Chapter 70: Chapter 70
Drake’s pov
Lysander let out a small, relieved breath and leaned into my touch. But the quiet comfort was fleeting.
I reached for the ledger and the encrypted pages I had pulled from my study vault, laying the documents on the bed beside him.
"Take a look at this for me, little bird." I urged him to look at it.
He turned his head, his smile flickered and died. He looked down at the old pages, his eyebrows pulling together as his eyes scanned the chemical diagrams, the laboratory birth records from twenty years ago, and the signature at the bottom of the maternal consent form:
Elena Vane-Thorne.
His breath hitched. The color drained from his face so fast it looked as though he had been completely drained of blood.
"What... what is this?" He whispered, his fingers trembling violently as he touched the brittle paper, reading the bold header stamped across the top: Project Zero // Subject 0-C.
"This has my mother’s name on it. Why does it say... Subject 0-C?"
"Lysander—" I started to say but he shook his head violently, tears pooling in his eyes as he gave me the full doe eyes.
"No, don’t lie to me. I just need the truth for once in my life, please tell me what this is."
I sighed, I didn’t want to destroy the innocent memory he has of his mother. To him, she was the only one who still cared about him even when she wasn’t paying him any attention.
"Drake," he whispered as he touched my face, redirecting my attention to him.
"Before I tell you anything, what do you know about your mother’s marriage to Darius?"
"Uh- when my mom and dad got divorced, she was devastated and heartbroken but she met Darius later who courted her before they got married."
"That’s all?"
"Yes, he saved my mother from herself." He sounded really proud of the marriage.
He frowned when his gaze met mine, "What? Is there more to it?"
"Your mother didn’t meet Darius by chance, Lysander," I hated telling him this but he needed to know,
"Before she met him, even while married to your father. She worked with an underground group of geneticists known as the Guild. You were not conceived naturally. Your DNA was altered before you were born to make your body entirely receptive to vampire biology."
He stared at the documents, his chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow gasps. Tears welled in the corners of his dark eyes, spilling over his pale cheeks in silent streams.
"That’s not possible,"
"Lysander," I tried to hold his hand.
"No," he sobbed out, shaking his head frantically as he pushed the papers away, letting them scatter across the duvet. "No, that’s... that’s impossible. My mom loved me. She... she wouldn’t do that to me. I’m human, Drake. I’m just a normal person!"
"Look at you, Lysander," I commanded gently, catching his wrist and lifting his forearm to his view.
His eyes widened when he stared at his arm, I had taken a blood sample to test it.
He looked down at the crook of his elbow. The faint blue bruise and puncture marks from where I had taken his blood earlier were completely gone. Not even a mark remained on his pale skin.
"A human body takes days to heal a vein puncture," I whispered, my voice thick with absolute truth. "Your body healed it in hours. The way you absorbed my venom without fever. The way my blood gave you an instant, euphoric high yesterday. You are not fully human, little bird. You were bred to be a vampire’s perfect mate. Capable of bearing pureblood children."
A choked, ragged scream tore from Lysander’s throat, the sound was broken as he let it out.
He buried his face in his hands, his body collapsing forward into his lap as he sobbed hysterically.
His entire frame shook with violent tremors as the reality of his existence shattered over him. I knew he was shocked but the pain was raw. The pain of knowing everybody he has ever known treated him like a product. A manufactured incubator built for monsters.
"I’m a freak," he wept, his voice broken and wet as he clawed at his chest, as if trying to tear the engineered DNA straight out of his flesh. "I’m not real... I’m just a tool... Darius wanted me because I’m an incubator... oh God, my whole life..."
I didn’t let him spiral into the dark. I leaned forward, wrapping my long arms around his shaking shoulders, pulling his fragile, weeping body firmly against my chest.
He didn’t pull away. He collapsed against me, clutching the fabric with bloodless fingers, burying his face in the crook of my neck as he cried out all the agony and betrayal in his soul. His hot tears soaked through my shirt, his ragged breath hot against my cold skin.
"Shh," I murmured into his damp hair, my hands rubbing firm, slow circles over his trembling back. "Listen to me, Lysander. Look at me."
He pulled back slightly, his face red, his eyes swollen and spilling over with endless tears, looking up at me through a blur of absolute despair. "Drake... please... don’t let them take me... don’t let them use me as an experiment..."
I cradled his face in both of my hands, my thumbs wiping away the hot streams on his cheeks. I looked deep into his dark, shattered eyes, letting my own gaze soften.
"No one will ever use you as an experiment," I promised softly, my voice a deep, resonant vow that vibrated directly against his chest. " I will slaughter anyone who dares to look at you as anything less than sacred. You are in my home, bound to me, and under my shadow. Anyone who tries to turn you into a breeding tool will end up in pieces."
Lysander let out a shuddering, broken sigh, nodding frantically as he buried his face back against my chest.
He clung to the lapels of my coat with every ounce of strength he had left, burying himself in my scent like I was his anchor.
I held him tight against my chest, feeling the frantic, engineered rhythm of his heart beneath my palm. I smoothed my fingers through his dark hair, feeling the heavy, trembling reliance of his entire body pressed against mine.
As his weeping slowly quieted into exhausted, ragged breaths, a quiet, dark smile touched the corners of my lips in the shadow of the quiet bedroom.
I would shield him from the Council. I would tear Darius apart if he ever stepped near him again. No one in the world would ever use him as a breeding experiment.
Except me.
I might protect this puny little human but he would be the one bearing my children.
