Chapter 108: Chapter 108
Elena’s pov
The taxi engine idle sounded like a dying beast in the dark.
I leaned against the vinyl headrest, staring out the fogged glass of the rear window.
The driver hadn’t taken me up a winding mountain road to a gated community.
Instead, he had pulled into the mouth of a gravelly, abandoned alleyway on the edge of the mountain.
"This is the address, lady," the driver muttered, resting his wrists over the steering wheel without putting the car in park. "End of the line. I ain’t driving down there. It’s just a dead-end lot with half-built concrete frames."
My heart sank into my stomach. "Are you sure?"
"Look out the window."
I stepped out of the cab, the cool night air biting through my thin silk blouse as my heels sank into loose gravel. The taxi sped away behind me, its red taillights disappearing into the gloom, leaving me in near-total darkness.
There was no grand estate here. No high iron gates or polished marble fountains.
Stretching out before me was a graveyard of abandoned development, a sprawling expanse of uncompleted concrete structures, rusted rebar jutting toward the dark sky like broken ribs, and overgrown weeds pushing through cracked asphalt. Deep shadows pooled inside the hollow doorframes of unfinished towers.
Did those men lie to me? I thought, my chest tightening with a suffocating wave of panic. Was this a trick?
I pulled my coat tight around my shoulders, my fingers cold and numb, and walked toward the edge of the broken sidewalk. I couldn’t just leave. I had nowhere else to go, no other lead to follow. If there was even a fraction of a chance that Lysander was somewhere nearby, I had to wait.
I found a overturned concrete block near a rusted lamppost that flickered with a faint, dying orange glow. I sat down, tucking my legs together, and stared down the empty gravel stretch.
Minutes bled into hours.
The night grew colder, the wind howling softly through the hollow concrete shells around me.
A few people passed by at long intervals, shadowy figures in heavy hooded jackets, low-level neon-lit clubgoers stumbling home from the lower strip, and silent, fast-moving figures that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
Every time a silhouette appeared in the distance, my breath caught in my throat. I leaned forward, searching the dark for a flash of soft golden hair or a gentle, hesitant stride.
None of them were him.
By three in the morning, my legs were numb, my lips chapped, and my eyes burning with unshed tears. I rested my forehead in my hands, clutching my handbag against my lap, listening to the quiet crunch of gravel in the distance.
Crunch. Crunch. Crunch.
A pair of bright, crystal-white headlights swept across the cracked street, cutting through the fog. A massive, sleek black sedan glided silently to a stop right near the edge of the paved plaza.
The driver’s door opened, and a broad, sharp-suited guard stepped out, holding the rear door open.
My heart hit my ribs like a sledgehammer.
A tall, broad-shouldered man in a tailored dark overcoat stepped out of the car first, his imposing stance and piercing dark eyes unmistakable even in the dim lamplight.
Drake Balthazar.
He reached a hand back into the vehicle, offering his palm with gentle, protective care.
A slim figure stepped out onto the gravel beside him, wearing an oversized cashmere sweater that pooled over his hands, his soft golden hair catching the gleam of the headlights as he looked around the plaza. He walked with a quiet, renewed grace, his posture no longer shrinking, his face flushed with health and life.
My breath hitched violently in my lungs. My vision blurred with sudden, hot tears.
"Lysander!" I screamed, the sound tearing out of my raw throat before I could even process moving.
I scrambled up from the concrete block, my heels slipping on the gravel as I threw myself forward, running as fast as my trembling legs could carry me across the dark lot.
"Lysander! Baby!"
Lysander’s POV
The baseline of the music hummed through the custom floorboards of Drake’s car before the car had even come to a complete stop.
I looked out the tinted window at the sleek, hidden entrance of the Vault’s secondary lounge. When Drake had suggested an hour ago that we leave the house and go back out to the city, my stomach had instantly clenched into a tight knot.
The memories of the last club made me hesitate.
"You’re safe with me, little bird," Drake had murmured back in the suite, pulling me onto his lap and pressing a slow, lingering kiss against my neck. "We aren’t going for business, and no one will dare look at you. We are going purely for pleasure."
Sitting beside him in the warmth of the car, I felt the truth of his words vibrating through our bond. I was different now. I wanted to try again. I wanted to walk by his side without hiding in the shadows and the fact he said no more going for business and leaving me alone, I felt better knowing that.
The line guard opened the door, and Drake stepped out first, extending his broad hand toward me.
I took his palm, letting him pull me up onto the cool pavement. The scent of rain and dark sandalwood enveloped me as Drake pulled me close to his side, his large hand settling firmly over the curve of my waist.
"Lysander!"
The sharp, frantic shriek echoed across the empty gravel plaza, pieced through my thought.
I flinched, my eyes widening as Drake’s grip on my waist instantly tightened into solid iron, his head snapping toward the dark treeline as his fangs extended with a low, protective growl that vibrated against my side.
The last thing I needed was some fake fan or my colleagues from school to think it was okay to approach me like this, I heard from Drake that my video was circulating around school again.
"Lysander! Baby, please!"
A woman came stumbling out of the shadows, her high heels clicking wildly against the cracked asphalt as she ran toward the headlights. Her hair was windblown, her designer coat smeared with dust, and her makeup streaked with dry, heavy tears.
My chest heaved. The breath completely left my lungs when I realized who it was.
"Mom?" I whispered.
