly. If Zarius hadn’t been holding him up, he would have slid straight down the cold wall.

"Ah... wait," Cherion whimpered, his hands moving on pure instinct. Cherion gripped the front of Zarius’s coat, knuckles white against the stiff fabric as the world tilted beneath him. His other hand flew up, sinking deep into Zarius’s dark hair, anchoring him right where he was. He didn’t pull away, if anything, his knuckles strained as he pulled Zarius’s head down harder into his neck, torn completely between begging him to stop and begging him never to let go.

Zarius didn’t even acknowledge the protest. His mouth dragged up the side of Cherion’s neck, scraping hot against bruised skin, until he was pressed right beneath Cherion’s ear. At the same time, his long fingers worked frantically at the front of Cherion’s shirt. Silk buttons gave way with small, muffled pops, loosening the collar and exposing the flush of his collarbones.

A second later, Zarius’s bare, scorching palm slid directly onto Cherion’s bare chest.

The shock of it locked Cherion’s chest. The wall at his back was freezing, but Zarius’s palm over his ribs was burning hot, soaking right through his shirt. Zarius dragged his thumb slow across Cherion’s chest, feeling his heart hammer against his hand.

"Zarius... please," Cherion panted, his chest heaving under that heavy, searing palm. He swallowed hard, trying to soothe the sting on his tongue and claw back a single shred of sanity. "Are you... ah... are you completely out of your mind? What if... what if someone else comes down here? What if they talk?"

Zarius let out a low chuckle against Cherion’s jawline, his lips grazing the shell of Cherion’s ear before trailing back down to his throat.

"Those two bolted like they owed money to a high demon," Zarius murmured, his voice a gravelly, low vibration that rattled straight through Cherion’s chest. "Trust me, they’re currently telling every patrol in this wing to stay five hundred feet away from this corridor unless they want to lose their eyes."

"That doesn’t... ah!" Cherion gasped, his fingers tightening in Zarius’s dark hair, tugging just hard enough to make Zarius let out a low growl of approval. "That doesn’t make it better!"

"And even if the whole palace talks..." Zarius murmured, shifting his stance. He pressed his knee firmly between Cherion’s thighs, forcing Cherion’s legs wider to make room for his body, "what’s the difference? They’ve been whispering about us from the start. Let them talk."

Before Cherion could process the words, Zarius’s free hand slid slowly down Cherion’s back, slipping under the hem of his disheveled jacket. Zarius’s fingers flexed, taking a full, heavy handful of Cherion’s ass and squishing the firm muscle tightly in his grip.

Cherion let out a muffled, embarrassed sound against Zarius’s cheek, his hips bucking at the sheer pressure of the grip. Zarius didn’t ease up for a second.

Everything in Cherion’s head went dead silent. There was no mistaking the hard ridge pressed tight against his lower stomach, or what being this close was doing to Zarius.

Zarius reclaimed his mouth before Cherion could recover his breath. He slanted his head, deepening the kiss into something messy, heavy, and completely shameless. His tongue slid past Cherion’s parted lips, catching on the subtle sting where Cherion had bitten himself moments earlier. Zarius kissed him deeper, his mouth burning hot over Cherion’s as he caught every quiet, helpless sound before Cherion could pull it back.

Cherion clung to him like a man drowning. One hand remained knotted tightly in Zarius’s hair, pulling him closer whenever Zarius tried to pause for air, while his other hand remained clamped to Zarius’s shoulder, his fingers digging in through the expensive fabric to keep his own balance. Every press of Zarius’s chest against his bare skin was making the room spin faster and faster.

Zarius pressed into him harder, dragging his mouth down to Cherion’s jaw again, his breath harsh and demanding as he braced one arm against the stone right beside Cherion’s head. His other hand stayed clamped on Cherion’s hip, squeezing tight enough to leave marks through his trousers.

"Oh god... Yerel..." Cherion choked out, his eyes flying open in sudden, horrified realization.

Zarius froze instantly.

All that heat shattered in a single, painfully awkward second. Zarius pulled back slowly, staring down at Cherion like he couldn’t quite process what he was hearing.

His breath was still coming in heavy, ragged hitches, his chest heaving against Cherion’s bare skin, but his expression had gone completely, utterly flat.

"I swear to God," Zarius growled, "it would help my mood immensely if you didn’t say another man’s name while my hand is up your shirt."

Cherion’s face burned so hot he thought he might actually combust on the spot. The sting on his tongue felt twice as sharp now as he frantically shook his head, his hands slapping against Zarius’s broad shoulders to push him back just an inch.

"No! No, that’s not... I didn’t mean it like that!" Cherion squeaked, his voice cracking horribly in the quiet corridor. He raised a trembling, flustered hand and pointed straight up above Zarius’s head. "Look! Look!"

Zarius stared at Cherion’s panic for a second before slowly turning his head to glance up over his shoulder.

Hanging directly above them on the dead-end wall was a massive ornate oil painting. It was a massive, formal portrait of King Alderon and Yerel side-by-side in full regal attire, their painted eyes staring down at the corridor with cold, heavy judgment.

They were literally making out right under the gaze of the two most powerful men in the Auzelian.

Zarius stared at the portrait for three long, agonizing seconds. A single muscle in his jaw twitched.

"Huh," Zarius grunted softly. He turned his eyes back down to Cherion, completely unbothered. "So it is."

"So it is?!" Cherion echoed, his voice rising in utter mortification as he tried to pull his open shirt together with shaking fingers. "Zarius, we’re doing this directly beneath the monarch’s painting! We need to move, right now..."

"They’re painted on canvas, Cherion. They aren’t watching us," Zarius cut in smoothly, a slow, dark smirk curving his lips as he saw how utterly undone Cherion was.

Without giving him a single second to escape, Zarius slid his hand right back down to Cherion’s hip, gripping him with twice the force as before and pinning him back against the wall. He leaned in close, his mouth hovering barely a millimeter away from Cherion’s lips, his scalding breath washing over Cherion’s flushed face.

"Besides..." Zarius murmured, his voice dropping into a rough, husky purr that sent a violent shiver straight down Cherion’s spine. He rocked his hips forward again, squeezing Cherion’s ass through his pants and pinning him so hard against the stone that a soft, breathless sound was forced right out of Cherion’s throat.

"I think you need a little reminder about whose name you’re supposed to be crying out down here."
