I know? What does he mean, ’I know’?!
His brain short-circuited entirely. He had spent hours practicing this speech in his head, mentally preparing for disbelief, anger, or a long, agonizing lecture on sanity. He certainly hadn’t expected Zarius to be standing there without so much as a flicker of surprise, as if Cherion had just confessed to stealing a priceless family heirloom and replacing it with a potato..
Without a word, Cherion slowly backed away from the tea table, crossed the quiet room, and collapsed onto the bed. He sat down heavily on the mattress, resting his elbows on his knees as he rubbed his temples.
Zarius turned slowly and walked over to the bed. He sat down beside Cherion, the mattress sinking slightly beneath him. Even sitting there, he somehow managed to look dark and tall, though his expression remained completely calm.
"I expected many things," Cherion muttered, looking up through his messy hair. "I expected a ’you’re crazy,’ or ’did you hit your head in that creepy secret tunnel,’ or ’what kind of drugs are you on?’ But definitely not that."
Zarius raised an eyebrow, a subtle glimmer of amusement dancing in his eyes. "Why is it even a surprise?"
He reached out, closing his large, warm fingers around Cherion’s dusty hand, his thumb casually brushing over his knuckles.
"You are indeed not from here," Zarius said smoothly. "You came from the South. And you are certainly not how you were supposed to be. When the reports first came to the North, Cherion Antel was described as an arrogant, spoiled, and fragile noble who couldn’t endure a single week of hard work. Yet the moment you arrived, you proved to be remarkably capable, sharp, and possessed a far better reputation than the rumors claimed. People change, Cherion. I simply assumed you grew up."
Cherion stared at him for three long seconds, then gave a quiet "Ohhh," as understanding finally clicked.
That’s what Zarius thought he meant.
Cherion pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a breathy, half-amused laugh. "Right. Okay. That... makes total sense. Well, you’re right that Cherion Antel is from the South. I mean... no, wait. Cherion Antel is from the South. I am not from the South."
Cherion cleared his throat, sitting up straighter on the mattress. "I’m sorry for not being clear. Now that I think about it, the way I said it definitely sounds like I’m talking about character development or personal growth. But I’m not."
He locked eyes with Zarius, his voice settling into a more serious tone. "When I say I’m not the Cherion you’re supposed to know, it isn’t because I changed for the better. And when I say I’m not from here, I don’t mean I’m not from the capital. What I mean is... I am not Cherion Antel at all. I am not from this world."
Zarius stayed utterly still. He stared at Cherion without blinking, his thumb pausing against his knuckles.
The silence stretched on, and Cherion decided to keep talking before Zarius’s thoughts wandered somewhere neither of them could legally return from.
He quickly began explaining everything. He told Zarius about his previous life, how he had been a completely ordinary person living in a vast, modern world filled with concrete buildings, roaring metal carriages, and flying machines. He confessed that on the very day he died, he had actually won a massive, life-changing lottery.
And no, he made sure to clarify, he didn’t die because he ate too many instant noodles every night, but because a literal higher power had made an absurd, clerical error and taken his soul by mistake. As compensation for ending his life early, that god, yes, the actual God, had dumped his soul into this world, shoving him straight into Cherion Antel’s body at the exact moment the crown prince decided he was no longer worth keeping. Fantastic timing.
He tried to run away, failed, got betrothed to Zarius, a few unexpectedly sweet moments, plenty of other nonsense later, da da da, and here they were now.
The moment Cherion finished speaking, the bedroom went completely silent.
Zarius simply sat there, saying nothing. Whatever was going on behind his eyes, Cherion couldn’t make sense of it.
Oh My God, Cherion thought, his chest tightening as a sudden wave of cold sweat broke out on his neck. Did I break him? Is his brain melted? I haven’t even gotten to the part about his mother and the King possibly having some weird, secret business yet!
"I know it sounds completely insane," Cherion stammered, his words tumbling out in a rush as he nervously gestured with his free hand. "You can think I’m crazy. Honestly, it’s completely natural if you don’t believe a word I just said. I’ve been dying to tell you this ever since the party, but then Iryna got poisoned, and the investigation started, and everything was just so chaotic... I’m really sorry I didn’t tell you from the very beginning."
Before Cherion could finish rambling, Zarius shifted.
Instead of pulling away and yelling that Cherion must have gone crazy after disappearing at the temple, Zarius leaned closer until his forehead rested gently against Cherion’s. One hand remained wrapped around Cherion’s, while his other hand came up to cradle the side of his face, his fingers slipping gently into Cherion’s hair.
"You must have been so scared," Zarius whispered softly. "And so confused."
Cherion gasped slightly, his lips parting in sheer disbelief. He blinked, staring at Zarius’s face from this absurdly close distance, completely thrown off. "You... you don’t think I’m crazy?"
"Cherion," Zarius murmured, brushing his thumb softly across Cherion’s cheekbone. "We passed the point of normal long ago. I know the difference between when you are making a jest and when you are speaking from your heart. I can see it in your eyes." He paused, letting out a low, quiet breath against Cherion’s skin. "Though... I need to admit, I will need a bit of time to process all of this."
A massive, overwhelming weight seemed to instantly lift off Cherion’s chest. He relaxed his shoulders, leaning his forehead heavier against Zarius’s, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of relief.
"Thank you," Cherion murmured quietly. "Thank you for trusting me."
"I should be the one thanking you," Zarius replied gently, his grip tightening comfortably on Cherion’s waist. "You carried this alone for so long. To share something like this... it is no small matter. Thank you for trusting me with it."
Cherion let out a soft, breathy chuckle, tilting his head slightly. "Honestly... why did I wait so damn long to tell you?"
Zarius smiled softly, leaning in just an inch closer to press a tender, lingering kiss right against the edge of Cherion’s lips.
"Because you were careful," Zarius murmured against his mouth. "But you are safe now."
Cherion smiled back, feeling a warm, soothing comfort wash through him. But as he rested his forehead against Zarius’s shoulder, he swallowed hard, realizing there was still one massive, mind-bending piece of the puzzle left to drop.
He leaned back slightly, looking straight into Zarius’s eyes.
"Zarius," Cherion whispered, his voice trembling just a fraction. "There’s... one more thing. About this world."
"What is it?" Zarius asked softly.
Cherion bit his lip, taking a deep, shuddering breath. "This world... your kingdom, the North, the capital, everyone in it... back in my old world, all of this was written down. It was a novel. A story."
