I Can Reincarnate Infinitely
Chapter 208 - 204: Garrisoning the Desolate AbyssDesolate means barren. A place where the four grains do not grow is called desolate.
Abyss means deep. Water that emerges from the earth but does not flow is called an abyss.
To put it bluntly, the literal meaning of "Desolate Abyss" is a very, very deep pool of water in some godforsaken place. The water might even be a little smelly; after all, running water never goes stale, and an abyss is a body of stagnant water.
However, after Du Youqian’s Flying Boat landed in the Desolate Abyss, he saw no pool of water. Instead, he saw a massive pit, so vast he couldn’t see its edges and so deep it seemed bottomless.
Even with his eyesight and a Divine Sense that could probe nearly 2,300 zhang, he couldn’t reach the bottom. It was truly profound.
Even if you couldn’t fit the Himalayas in this pit, you could at least fit the Alps.
"Is the bottom of this pit filled with the corpses of the Demon Race?" Du Youqian asked, peering over the edge.
The pit wasn’t a sheer ninety-degree drop, but it was still extremely steep.
After several li, the slope grew even steeper, dropping off sharply.
Looking closely, one would find the pit’s walls were covered in fine gravel, dotted with numerous seashells and fragments of coral. The sight was suffused with a sense of ancient desolation.
In other words, this place was once a... sea.
Master Wan Shi, who was traveling with him, wore a compassionate expression. "Not entirely. It is said that at the bottom lies a collapsed Blessed Land. Within that Blessed Land are the bodies of many of our Human Race predecessors, entangled with the corpses of the Demon Race, impossible to retrieve."
"Is that so? Although I don’t know much about that battle, I can feel that it must have been incredibly brutal," Du Youqian sighed softly. "How magnificent, our Human Race predecessors!"
He was deliberately trying to get on Master Wan Shi’s good side.
’Master Wan Shi might not be stunningly beautiful, but she’s incredibly powerful! I have to garrison this place for ten years, so I need to make as many friends and as few enemies as possible. That way, if something goes wrong, someone will be there to help me. I won’t be all alone. As for Fang Hua? If I really encountered a powerful enemy, she’d be the one needing me to save her.’
On the Desolate Abyss battlefield, it was basically impossible to get anywhere without Core Formation Combat Power.
However, Du Youqian didn’t regret bringing Fang Hua. After all, she could grow more effectively here.
What Fang Hua lacked now wasn’t Cultivation, Secret Techniques, or Sword Intent, and certainly not equipment.
It was combat experience.
After lamenting over the former sea, now a great pit, Master Wan Shi led Du Youqian to the temporary cave residences to get settled.
Master Wan Shi had arrived half a month before Du Youqian and was already quite familiar with the place.
The two of them walked ahead, talking and laughing.
Behind them walked a solitary Fang Hua.
And behind her were the ten Holy Blood Sect Cultivators Du Youqian had brought along. All of them were at the Foundation Establishment Late Stage or Foundation Establishment Perfection, but with little hope of reaching Core Formation.
Fang Hua looked up.
’From the back, one is a handsome young man with a slender figure and magnificent robes; the other is a graceful young daoist priestess in a simple crane robe, her beautiful hair cascading like a waterfall. They look like a perfect match.’
However, Fang Hua noticed that Du Youqian was deliberately keeping a bit of distance from Master Wan Shi.
’It isn’t the kind of distance kept to avoid impropriety between a man and a woman; rather, it seems to stem from vigilance and fear toward Master Wan Shi.’
Fang Hua recalled something Gu Xiaofang had once told her as a joke: back then, in the Cyan Yang Sect’s relics, Du Youqian had clearly seen Songyangzi, the Golden Core Seed of the Chongzhen Sect, but hadn’t rescued him, instead leaving him to be lost in the ruins.
’So many years have passed without any news of Songyangzi; he probably really did die in those relics.’
’The Chongzhen Sect’s loss was not small, so it would be completely understandable if Master Wan Shi held a grudge against Du Youqian.’
But a woman’s intuition told Fang Hua that not only did Master Wan Shi bear no ill will toward Du Youqian, but beyond her curiosity and scrutiny, there was even a faint trace of goodwill. ’Du Youqian’s wariness and vigilance are completely unfounded.’
On the way to the area with the temporary cave residences, Master Wan Shi gave Du Youqian a rundown of the situation here.
Currently, there were over forty Foundation Establishment Cultivators stationed at the Desolate Abyss, and a total of five with Core Formation Combat Power.
The Taihe Sect and the Holy Blood Sect each provided one.
The other seven major Second-class Sects provided a total of three, and it was up to them to negotiate the length of service and personnel assignments. In short, they had to ensure a constant presence of three individuals with Core Formation Combat Power.
All matters, big or small, were to be decided by these five individuals.
Of course, the opinions of the Taihe Sect and the Holy Blood Sect representatives carried the most weight.
If the representatives from the Taihe Sect and the Holy Blood Sect disagreed, the final decision would depend on who the other three supported.
Among the so-called five with Core Formation Combat Power, only four were true Core Formation Masters: Chongxu Master of the Taihe Sect, Master Wan Shi of the Chongzhen Sect, Yu Ming Master of the Ten Thousand Laws Sect, and Lotus Leaf Master of the Red Lotus Sect.
Although some people grumbled about Du Youqian being counted as one of them, no one openly opposed it.
After all, firstly, Du Youqian was the current generation’s True Inheritor of the Holy Blood Sect, a position of great prestige. Secondly, he had a record of fighting a Core Formation Cultivator to a standstill, proving he truly had Core Formation Combat Power.
Therefore, no one could say the Holy Blood Sect was being perfunctory.
If they had known Du Youqian had refined an Outer Pill, they would have had even less reason to object.
It was a widely acknowledged fact that a Perfect Foundation Establishment Cultivator with an Outer Pill could, in a short burst, unleash combat power far exceeding that of a Core Formation Early Stage Cultivator who had yet to comprehend any Divine Abilities.
As Master Wan Shi explained all this to Du Youqian, she gently pressed her slender, jade-like fingers against the hilt of the quaintly-styled Water Yu Sword at her waist.
Ever since she saw Du Youqian, the Treasure had been incredibly agitated, humming softly as if eager for a fight.
Master Wan Shi had been refining this sword for a long time and could even sense the Water Yu Sword’s emotions—a mix of admiration, yearning, and a desire to challenge.
’I can understand the desire to challenge, but what’s this admiration and yearning for? Could it be that this True Inheritor of the Holy Blood Sect possesses the Demon Core of a demon with a bloodline superior to the "Yu"? Or perhaps it’s the Demon Core of an ape or monkey-type demon.’
The Water Yu Sword had been forged thousands of years ago when this branch of the Chongzhen Sect had just relocated to Momenan. A Sect elder had used a "Yu" Demon Core from their inventory as its core.
The "Yu" was a powerful type of demon; an adult Yu could even potentially surpass the Nascent Soul Realm.
Therefore, although this "Yu" Demon Core was only Tier Three, it possessed immense potential.
When forged with other precious materials, the resulting Water Yu Sword had the potential to surpass the Lower Grade.
Treasures were exceedingly rare, and improving their quality was extremely difficult.
Lower Grade Treasures were standard for Core Formation Cultivators, while Nascent Soul Great Powers typically used Middle Grade Treasures.
If the Water Yu Sword could advance to a Mid Level Treasure, it would grant the Chongzhen Sect the power to suppress the other six major Second-class Sects.
As for challenging the Taihe Sect and the Holy Blood Sect, that was unthinkable. Not even a madman would dream of it.
Both of these sects were protected by a Spiritual Treasure—and not an ordinary one, but a Spiritual Treasure approaching the level of an Immortal Artifact.
According to ancient records, Spiritual Treasures were items wielded by "Immortals."
As for Immortal Artifacts, only a handful had ever existed since the dawn of time, and legend said they were long since lost.
In an age without Immortal Artifacts, even on the brutal battlefields of the outside world, Spiritual Treasures were the absolute pinnacle of power.
Of course, Master Wan Shi didn’t dare to fantasize about obtaining a Spiritual Treasure.
’However, if I can interact more with Du Youqian, I might be able to help the Water Yu Sword save several thousand years of development and advance to a Middle Grade Treasure ahead of schedule.’

Du Youqian got acquainted with the other Core Formation Masters and then threw himself into the daily routine of his garrison duty.
The long border of the vast Desolate Abyss was divided into four sections.
A Tier Three Array Master had set up monitoring arrays along each of the four border sections.
The four Core Formation Masters leading the teams each day were responsible for one of these sections.
In other words, for every four days on duty, they had one day of rest.
It was roughly equivalent to having a two-day weekend every week.
As a Core Formation Master, he didn’t need to patrol the border personally. He just had to dispatch the Foundation Establishment Cultivators under his command, stay at the central hub to direct them remotely, and fly out to provide support if anything unusual happened.
So, the daily garrison work wasn’t tiring, just a bit tedious.
Of course, it wasn’t exactly boring.
Because even though the garrisoned Masters couldn’t enter deep seclusion, they could still meditate, practice breathing exercises, and cultivate their Secret Techniques.
The frequency of Demon Zombie appearances wasn’t that high.
And most of the time, the ones that crawled out of the Desolate Abyss were ordinary Demon Beast zombies without Demon Cores.
You’d be lucky to encounter a Demon Zombie with a Demon Core even once a year.
Of course, a frequency like that was normal.
Otherwise, just how many demons at or above the Core Formation Realm would have to be in the Desolate Abyss?
In truth, a Demon Zombie with a Demon Core didn’t require a Core Formation Master to deal with it.
Back when Du Youqian had just reached Foundation Establishment, he had single-handedly killed a Demon Zombie with a Demon Core, albeit with the help of a Grand Array.
A squad of Late Stage and Perfection Foundation Establishment Cultivators—especially a well-equipped, well-trained, and well-coordinated one with small arrays, sufficient Talismans, and Spiritual Jade—was more than enough to deal with a Demon Zombie that had a Demon Core.
There was no need for a Core Formation Master to intervene at all.
The reason Du Youqian and the others with Core Formation Combat Power were garrisoned here was mainly to guard against the zombies of Nascent Soul Realm demons.
Such Demon Zombies were, of course, exceedingly rare.
In the several decades prior, a zombie of that level had only appeared once.
But when it did, the three Core Formation Masters on duty at the time had to join forces just to barely hold it off until reinforcements arrived.
Because they had struggled so much to handle it, the garrison for the Desolate Abyss was later increased to five individuals with Core Formation Combat Power.
Du Youqian didn’t know if he would encounter a Nascent Soul Level Demon Zombie during his next ten years of service.
’I have a feeling my luck isn’t very good.’
Because a Core Formation Demon Zombie, which should theoretically only appear once every few years, had shown up just over twenty days after he arrived at the Desolate Abyss.
And that Core Formation Realm Demon Zombie had crawled out from the very section he was responsible for.
Du Youqian only stood guard nearby, holding the line; he didn’t make a move.
The ones who acted were the squad of Foundation Establishment Cultivators under his command.
More than half of the Foundation Establishment Cultivators in his squad were from the Holy Blood Sect—the reason it was only half was that the skill levels of the Foundation Establishment Cultivators from other sects were uneven, so they had to be mixed with cultivators from the Taihe and Holy Blood Sects to form a solid backbone.
