Chapter 79: Chapter 79

Darius’s pov

I forced myself to stand tall, wiping the wet sheen of blood from my chin with my uninjured cuff.

"You are such a show off, Drake. You should have never underestimated me."

I reached into my inner jacket pocket, pulling out a hardened comms unit, my fingers tapping the direct frequency frantically.

I looked up at the High Council dais, then directly into Drake’s cold eyes, forcing a manic, jagged grin onto my face.

"You must have thought you won, huh? The big bad vampire thought he had won. I didn’t build my empire by cowering." I declared, "I brought the whole arsenal. I have thirty tactical operators trained specifically in supernatural containment. Silver-core ammunition, high-frequency sound emitters, UV flash-flares. They are sitting in three armored transports right outside this shithole, waiting for my signal."

A faint murmur rustled among the lower Council guards lining the perimeter. I eyed the cowards, "yes, that’s right. If I am not getting what I want then I do not have use for any of you."

I glared at Drake who stood still, smirking at me. I felt anger flare hot in my chest.

"You have no move left, Balthazar. I am sure it would go down in history that you were the cause of their death. After you die, I would claim Lysander for myself. Maybe I will finish what I started and spill my seed in his ass."

He growled before shrugging, "Go ahead, Thorne. Call them, I have no problems killing any insect you bring in."

"I am giving you one last chance." I warned.

"Be my guest, do your worse."

I held the radio to my ear, pressing the primary broadcast button.

"Team Alpha, this is Thorne," I barked into the receiver. "Breach the lower sanctuary. Primary target is Balthazar Drake. Execute authorization Code Red."

Silence.

Only a thin, static hiss answered from the tiny speaker.

"Team Alpha, respond," I snapped, my thumb jamming the dial key again, my pulse hammering against my throat. "Team Beta, report in! Miller, get those tactical teams inside this building right now!"

Drake didn’t even take his hands out of his coat pockets. He simply stood, watching me fumble with the plastic radio quietly, that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

"You forgot one small detail, Darius," he purred softly,

My fingers froze over the keypad. "What?"

"Your arsenal arrived forty minutes ago," he continued smoothly, taking a slow step toward me. "A rather noisy bunch. They parked their armored vehicles in the underground loading bay beneath the north nave. They set up their sonic emitters, loaded their silver-core magazines, and prepared their UV charges."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a single, crushed tactical earpiece, dripping with fresh, thick blood and dropped it onto the floor beside my broken phone.

"I cleared them before I walked up to this chamber," Drake whispered, a dark smile touching his lips. "All thirty of them are currently lying in a heap behind the boiler room. You might want to rethink your backup plan."

The comms unit slipped from my numb fingers, clattering uselessly against the stone.

The last pillar of my arrogance crumbled into ash.

Before I could draw a breath to scream, Drake’s hand shot out. His long, ice-cold fingers clamped around my throat like a steel vise, cutting off my air instantly. He lifted my heavy frame clean off the slate floorboards as if I weighed nothing at all.

"You are coming home with me, Darius," Drake murmured into my ear, his breath smelling of arctic frost and iron. "We have so much to discuss regarding Project Zero."

He threw me sideways into the dark archway behind the dais, where two massive, dark-armored vampires caught my flailing body, slamming my arms behind my back and driving heavy iron manacles into my wrists.

The heavy iron chains bit so deep into my skin that I couldn’t feel my fingers anymore.

I was hauled out of the back of the blacked-out transport van, my feet dragging uselessly over the cold mountain slate.

The two vampires held me by my upper arms, their fingers crushing my collarbone through my torn suit jacket. Every step jarred my ruined shoulder, shooting white-hot needles of agony straight up my neck.

"Move, mortal," one of them growled.

"Do you know who I am?!" I screeched, my voice cracking, high and pathetic as my leather shoes slipped on the damp stone. "I am Darius Thorne! You touch me and my legal team will burn this whole place to the ground!"

Neither of them answered. They didn’t even look at me. They dragged me through a set of towering bronze gates and into a vast, open courtyard carved directly into the craggy cliffside.

I lifted my head, gasping for breath through a mouthful of my own blood, looking up at the sprawling granite fortress towering above us.

High above the courtyard, standing on a wide marble balcony framed by high arched windows, was Lysander.

He stood right at the edge of the stone balustrade, looking down at me in the courtyard below. The morning fog curled around his bare throat, exposing the dark violet bite marks left by Drake’s teeth, a glaring sign of ownership that made my blood boil with desperate rage.

"Lysander!" I screamed, my voice echoing wildly off the sheer stone walls of the canyon. I thrusted my body forward, fighting against the iron chains holding my arms.

"Lysander, look at me! You think you’re safe with him?! You’re a freak! He’s going to drain you until there’s nothing left!"

He didn’t flinch. He simply stood on the balcony, his dark eyes looking down at me like I was a vermin.

"I will get out of here!" I roared, tears of rage and pain burning my eyes as the guards shoved me toward a heavy iron trapdoor set into the slate floorboards. "I will break out of this cage! I will hunt you down! I will lock you back in that library where you belong, Lysander! You are mine! Do you hear me?! You are my asset!"

Lysander turned his back on me and walked slowly inside the warm, firelit suite, leaving me screaming into the cold fog.

The heavy iron trapdoor was thrown open, revealing a steep flight of stone stairs leading down into the subterranean belly of the cliff.

I tumbled down six rough stone steps, my head slamming hard against the damp granite wall before I crashed onto the cold, wet floor of a dark cell.

The heavy iron door slammed shut behind me with a thunderous CLANG, the heavy deadbolts sliding into place with mechanical finality.

I lay on the stone, clutching my ruined shoulder, gasping for air in the darkness. The air down here was freezing.

"Lysander..." I whimpered into the dark, "You little freak... I’ll kill you... I’ll kill you..."

Footsteps echoed down the stone corridor outside.

The heavy iron slot on the cell door slid open with a metallic screech. A single beam of crimson light cut through the pitch black, illuminating the dust motes floating in the air above my head.

I looked up, my chest heaving, my bloodshot eyes widening in terror as a pair of glowing red eyes looked down at me through the iron bars.

"I do admire your courage, Darius. Threatening him even in your current state." Drake’s voice purred softly from the hallway, "Let us see if you scream as loudly when I start pulling the answers from your throat."
