I Became the Villain Alpha's Omega (BL)
Chapter 362: The Unexpected PropositionThe mid-afternoon sun cast a warm, golden haze over the royal palace’s expansive south gardens, turning the sprawling estate’s trimmed hedges and blooming flowerbeds into a vibrant tapestry. Soft breezes swept through the marble arches, carrying the sweet, heavy scent of honeysuckle and night-blooming jasmine across the stone walkways.
Iryna strolled leisurely down the manicured path, her skirt brushing softly against the trimmed boxwoods. Every few steps, she paused, leaning down to gently tilt the stem of a delicate white lily or cup a vibrant rose blossom in her palm, taking a quiet moment to breathe in the fragrant pollen.
Walking half a step behind her, Marielle kept her arms crossed tightly over her chest, her sharp gaze scanning the perimeter out of habit before flickering back to Iryna’s relaxed posture. Her shoulders were tense, her boots clicking with a sharp, impatient rhythm against the cobblestones.
"Are you entirely sure you ought to be out here wandering around?" Marielle asked, her voice laced with a crisp, clipped concern. "The royal physician made it very clear that you needed bed rest. Pushing yourself through the gardens the moment your "illness" breaks isn’t exactly brilliant."
Iryna let go of the lily stem, allowing it to spring back into place. She turned slightly, looking over her shoulder with a smooth, amused curve to her lips.
"I am perfectly fine, Marielle," Iryna replied, her tone airy and unbothered. "In fact, my strength has returned so completely that if you wanted to go for fight round two with you right now, I could easily accommodate you."
Marielle’s eyebrow twitched upward, a faint grimace touching her lips as she immediately caught the reference. She remembered all too well their initial encounter back at her home, the complete disaster of a misunderstanding where Marielle had assumed the worst, drawing her steel and sparking a duel that didn’t end until half the estate’s manicured courtyard was reduced to smoldering rubble and uprooted topiary.
"I will pass," Marielle said flatly, rolling her shoulders with a dry, stoic huff. "If we fought right now, I would simply defend myself out of sheer pity for someone who just crawled out of a sickbed. Besides, unlike back at home, I have zero desire to be held financially responsible for wrecking the royal palace’s prize gardens."
Iryna threw her head back and laughed, a bright, musical sound that rang softly across the courtyard.
"Ah, look at you, acting so sensible," Iryna teased, stepping back into the center of the path and spreading her arms wide to take in the clear sky. "The weather is simply marvelous today, isn’t it? It feels wonderful to finally draw a proper breath of fresh air after being cooped up inside that bedroom for so long."
Marielle let out a soft, skeptical hum, falling into step beside her. "You make it sound like you were locked in a dungeon for a month. It was barely two days."
"Two days in a bed feels like an eternity when the sun is shining," Iryna countered lightly, her smile remaining fixed as she leaned down to touch the velvety petal of a blue iris.
Marielle exhaled a heavy, deliberate breath through her nose. She stopped dead in her tracks, folding her arms over her ribs and staring directly at Iryna’s back.
"Can we please just get straight to business?" Marielle demanded, her tone dropping all pleasantries. "We’ve been walking in circles for twenty minutes discussing the flora, the weather, and your sleeping habits. None of this is what you called me out here for."
Iryna paused mid-reach, her hand hovering over a rosebush. She glanced back over her shoulder, her dark eyes twinkling with quiet amusement.
"My, my," Iryna murmured, tilting her head. "It seems Lady Marielle doesn’t care for small talk at all."
Marielle remained utterly silent, her jaw set, her expression an unreadable wall of cold discipline.
Recognizing that her companion wasn’t going to rise to the bait, Iryna let her hand drop back to her side and turned around completely to face her. The playful, teasing warmth in her posture settled into something far more deliberate, though her expression remained impossibly serene.
"Very well," Iryna said smoothly, clasping her hands loosely in front of her dress as she took two slow steps toward Marielle. "I suppose we can dispense with the pleasantries. You are aware of my betrothal arrangement, yes?"
Marielle’s posture shifted slightly, her eyes narrowing as she listened. "Of course I know about it. You need a marital match from one of the major territories to solidify the peace treaty."
"Precisely," Iryna confirmed, nodding slowly as she began to walk again, her pace measured. "When the terms were first drawn up, I admit I was thoroughly uninspired. I genuinely felt there was no suitable candidate for me, no one who possessed the right combination of standing, nerve, and fortitude to make such an arrangement tolerable."
Marielle walked beside her, her expression stoic. "A tragic plight for royalty, I’m sure."
"I thought so too," Iryna continued. "However... as time has passed and circumstances have unfolded, I seem to have unexpectedly found the right candidate after all."
Marielle glanced sideways at her, her brows pulling together in mild irritation. "Alright. Congratulations, I suppose. But what exactly does your romantic trajectory have to do with me? Why bring me all the way out to the gardens just to give me a status update on your marriage prospects?"
Iryna stopped walking by a stone fountain, the soft splash of falling water filling the quiet between them. She turned to face Marielle head-on, her gaze locking onto hers.
"Because," Iryna said softly, "the candidate in question happens to be someone from Valtrane."
There wasn’t even a second of delay.
Marielle’s entire posture snapped rigid, her eyes flaring with immediate, fierce hostility. Her hand dropped reflexively to the hilt of her sword as a dark, dangerous scowl twisted her features.
"Hey," Marielle growled, stepping up until she was practically toe-to-toe with Iryna, her voice dropping into a low, threatening hiss. "I don’t care what kind of treaty you’re trying to sign, but my brother and Cherion are in a committed relationship! Don’t you dare even think about trying to insert yourself between..."
"Marielle," Iryna interrupted smoothly, holding up a single, slender hand to freeze Marielle’s tirade mid-sentence.
Iryna didn’t flinch from the sudden hostility. Instead, the corners of her lips curled upward into a slow, breathtakingly confident smirk. Her dark eyes gleamed with an unmistakable, dangerous delight as she stepped closer, bridging the tiny remaining gap between them until Marielle could feel the heat radiating off her skin.
"Calm yourself," Iryna purred, her voice dropping into an intoxicating, velvety whisper that cut straight through the rush of the fountain behind them. "I have no interest in your brother, nor do I have any desire to disturb Cherion."
Marielle blinked, her hand freezing on the pommel of her blade, her mind momentarily short-circuiting under the sheer intensity of Iryna’s gaze. "Then... who...?"
Iryna reached out, her fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from Marielle’s stunned face, her touch lingering just a fraction too long against Marielle’s burning cheek.
"It’s another Valtrane," Iryna whispered, her smile stretched wider, cold and sharp enough to make it clear she wasn’t backing down. "It’s you, Marielle."
