Chapter 65: Chapter 65
Drake’s pov
Lysander was still asleep, curled deep inside my bed, his breathing slow. He has been marked and claimed.
Every vampire would know at a glance that he was mine and stay away from him.
I stood up from my desk, leaving the stack of real estate deeds behind, and stepped into the sprawling living room.
I paced the length of the polished dark slate floor, my footsteps silent against the stone.
My mind drifted to the Council of Elders, the ancient court that governed our kind from the shadows across Europe and the Americas.
For three centuries, the primary directive of our lineage had been absolute anonymity. We allowed human empires to build their legal systems, their technological grids, and their sprawling digital surveillance states under the assumption that they were the top of the food chain.
The penalty for threatening that secrecy was immediate execution, enforced by the Enforcers without trial. Yet here was a mortal, blinded by his own inflated sense of self-worth, foolishly believing he could use human digital trinkets as leverage against a creature who had seen the rise and fall of entire dynasties.
My private phone chimed in my pocket.
I pulled it out, looking down at the display. It didn’t show a name, only a heavily encrypted string of digits routed through three separate proxy servers in Zurich. A pathetic attempt at anonymity.
I tapped the screen to answer, holding the phone to my ear as I continued my slow pacing across the room. "Balthazar."
"Where the hell is my son, Drake?"
"I was wondering when you would call, Thorne."
He’s with you, isn’t he?" Darius Thorne’s voice came through the speaker, "I tracked his whereabouts to your house.Hand him over, Drake. Return Lysander to me today, or I burn your entire world to the ground."
I stopped near the edge of the room, a quiet sigh escaping my lips as I listened to his voice. "You are being remarkably tedious, Darius. Your stepson is currently resting in my quarters. He is under my protection, and he has no desire to return to your little glass house."
"You think this is a game?" His tone hardened, "I have evidence of what you are, Balthazar. I have the camera feeds showing your true nature, your speed, your eyes, the anomaly of your biology. I have enough evidence to expose the fact that vampires have been living among humans for centuries. How do you think your precious university or the government will react when they realize what you truly are?"
I turned on my heel and resumed pacing, a slow, low laugh bubbling up from my chest until it echoed off the high ceilings of the penthouse.
"You’re laughing?" Darius asked, a beat of genuine hesitation cutting through his composure.
"I am laughing because you sound like a child holding a match next to a powder keg, convinced you control the fire," I said softly. "You have no leverage, Darius. You never did."
"I have the truth!" He snapped, "I have the footage. I have the files and I am entirely prepared to ruin you to get what is mine. Name the place. We meet in person to arrange Lysander’s return, or the entire world finds out what you are by noon."
I stopped pacing, resting my hands in my pockets, marveling at the sheer, unadulterated arrogance of mortal men. They spent fifty years accumulating money and paper titles, convincing themselves they were gods, entirely blind to the predators watching them from the shadows.
"Very well," I murmured. "The abandoned rail yard near the docks. One hour. Come alone, Darius."
"I’ll be there," he said, and disconnected the call.
Less than an hour later, I stood in the center of the cavernous space, dressed in my dark wool coat, my hands resting casually in my pockets. I didn’t need to hide. I didn’t need security. The silence of the warehouse belonged to me.
The heavy iron door at the far end groaned open, cutting a swath of pale daylight across the gravel. Darius stepped inside.
He held a sleek, leather-bound briefcase in his left hand, his expression rigid and severe as he marched toward me, his footsteps echoing against the rusting steel beams.
"You made a critical error taking him, Balthazar," Darius began as he stopped ten feet away, setting the briefcase on a rusted oil drum. "Lysander is my son. His mother gave me full legal authority over his life, his assets, and his care. You are an academic playing at being a savior, hiding behind ancient tricks. But legalities and exposure will tear you apart."
I didn’t answer immediately. I simply looked at him, taking in the sharp line of his jaw, the arrogant lift of his chin, and the rapid, nervous thrum of his heart beating against his ribs.
I started to laugh.
His brows pulled together, a flash of irritation crossing his face. "What is so amusing?"
"Like father, like son," I purred, taking a slow, effortless step forward. "It truly is tragic. I must admit, Darius, I am genuinely disappointed in you. I thought you possessed at least a fraction of intelligence. I thought you were different from that pathetic, weeping boy you raised. But it is sad to see that you are almost the exact same stupid, naive, foolish human."
Darius’s jaw tightened, his posture stiffening. "Watch your tongue, Drake. I hold the drive. I hold the cameras—"
"I know about your fetish," I interrupted smoothly, my voice dropping into a low hum that made the air in the warehouse instantly drop several degrees. "I know about every hidden lens you drilled into the drywall of Lysander’s bedroom. I know about the feeds routed directly to your private server in the study. I know about your sick, pathetic obsession with your stepson, how you watched him sleep, how you monitored his streams, how you engineered his trauma just to keep him trapped under your thumb."
Darius froze. The color slowly drained from his face, his grey eyes widening as he stared at me.
"You thought you were clever, didn’t you?" I continued, taking another step closer, my shadow stretching out to swallow him whole. "Watching Gideon corner him, watching him beg, doing nothing because it gave you leverage over both of them. But do you want to know what I find most fascinating about you, Darius?"
He swallowed hard, his hands clenching into tight fists at his sides as his heart began to hammer frantically against his chest. "You don’t know anything—"
"I know you are a closeted, miserable coward," I whispered, leaning in close enough that he could feel the arctic chill radiating from my skin. "I know you never cared about Elena. I know you targeted a grieving, vulnerable woman and married her for one reason, and one reason only: to gain access to her teenage son."
He took an involuntary step back, his polished shoes crunching against the gravel, his chest heaving as he stared at me in shock.
The mask had completely shattered, leaving behind a terrified, exposed man whose darkest, most vile secrets had just been laid bare in the dirt.
"Imagine how your dear, sweet wife would react if those files were leaked," I purred, a sharp, predatory smile touching my lips as my eyes flared into a deep, luminous crimson. "Imagine how the board of your company, your investors, and your precious social circle would feel when they discover that the great Darius Thorne married a widow simply because he wanted to fuck her son."
Darius’s breath hitched, a high, strangled gasp escaping his throat as he backed away, his hands trembling violently.
"You are nothing," I said, my voice vibrating in the back of his skull like thunder. "Your threats are dust. Your leverage is a lie. Lysander belongs to me now, and if you ever come near him again, I won’t just destroy your reputation. I will tear your life apart piece by piece."
