Lukas’s body cut through the air in free fall, a sensation that was both terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. For a few seconds, everything seemed to happen too quickly for his brain to process, the world transforming into a blur of colors and movement.
The wind struck his face with force, causing his white hair to whip wildly around his head like a crown of light. The treetops passed around him like blurred green smears, a landscape moving at a dizzying speed.
The sky seemed far too distant, a deep blue that was moving away as the ground approached at a speed his brain still couldn’t accept.
His stomach contracted, his survival instinct screaming in his ears. His arms instinctively spread open, trying to regain his balance as if he could find support in the empty air.
"Damn!" The word escaped his lips, charged with adrenaline.
There was nothing beneath his feet. No branch to grab onto, no surface where he could brace himself, no hope of stopping the fall. Only air, the cold wind against his face, and the ground approaching relentlessly.
Then, at the last instant, Lukas felt the mana within his Lunar Source react.
It wasn’t a conscious thought. There was no time for planning or strategy. His body simply obeyed instinct, weeks of training and preparation manifesting in a single moment of pure intuition.
The mana stored in his chest exploded through the five main channels and spread throughout his body like a river breaking through a dam. Legs, arms, torso, neck, head, everything was enveloped by that cold and powerful energy, a protective layer that formed in fractions of a second.
The next instant...
’BOOM!’
Lukas landed on his back against the ground of the clearing, the impact echoing through the forest like thunder. Dirt and dry leaves flew in all directions, creating a cloud of dust that rose into the air. The force was enough to create a small depression in the ground, an improvised crater that bore witness to the violence of the fall.
The air escaped his lungs all at once, an impact sound followed by absolute silence.
"Ugh!"
He remained motionless for several seconds, his eyes fixed on the sky visible through the treetops. He waited for the pain, waited to hear some bone breaking, waited for that terrible sensation that should have accompanied a fall from such a height.
But...
Nothing.
There was only a strong pressure in his back and a tingling sensation running through his muscles, as if a thousand tiny needles were awakening his skin. No broken bones, no significant pain, no sign that his body had suffered any real damage.
Lukas blinked several times, looking at the sky through the treetops. The leaves swayed gently, as if the forest itself were laughing at his recklessness.
Then he slowly exhaled, a nervous laugh escaping his mouth.
"I almost got myself killed..."
He turned his body, placed his hands on the ground, and stood up, his movements still slightly shaky. He brushed the dirt from his clothes, feeling the tiny grains of dust falling away from the fabric.
His heart was still racing, the beats echoing in his ears. That had been... incredible. And also extremely stupid.
...
A few hours earlier...
...
The sun had not yet fully risen when Lukas opened his eyes, the darkness of the room slowly being replaced by the faint light of dawn.
The room remained immersed in a bluish twilight, the outlines of the furniture beginning to reveal themselves. Through the window, the sky was slowly beginning to brighten, but the light was still faint, only enough to break the complete darkness.
For a few seconds, Lukas remained lying down, staring at the wooden ceiling with his eyes still heavy with sleep. His breathing was calm and steady, but his mind was already awake, revolving around what would come that day.
Then he remembered.
Today. Finally. After days of forming the Lunar Source, after five nights establishing the main channels, after resting, after discovering Rourke’s ability... today he would begin his true warrior training. The moment he had been waiting for ever since he first heard Clavor talk about mana and warriors.
A smile appeared on his face, illuminating his features still marked by sleep.
Lukas got out of bed with an agile movement, his feet touching the cold wooden floor. Astra was still sleeping on top of the wardrobe, her wings folded against her body, her white plumage shining softly in the dim light.
Tilbo was lying in his usual corner, breathing deeply, his enormous form motionless. Rourke remained hidden inside the burrow, only his snout visible among the fabrics.
Prata was not there, probably having gone out during the night to hunt, as she did on some nights.
Lukas put on his simple, dark training clothes, his movements quick and economical, just as his training had taught him. He tightened his boots, adjusted his white hair, and took one last look at his companions, a grateful smile on his lips.
"Let’s begin."
He went down the stairs, his footsteps echoing through the silence of the sleeping mansion. The house was still quiet, the corridors empty, with only the faint light of dawn entering through the windows.
When he reached the dining room, he found the family gathered. Clavor was sitting at the table, holding a small cup of tea while reading a dark-covered book, his eyes moving attentively across the pages.
Aurora was arranging breakfast, placing freshly baked bread, eggs, and some fruit on the table with her precise and efficient movements.
Judite seemed particularly sleepy that morning. She was sitting with her eyes half-closed, poking at her plate with her fork without showing much desire to eat, her head swaying slightly.
Lukas approached, his energy contrasting with his sister’s sleepiness.
"Good morning."
Aurora turned her face and smiled, her eyes lighting up when she saw her son.
"Good morning, Lukas. You’re up early."
"Today the reinforcement begins." The sentence came out naturally, filled with anticipation.
The sentence made Judite raise her eyes, her curiosity momentarily overcoming her tiredness. Clavor also closed the book, his eyes fixing on his son.
