For the next hour, Cherion did what any reasonable person would do in his situation: lie beside Zarius and explain the entire ridiculous plot of the novel.
Cherion was very selective about what he shared. Not everything in the novel needed to make the journey from his brain to Zarius’s ears, especially since some of it had been written by an author who clearly believed subtlety was a personal attack.
The political mess, the endless schemes, shifting alliances, whatever else the author had thrown into the political blender could stay there.
Then they reached Yerel and Philia.
The moment he recognized where things were going, his explanation became suspiciously vague.
"They had a romantic development," he said.
That was it.
Absolutely no attempt to recreate the author’s increasingly creative descriptions of kissing, touching, trembling, sighing, breathlessness, moonlight, tangled sheets, or whatever other literary nonsense had been involved. Cherion had read those scenes at an ungodly hour in the privacy of his former life. He had survived them once. He saw no reason to suffer through them again by explaining them aloud to Zarius.
Instead, he focused on the structural differences between the book and their current reality.
"The timeline is already completely off," Cherion said. "Marielle had never existed in the novel. Neither was Gillian, and Iryna’s name didn’t appear once in the main narrative. The southern border dispute was supposed to be solved entirely by Yerel taking full military command to solidify his claim to the throne."
Zarius listened intently, his eyes following Cherion’s every movement, absorbing every word with a steady, quiet focus.
Cherion paused, rubbing the back of his head as he dug through his increasingly unreliable memory and dream. "And then there are the memories and dreams. I don’t get them often, but occasionally I get tiny, fragmented flashes of what the OG Cherion experienced. None of them are pleasant. But... there’s one thing that always bothered me."
He frowned slightly, looking down at the pattern in the rug. "In the book, Philia was written as this saintly, remarkably gentle figure who could do no wrong. But... right after I first woke up in this body, he turned on me. He was so hostile. He literally pushed me off a balcony..."
"He did what to you?" Zarius cut in.
His voice didn’t rise in volume, but its pitch dropped into a terrifying, gravelly register that made the air in the bedroom instantly grow thin and cold.
Cherion froze, shrinking back half an inch. He swallowed hard, repeating himself in a much smaller, far more cautious tone. "...He pushed me off a balcony."
Zarius didn’t speak for two agonizing seconds.
Then, with a sudden, violent shift in movement, the northern Duke stood up. His heavy Alpha aura flared outward like a dark, suffocating wave, his broad shoulders squared as he turned straight toward the chamber doors, his jaw locked in a terrifying expression of pure, murderous intent.
"Hey... whoa, whoa! Zarius, stop!" Cherion scrambled upright, immediately grabbing Zarius’s thick forearm with both hands. "Stop! I’m fine! Look at me, I am completely fine!"
Zarius stopped, but his muscles were strung as tight as bowstrings under Cherion’s grip, his chest heaving with silent, dark rage. "He laid hands on you. He tried to end your life."
"It happened a while ago! Right when I first woke up in this world!" Cherion insisted, planting both palms against Zarius’s broad chest as if physically holding him back would somehow make his argument more convincing. "I was disoriented, I had no idea where I was, and I didn’t have my guard up yet. I promise you, no one can try a stunt like that on me now. I know what he’s really like."
Zarius glared down at him, his eyes smoldering with a cold fire that took several long seconds to abate. "It does not matter when it occurred. He still..."
"God protected me, okay?" Cherion pleaded, offering a breathless, reassuring smile as he patted Zarius’s chest. "Literally. The divine higher power that shoved me into this body made sure I didn’t break my neck on impact."
Zarius let out a low, dangerous growl deep in his chest, though he slowly relaxed his posture under Cherion’s steady touch. "Still..."
"Still nothing," Cherion smoothed down the front of Zarius’s tunic. "You can’t just march out there and cut off the crown prince’s fiancée’s head. I don’t like that. I don’t like heads. They’re much better attached to the person they’re supposed to belong to."
Zarius’s jaw twitched. "I could ask Flio to identify the highest point in the capital. I will personally drag Philia to the top and cast him off it."
Cherion couldn’t help it, a sudden, breathy laugh bubbled up out of his throat. He looked up at Zarius with an amused grin. "And how, exactly, do you plan on getting him up there? Are you going to kidnap him in broad daylight? Or are you going to lure him up the stairs with a piece of fish jerky?"
Zarius stared down at him, not even remotely amused by the joke.
"Besides," Cherion added, tilting his head slightly, "remember when he visited the North? He tripped and tumbled straight into the fountain. I didn’t push him, but he technically still took a dive because of me. So let’s just call it even."
Zarius stared at Cherion’s smiling face for a long moment before the icy tension in his broad shoulders finally dissolved. He let out a low, quiet breath, reached up with one hand to cup the back of Cherion’s neck, and pulled him in, pressing a firm, lingering kiss against his lips.
"If that is what you wish," Zarius murmured against his mouth before pulling back.
As the kiss broke, Zarius let out a faint, deep chuckle, a rare, genuine sound that softened his dark features completely.
Cherion blinked, raising an eyebrow. "What’s so funny?"
"I am still trying to process the fact that your soul originates from another world," Zarius admitted, his thumb gently stroking the sensitive skin behind Cherion’s ear. "But I can’t help feeling profoundly relieved."
"Relieved?" Cherion repeated. "About what?"
Zarius’s expression softened, a rare shadow of vulnerability crossing his eyes. "Before today... there was a small, quiet part of me that was terrified. I knew the rumors of how deeply Cherion Antel used to care for Yerel. I feared that one day, no matter what I did, you might look at him again and choose to return to his side."
Cherion just stared at him, his brain apparently taking a moment to process what he’d heard. This giant, terrifying northern Duke... was actually insecure about the Crown Prince?!
Before Zarius could say another word, Cherion reached up, caught Zarius by his lapels, and forcefully shoved him backward.
Zarius, caught off guard by the sudden burst of strength, lost his balance and fell back onto the mattress. Before he could even settle against the pillows, Cherion swung his leg over, straddling Zarius’s lap and sitting firmly on top of him, staring down with absolute, fierce determination.
