Annette dove lower, not floating close to the wall but not quite far from it either. She spread both arms into the air, and for a moment the world seemed to hold its breath as an undulating heat warped the surrounding air.
The heat invisibly slammed against the wall, as if wanting to test its resolve one more time, but it was merely shrugged away by the gargantuan silence of the formidable wall.
Yet the space around her crackled with terrifying pressure, sparks of flame flying wildly around. Behind the wall, more soldiers were rising. Annette could see their armor, which was different from the usual black and red the Empire wore.
These ones wore brown leather armor, seemingly cut from solid slabs of leather instead of sewn together. They wore no helmets, but instead bore hardened, defiant faces and long vermilion hair that flowed down their backs, bearing an uncanny resemblance to hers.
She stared down with deep hatred brimming in her eyes.
’They came after all.’
Of course, the only people capable of building the impossible wall were her esteemed Clan. She knew that much, and Northern knew that much. And to take down the wall, she would have to defeat them in battle.
She thought about it once more and couldn’t help but hiss silent curses at Northern.
Then stars of flame began to tear out of nothingness all around her. Instantly, the world was painted in a million shades of fire, intense yet unexpectedly beautiful. For a moment it looked like the sun was about to pierce its way from beyond the horizon, far out of schedule.
The next moment, however, destruction sang a horrific lullaby.
The flames ignited with concussive force, exploding against the enormous body of the wall. There were two explosions: the first propelled the flame forward, creating additional force, while the second detonated against the wall, multiplying its power and fury in an attempt to destroy it.
Annette spread her hands wide and simply began to detonate flames against the wall of the Empire. A vertical pillar of fire appeared from her position and plunged straight onto the surface of the wall with a destructive impact that exploded in rings of shockwaves.
For a moment, the wall trembled, and a violent, maddening wind raged across its surface.
Revant, from his position with his hands clasped behind him, stared at Annette with an intrigued light in his eyes.
He found Annette’s explosive expenditure of essence to be a reckless endeavor—but that was only before he took a deeper look into her soul. His eyes widened when he saw the nature of her soul core.
In order to improve the potency of the soul and ascend to a new rank, one needed to absorb essence continually. This would help nurture the soul quietly until it reached the brink.
But Annette was slightly different from the usual method, albeit still following the same pattern.
’Just like him...’
Unlike the said "him," however, Annette possessed a soul core. The "him" didn’t have one at all — which was already an impossibility. As if that simply wasn’t enough, his soul was a vast, formless, endless sea. It had first been formless, had always been formless, and recently the domain of that formlessness had been vastly affected by the Seed of Endless, making his formlessness truly endless.
At the same time, he wasn’t quite there yet. The size of his endless soul was simply growing — slowly — otherwise his body could shatter if he hurried the process.
But this was not about his master. However, there was a candid resemblance between that ascension and the nature of the power Annette carried.
Like Northern, she didn’t have to necessarily absorb soul essence. She absorbed fire essence. Even as she expended her essence to create this chilling bombardment of flames, she was at the same time recycling the remnants of burning fire essence back into her soul — fueling the growth of her soul and gaining more essence to expend.
The only problem was that the rate she was taking back in was nothing compared to what she was dishing out, and it seemed she was well aware of it.
However, Annette did not seem to care, still pouring all of her fire essence into the relentless attacks she unleashed.
The world drowned in the thunderous roar of her flames. Their radiant colors swallowed the skies above and the land below, and their force devoured the ground beneath like a ravenous, invisible beast.
On the wall, a tenebrous maelstrom struck the soldiers. The moment Vida saw the new entrants, she increased her pace — shifting from calm offense to brutal destruction, refusing to spare them even a moment to focus on Annette.
The men burst forward with ignitions of flame. Their speed would have been frightening if she didn’t have two extra eyes that worked solely for her armor, giving it a neural function perfectly synchronized with her reflexes at neck-breaking speed.
She twirled before the ignition that arrived from one man’s palm could hit her. Her hand shot out and instantly tore into his chest, easily ripping through his leather armor.
The man stared down in shock, blood pooling in his mouth and drenching his jaw.
Another one came, but Vida had already moved. She clawed her hand and slashed the man down like a savage beast before he even knew what was coming.
As another entered the fray, her leg flew back around and crushed him to his knees. She walked forward, grabbed his hair, and threw him off the wall. The next moment he met a detonating end at the fiery hands of Annette’s flames.
More men surrounded her; they seemingly had no end. But Vida did not care about the numbers. Her body was burning with a different kind of strength today. She didn’t even know how long it had been since she had gone all out.
’Since the Dark Continent...’
Having had to hunt every day back then, but when she returned, her hunt for monsters reduced—and so did her growth. It was disheartening that she was using human lives to fuel her combat experience. But a win was a win nonetheless.
The thunderous bombardment finally came to a cease. Annette plunged to the ground and landed on her knees, heaving heavily. A great mist of smoke slid off the wall, veiling its surface. But slowly it cleared.
Annette raised her head anxiously, curious how much damage she had carved into the indestructible wall.
As the smoke cleared completely, a small shallow groove could be seen on the wall — no more than the mark of a nail slightly hammered into stone.
The size of the damage was no larger than a human head.
Annette’s gaze widened with shock and disbelief.
At the same time, the wall’s surface seemed to shift like mud, and that little groove slowly began restoring itself.
Her shock transformed into terror.
