Carefully crossing the plaza, the two of them and the monkey stopped at the archway Feng Xiaoyi had mentioned.
Beyond the archway was a lush courtyard.
Deeper in the courtyard, tucked away among the trees, there appeared to be a rockery, some buildings, and a pond.
Du Youqian first extended his Divine Sense to observe, discovering that while there were Arrays inside, they weren’t dangerous—just a few ordinary ones for ventilation, temperature control, and the like.
Still uneasy, he turned his head and asked, "Master, there shouldn’t be any mechanisms, traps, or Puppets in here, right?"
Feng Xiaoyi said irritably, "Normally, even if eight or ten Golden Core Late Stage Masters showed up, they couldn’t break through the defense of these four Tier Four Puppets. Do you really think I would need to set up any more traps in here?"
Du Youqian looked at her skeptically. "Then, Master, why do you have such a strange expression?"
Feng Xiaoyi bit her lip, putting on a pitifully endearing expression. "It’s because I see how powerful my dear disciple is. The student has far surpassed the master. In here, I’m completely helpless. If your devotion were to... turn sour, and you were to give in to your baser instincts, then I... could only..."
She bit her lip and lowered her head bashfully. "I could only submit to you..."
Little Wukong’s curious eyes widened as it watched her, seemingly thinking, ’This female human is acting so strange.’
Du Youqian watched her little performance with a blank expression.
Today was, without a doubt, the day Feng Xiaoyi had shown the least bit of a master’s dignity since they had met.
’And now she’s resorting to seduction and Charm... Alright, she’s tried it before, but never this brazenly.’
Before, she had always played her games from a position of superiority, looking down on him like a queen.
But Feng Xiaoyi’s current attitude was one of professed weakness; she didn’t dare to contend with him, instead trying to please him from a position of frailty.
This shift in attitude was very telling.
Du Youqian actually breathed an inward sigh of relief.
It meant that Feng Xiaoyi was genuinely intimidated by his strength.
It also indirectly proved that Feng Xiaoyi’s own power wasn’t all that impressive.
Even if Feng Xiaoyi was plotting some scheme to use against him, he was confident he could overwhelm her tricks with brute force.
"Master, you once stood out from the ranks of the Eight Desolates Hall. Why do you say you aren’t skilled in combat?"
Du Youqian asked as they walked into the courtyard.
Feng Xiaoyi seemed a bit uncomfortable, but after a moment’s thought, she answered, "I am very skilled in Illusion Techniques."
Du Youqian’s mind raced, and he immediately understood.
Feng Xiaoyi had always said she was a Fox Demon. And besides Charm, a Fox Demon’s greatest strength was Illusion Techniques, while they often lacked raw power.
So, Feng Xiaoyi was implying that much of her past combat record had been fabricated with Illusion Techniques.
"Master, what is your real name? Liu Hua must have been your alias when you were infiltrating the Human Race."
The question made Feng Xiaoyi stop in her tracks.
For the first time, the bewitching expression on her face was replaced by one of bewilderment and loss, as if someone had just reopened a scar she was unwilling to face.
A moment later, her expression softened considerably. Her eyes held a trace of nostalgia as she shook her head. "I’ve forgotten it myself. I haven’t used that name in nearly ten thousand years."
"So you really are over nine thousand years old."
"!!!"
Soon, they had crossed half the courtyard, and Feng Xiaoyi paused by the edge of the pond.
Even though no one had been here for thousands of years, the pond water remained crystal clear thanks to the still-functioning Arrays, and koi fish still swished their tails within it.
Du Youqian couldn’t help but be impressed.
With his current level of skill in Arrays, he knew he couldn’t possibly create an Array that would still function properly after several millennia.
Not even with a continuous supply of Spiritual Diamonds.
’If... nothing unexpected happens today, if Feng Xiaoyi truly has no ill intentions, and if we can both amicably get what we came for, then in the future, I should really ask her for some pointers on the art of Arrays.’
Feng Xiaoyi peered into the pond, the water reflecting her breathtakingly beautiful face.
"My mind is in turmoil... We’ve made it this far, and everything seems to be going smoothly. But what happens next?"
As she spoke, she proactively linked her arm with Du Youqian’s. Her sigh was a complex, winding thing. "Dear disciple, you won’t betray me, will you?"
She gazed into the pond at the reflection of Du Youqian’s impassive face and the fuzzy little monkey on his shoulder.
Du Youqian’s heart wavered.
He didn’t quite understand why Feng Xiaoyi was so openly displaying her vulnerability and anxiety.
She was practically letting him have his way with her.
This was not at all how a nine-thousand-year-old fox should act.
’Wait a minute!’
A flash of insight struck him.
The Pupil Technique Du Youqian cultivated wasn’t useless, but it was clearly out of its league against a fox skilled in Illusion Techniques. Fortunately, he was prepared. He quickly tossed out a Treasure.
Out of a peculiar sense of humor, he had fashioned this Treasure—which could Eliminate Delusion and Break Illusions—into the shape of a drone.
The Treasure circled overhead, and Feng Xiaoyi’s figure gradually faded away.
"That old fox!" Du Youqian cursed in frustration.
The little monkey on his shoulder was confused. ’Why did Big Brother just have the same look he gets when he sees a pretty female monkey? That female human clearly went ahead on her own back at the archway.’
Du Youqian didn’t waste time feeling sorry for himself. He sped up and rushed toward the row of buildings ahead.
Moving at full speed, he reached the door in an instant.
From one of the rooms, he heard Feng Xiaoyi’s melodious laughter.
Du Youqian had learned his lesson. He first sent out his Eliminating Illusions Treasure to confirm that this was Feng Xiaoyi’s true location before pushing open the ajar door and heading inside.
Inside, Feng Xiaoyi was reclining on a daybed crafted from fine Meiyu jade. Her body was elegantly displayed, a breathtaking landscape of enchanting curves.
Behind her was a screen painted with a landscape of mountains and water.
Du Youqian’s eyes were fixed on the screen. ’What could be hidden behind it?’
Whatever it was, it made his heart thrum violently, as if they shared a profound connection.
However, Du Youqian suppressed his Emotions and let none of it show on his face.
Little Wukong seemed to have sensed something too, for it chittered at Du Youqian, "CHITTER CHITTER CHITTER CHITTER."
Du Youqian raised a hand to pat it, signaling it to be quiet.
Feng Xiaoyi watched Du Youqian with a smile. "Dear disciple, you’re quite sharp."
Du Youqian surveyed the room and sensed the surrounding Arrays, his brow furrowing slightly.
Feng Xiaoyi said in a gentle voice, "Thank you, dear disciple. I have finally regained control of my dwelling. From now on, you can look around wherever you please. I still have some trivial matters to attend to, so I won’t be able to accompany you!"
Seeing her act this way, Du Youqian felt a little more at ease.
’Perhaps her many tricks were just for self-preservation.’
’In her eyes, I must seem quite terrifying and not very trustworthy, right?’
With this thought, Du Youqian’s anger subsided. Any lingering frustration was buried deep as he smiled. "It is what I should do as your disciple; there’s no need for thanks, Master. By the way, Master, I would like to see the Teleportation Array. I want to personally teleport to the Desolate Desert and take a look. Would you permit this?"
Feng Xiaoyi gave a lazy smile. "Go ahead, dear disciple. The Teleportation Array is in the adjacent room. However, it currently has no Star Diamonds, so you’ll need to use your own. Also, the environment in the Desolate Desert is extremely harsh. Remember, do not wander about."
"Oh, and one more thing. The Teleportation Array on the other side hasn’t been maintained in thousands of years. Given the environment there, even I can’t guarantee that it will still function properly. So, there’s a risk involved if you go. Understand?"
Du Youqian was silent for a moment before nodding. "I understand."
He turned and left the room, forcing himself not to glance back at the screen.
’The miraculous item Feng Xiaoyi mentioned... it caused a fundamental change in her soul, allowing her to live for thousands of years through continuous Possession.’
’Such a miraculous object must be behind that screen, right?’
A flicker of greed ignited in Du Youqian’s heart, but he quickly extinguished it.
’This is Feng Xiaoyi’s fated opportunity, not mine.’
’So far, Feng Xiaoyi has treated me reasonably well.’
’As long as she doesn’t betray me, I will not betray her.’
’That miraculous item... I shouldn’t covet it.’
’Besides, I can undergo Reincarnation endlessly.’
’Perhaps in a few thousand years, I’ll still be alive. By then, I might have become a true Great Power through my Cultivation in the Human World. If Feng Xiaoyi is gone by then, I can always come back and claim this opportunity for myself.’
’I just have to be patient.’
His mind now much clearer, Du Youqian stepped into the adjacent room. It was empty save for a single object in the very center: a Teleportation Array of ancient design, etched with complex patterns and constructed from many precious materials.
Little Wukong jumped down. Imitating an old human scholar, it clasped its hands behind its back, bent at the waist, and made a show of studying the Teleportation Array.
After a moment, it threw up its front paws. "CHITTER CHITTER CHITTER CHITTER!"
’This is too hard! This monkey can’t figure it out!’
Du Youqian laughed. "If you want to learn about Arrays, you have to start with the fundamentals."
The monkey waved its paws. "CHITTER CHITTER CHITTER!"
’Forget it! I don’t want to learn! This monkey doesn’t like it!’
Du Youqian also crouched down to study it seriously.
The Teleportation Array wasn’t large, less than two meters in diameter. Du Youqian examined it carefully. Based on his rudimentary Tier Three knowledge of Arrays, he judged that the Array showed no obvious signs of malfunction.
’Teleporting to the Desolate Desert from here shouldn’t be a problem.’
’Even if the Array on the Desolate Desert end has malfunctioned due to spatial turbulence near the passage, I can take a chance and try to head south back to the regions inhabited by the Human Race.’
’It would be difficult, but not impossible.’
’Today, I have to go see for myself!’
