Revant plummeted from the dark clouds like a sinister meteor burning with black flames. He streaked across the sky straight toward the endless spines of the wall that extended across the vast land that seemed to bend away from him. But there was nowhere the land could go.
As it was bound to the world by the laws of nature, it also was bound to the virulent diseases of Endless Despair by inevitability.
Revant collided with the ground, and the next moment... the world was brutally assaulted.
The ground from the point of collision unraveled furiously, as if it were being razed by a vicious, demented plague and could only preserve itself by cutting away its vast body into smaller pieces. But the plague was just as fast, streaking forward with frightening speed while shards of severed rock continued to fly through the air.
That vicious, demented plague was merely a shockwave — an inevitability of Revant’s fall. It rolled across the land in all directions, assaulting and unraveling the ground with relentless force.
The wind exploded outward, crashing against the wall. Of course, the walls of the Empire — said to have been crafted from the spine of a Leviathan — stood defiantly against the violent winds. Soon, everything calmed.
Annette was also descending, staring down in pale horror.
"Did he have to make such a terrific entrance? Stars, how do I match that? He was supposed to help us!"
"Master, I really think you should stop complaining."
Held beneath her armpit was Vida, whose black hair flickered backward as they streaked through the air, falling at a steady pace.
On the ground, several figures already stood upon the wall, having instantly recognized the dangerous threat the heavens had sent — one that now stood before their walls with its hands behind his back.
"What in the world?"
"Is he mad?"
"A mere man! How dare he?"
"Who is this fool?!"
"Scram away from here, we have no time to play with you!"
Different voices screamed with contempt from the top of the walls. Most sounded dismissive, glaring down at Revant with hatred, while some wore frivolous expressions.
Revant, however, simply stood there, his hands clasped behind him, waiting and looking up.
"Damnit, why is she so slow..."
Of course, his role was simply to assist Annette, which meant that unless he felt she was in intense danger, he was going to stand here until all of this was over.
He also knew Northern was using this opportunity to test the limits of Annette’s strength. That boy was surely up to something. He just couldn’t tell what. He could use the link they shared, but these days, he did not dare.
With how Northern was fragmenting his thoughts across multiple cognitive streams and somehow managing to maintain them, Revant had once tried entering Northern’s mind and almost went mad from the amount of information that poured into his head.
Operating close to a hundred clones, it was as if Northern were training himself to be a hundred people at the same time. Receiving the information of a hundred minds had almost driven Revant mad, and he vowed never to use that ability carelessly again.
Northern had also caught him in that moment. Since that reckless endeavor, Revant had found Northern’s footprints in his mind more and more often, and even now he was there... observing the world through the information pouring into his mind.
And there was nothing Revant could do about it.
Revant stared at the walls, a vicious, impenetrable darkness veiling his face. Left to him, he would have ended this before it began.
The air changed, the temperature rising rapidly. Even though he did not see it, his clothes were not as indifferent as he was. Smoke seeped from the fabric, and a crisply burnt scent saturated the air around him.
This caused him to shift his gaze upward.
As he did, it was as if a gateway opened in the sky.
A pillar of pure, solidified flame fell from the heavens and struck the wall. What looked like sparks, as if swords were clashing together, scattered from the impact as the pillar of flame touched the wall. Simultaneously, a scalding wind exploded outward from the impact, ravaging the soldiers in dark crimson armor. Their bodies flew backward, rolling and being hurled as though they were nothing but weightless broken dolls.
The spills from the collision that resembled sparks fell upon the ground and instantly corroded it with a cold hiss, leaving abyssal grooves around Revant. Some spilled onto the wall and only hissed with scalding smoke. However, the wall remained without scratches.
Revant stared, the corner of his mouth curving in faint amusement.
Another pillar fell from the sky, and the flames spilled even more furiously, devouring the ground beneath the wall with ravenous, infernal heat. The wall merely received a scratch from the incandescent force.
Annette stared in bewilderment, her eyes wide.
"Ohhh... the legends are true!"
Vida stared downward in weariness.
"What legend? Why do you sound so excited? This means we’re going to waste time here." She spoke with displeasure. "I thought we could be quick with it and impress Lord Northern."
Annette looked at the girl tucked under her arm.
"Lord Northern?"
Vida gave her a defensive glare.
"It’s hard to call him by name when everyone addresses him with such respect, you know?"
She glanced down, hiding the red blush blooming on her brown skin.
"And he’s gotten much taller and different from when we were on the Dark Continent, even though it’s only been about a year."
Annette sighed and shook her head.
"What is it with you little girls who have absolutely no restraint around men?"
She glanced downward again and noticed that the soldiers were already rapidly gathering, filling the wall like surging floods of black and red.
"Oh well, that was fast."
Vida also looked down.
The cohesion of the Empire’s soldiers was almost impossible—they moved like a single force.
"Those are the Gate Wardens you were nervous about?"
Annette let out a short, sardonic laugh.
"What? Hell no. Let’s pray those mystical bastards don’t show up."
"Even if they do, we can just enlist Sir Revant’s assistance."
Annette tilted her head to look at Vida and grinned insinuatingly.
"You want to get looked down on by Northern."
Vida looked lost. Annette, still plummeting, turned her gaze toward the wall.
"That crackhead... I’m certain of it. He’s doing this to test us and is probably watching somewhere. He seems to be gauging our powers for some reason."
Vida’s eyes widened as she heard this, as if sudden enlightenment struck her.
A lethal darkness climbed her face immediately.
"Master, please drop me. I will deal with the soldiers on the wall. You deal with destroying the wall."
Seeing the look on her face, Annette stared in stunned silence. Then a fierce, drunken grin spread across her face and she let go of Vida, slapping her downward with explosive force that sent flames spilling across the air.
"Have it your way, little girl!"
Vida pierced downward like lightning.
"Agh. Stop calling me that."
She pouted briefly, but at the same time the darkness of her armor spread across her face and solidified into four ominous eyes.
And she landed on the wall, releasing a devastating, concentric shockwave.
