Chapter 73: Chapter 73
Lysander’s pov
Darius scrambled for what to say when the words left my lips, his leather soles skidding in his own blood as he glared at me.
He held his torn wrist pressed hard against his ribs, his face a ghostly, waxy white, his chest heaving from anger or pain, I had no idea.
He kept his eyes locked on the silver letter opener in my hand, his teeth bared in a pathetic, terrified sneer.
"You’re a dead boy, Lysander," he choked out, his voice cracking as he hit the elevator call button three times with a bloody thumb. "Both of you... dead..."
Darius threw himself backward inside, collapsing against the handrail, his blood smearing in a dark streak down the polished steel as the doors slid shut between us.
The silence that followed was deafening.
My knees buckled. I caught myself against the corner of the broken marble island, my breath coming in short, shallow hitches. My pale fingers held the silver letter opener so tightly that the carved handle dug deep into my palm, my knuckles turned completely white.
Blood, a mixture of my split lip and the dark crimson from Darius’s wrist dribbled down the blade, hitting the slate tile with a faint tap... tap... tap.
My chest rose and fell in rapid, terrified panting. I was trembling from my ankles to my shoulders, cold sweat gluing my oversized grey sweater to my back.
I froze the same time the air froze.
The steam rising from my mouth turned to thick white mist. The light in the living room died instantly, shadows stretching up the walls like thick black ink spilling across paper.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass, the gray sky went pitch black, a low, bone-rattling rumble of thunder shaking the glass panes in their frames.
The elevator doors slid open again and Drake stepped into the foyer.
The floor vibrated beneath his shoes. His eyes were gone, replaced by two blazing, luminous pools of blood-red fire that illuminated the dark hallway.
Long, curved fangs pressed past his lower lip, glistening under the dim ceiling lights. The air around him grew so heavy, so suffocating, that the air pressure pushed straight down onto my shoulders.
His eyes tracked the shattered wood of the door, the dark blood pooled on the slate, and the dark purple bruise swelling along my jaw.
"What happened?" He hissed.
"Darius was..." I gulped, unable to admit that my step father wanted to harm me.
A sound tore from his chest, a deep, feral, multi-layered roar that made the overhead lights flicker and pop. The shadows around his coat flared outward like living blades. He spun on his heel toward the elevator, his body blurring into a terrifying, lethal streak of motion, intent on tearing through the city until there was nothing left of Darius to bury.
"Drake, no!" I screamed.
I dropped the bloodstained letter opener. The silver metal clattered loud against the stone as I threw my frail frame directly into his path.
I slammed into his chest and wrapped my arms frantically around his waist. I buried my face into his coat, my fingers digging desperately into the thick wool as the wave of his violent aura crashed over me.
"Don’t go!" I sobbed, my entire body shaking against his rigid frame. "Please... don’t leave me alone! I’m scared... Drake, please!"
He went completely still. The feral growling in his throat died down into a low, deep vibration beneath my cheek.
I tilted my head back, my eyes wet and wide as I looked up into those glowing eyes. I reached up on my tiptoes, my trembling fingers cupping his icy jaw, and pulled his head down to press my lips against his.
I poured every ounce of my terror, my exhaustion, and my desperation into him, clinging to his broad shoulders as if he were the only solid thing left in the universe.
In a way he was, he was my anchor right now.
Slowly, the crushing weight in the room thinned. Drake’s long, pale arms slid around my waist, lifting my small frame off the floorboards and pulling me flush against his cold chest.
The fire in his eyes receded, drowning back into dark, fathomless color. He broke the kiss, resting his forehead against mine, his cold breath fanning over my burning skin.
He didn’t look at the damage. He looked down at my face, his thumb brushing over my split lip, his eyes lowering to the bloodstained silver blade lying on the floor. A slow, dark smile touched the corners of his lips,
He leaned down, his lips trailing over my jaw to the pulse point on my throat. He pressed a possessive kiss into my skin.
"We are leaving," he murmured against my neck, his arms tightening around me as he carried me toward the door.
I didn’t bother asking where we were going, he bundled me into the car and started driving.
Two miles off the main highway, behind a set of massive, wrought-iron security gates, the compound rose out of the craggy cliffside like a dark granite fortress. Rain dripped from the needles of towering pine trees, mist clinging to the reinforced steel and slate walls.
Drake carried me through the bronze front doors.
Inside, a fire crackled inside a massive stone hearth, casting a warm, amber glow across soaring timber ceilings, plush velvet couches, and floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking a dark ravine below. It was miles away from the city, completely unmapped, surrounded by silence.
Drake set me down on the vast leather sofa near the fire. He reached over, pulling a heavy cashmere throw over my shoulders, tucking it tight around my arms.
"This is a safe house," he said softly, turning from the hearth to look at me, the firelight catching the sharp angles of his cheekbones. "No human records mark its location. We stay here until Darius is dealt with permanently."
I pulled the heavy blanket higher around my chin, sinking deep into the soft leather, feeling the steady heat of the fire on my face.
I held out my hand toward him from beneath the blanket.
Drake walked over, taking his seat on the edge of the cushion. I leaned directly into his side, wrapping my arms around his arm and resting my head against his shoulder. He rested his hand over mine, his cool fingers locking around my wrist, anchoring me in the dark.
