Chapter 49: Chapter 49
Lysander’s POV
When we got out, Gideon turned to me immediately and opened his mouth to yell at me but his eyes strayed to the door. I turned to follow his gaze and saw Darius glaring at his son.
"It looks like I cannot trust you to get him home, get in the fucking car. I will take you guys home." he barked at Gideon.
Gideon snarled, gearing up to fight with his father but he knew it was a fight he wouldn’t win.
"I said, get in the damn car!"
The heavy leather door of the luxury town car slammed shut, sealing the three of us inside a dark, suffocating glass bubble.
The driver pulled away from the gala venue in absolute silence, the city streetlights casting long, predatory shadows across the interior.
I sat pressed as far into the corner of the plush leather seat as humanly possible, still wearing the ruined red satin dress.
Gideon sat directly across from me, his jaw clamped so tight the muscle in his cheek twitched with explosive, unvented rage. Beside him sat Darius, looking completely calm, immaculate, and utterly terrifying.
The silence stretching between us was so thick it felt like glass on the verge of shattering under violent pressure.
"I am utterly embarrassed to call you my son," he finally spoke, breaking the silence with a voice like grinding stone.
Gideon’s head snapped up, his dark eyes flashing with immediate defensiveness. "Father, if you would just let me explain—"
"Explain what?" Darius cut him off cleanly, his tone so devoid of warmth it made the air in the car turn ice-cold. "Explain how a man grown, expected to inherit the company, behaves like a pathetic, petulant teenager?"
Gideon’s knuckles turned bone-white against his knees as he glared at his father in tense, bitter silence.
"You brought your stepbrother out to a high-society political function painted like a carnival attraction," Darius continued ruthruthlessly.
"You thought you were displaying power, Gideon, but all you demonstrated to every man in that room is your utter lack of self-control."
"He needed to be humbled," Gideon spat out through gritted teeth, his eyes flicking toward me with pure venom.
"You are the one who looks humbled," Darius countered smoothly, turning his head to stare coldly at his son. "Making a mockery of yourself in front of Professor Drake, you spoiled my evening, and you brought shame onto the Thorne family."
"Why are you cowering for that man?" Gideon argued, his voice rising in desperation.
"Professor Drake is a man of immense lineage and political influence," Darius growled softly, leaning into Gideon’s space. "He could crush your entire future with a single phone call, yet you strut around his presence like an arrogant fool."
I kept my head down, barely daring to breathe as I watched the powerful patriarch completely dismantle his own heir.
Every word Darius uttered hit Gideon, stripping away his smug aura until he looked small and helpless.
Darius let out a heavy sigh of absolute disdain, shifting his attention away from his son and turning toward me.
His sharp, calculating eyes softened slightly, though the underlying darkness in his gaze remained deeply unsettling.
"Lysander," Darius addressed me softly, his voice dropping into a gentle, commanding frequency that made my skin prickle.
"The next time my son attempts a stunt like this, you will come directly to my study and inform me immediately."
"Do not allow him to intimidate you into silence," he added, staring directly into my eyes. "Do you understand me?"
I swallowed hard, my heart hammering against my ribs as I felt Gideon’s burning, murderous gaze drilling into the side of my face.
I knew that agreeing with Darius would mark me as a traitor in Gideon’s eyes, escalating his hatred to lethal levels.
Yet, sitting in the back of that car, trapped between two dangerous predators, I had no choice but to survive the moment.
"I understand, sir," I whispered softly, giving Darius a firm, distinct nod of my head. "I’ll tell you."
Gideon let out a sharp, audible gasp of pure betrayal, his chest heaving as his eyes nearly burst with fury at the thought of his father taking my side.
He stared at me as if I had just plunged a knife into his back, his fingers twitching as if he wanted to strangle me. I knew if he had an opportunity, he would strangle me but it was a good thing his father was here.
Darius smiled and patted my knee casually before looking back out the tinted window.
"Good boy," Darius murmured quietly, leaving Gideon to stew in his silent, poisonous humiliation for the rest of the ride.
When the town car finally pulled in front of the house. The vehicle came to a smooth halt in front of the grand stone entrance, and the driver immediately opened the doors.
We stepped out into the cool night air, the towering mansion looming over us like a luxurious, marble-lined prison.
Gideon didn’t wait; he rounded the car instantly and grabbed my wrist in a crushing, desperate grip. "You’re coming with me."
"Unfold your hand from him this instant, Gideon," Darius’s command echoed across the driveway like a thunderclap.
Gideon froze, his fingers trembling against my skin before he slowly released my arm, glaring at his father in disbelief.
"Go to your room," Darius ordered coldly, pointing a gloved finger toward the front doors. "You are restricted to the estate until further notice."
"Father, this is ridiculous!" Gideon snapped, his composure completely shattering. "You’re taking his side over mine?"
"I am protecting this family from your incompetence," Darius replied smoothly. "Go to your room before I lose my patience. You are always brewing trouble everywhere you go, when are you going to make me proud?"
Gideon’s jaw worked silently, his face contorted in a mask of absolute hatred as he turned his dark eyes back onto me.
"This isn’t over, Vane," Gideon hissed low under his breath so only I could hear, before storming into the mansion alone.
