Du Youqian shook his head at Luo Jinyu and sent a message with his Divine Sense: "Stay calm."
Luo Jinyu lowered his head, silent.
Shi Shentong seemed to notice Du Youqian’s subtle exchange but said nothing.
A True Inheritance Core Formation Master was one of their own—part of the inner circle. There was nothing to say.
It was true that everyone had their own selfish motives.
But when it came to external affairs, the Sect’s True Inheritance Core Formation Masters could still present a united front.
Du Youqian knew full well that Shi Shentong wasn’t targeting him personally.
In truth, every True Inheritor built their own power base and cultivated a team of followers.
It was just that some True Inheritors could nurture followers to Core Formation, while others could only manage Foundation Establishment Perfection.
Someone like Du Youqian, who had single-handedly nurtured three followers to Core Formation, was a rarity—but not entirely unheard of.
For instance, among Shi Shentong’s own Direct Lineage, there were three Core Formation Masters. One had already volunteered for the sacrifice, presumably after having negotiated terms with Shi Shentong long ago.
Shi Shentong continued to survey the ten or so remaining Core Formation Masters from the other sects.
From these ten or so people, three had to be chosen for the offering. Not only would it consume all their Essence Blood, but it would also sacrifice their very souls, ensuring they would never enter the cycle of Reincarnation.
For a Cultivator, this was the most horrific way to die.
But standing in the crowd, both Lin Sha and Fang Hua showed no fear on their faces.
Fang Hua merely watched Du Youqian calmly, the sharp Sword Qi in her eyes replaced by boundless, tender affection.
Lin Sha, on the other hand, refused to even look at Du Youqian, acting as if they were strangers.
’She had already made her decision. If Shi Shentong called her name, she would absolutely not put Du Youqian in a difficult position.’
’Facing death with resolve wasn’t so difficult. Watching the person she loved most die—that was the greatest pain she had ever endured in her life.’
Shi Shentong slowly spoke. "Master Li Shan."
A slender, elegant Cultivator stepped forward, his face ashen.
"Jun Ru Master."
A beautiful, full-figured Kun Cultivator glanced around in a daze. When she saw all eyes on her, she gave a bitter smile after a moment and said with resignation, "So be it. So be it."
Shi Shentong turned his head slightly, about to speak again.
"Elder Shi," Du Youqian cut in.
He had spoken up because he’d noticed Shi Shentong’s gaze had already landed on Lin Sha.
’If he waited for Shi Shentong to say the name "Master Qingqiu," it would be too late.’
’Unless he was prepared to fight Shi Shentong right here and now, the Elder would never change his decision.’
’Once a name was changed, what about the others who had already been chosen? Could anyone’s selection be overturned?’
’On what grounds?’
’Does Master You De think his reputation carries more weight?’
’So Master You De has friends, family, and Dao Companions, but the rest of us don’t?’
That was why Du Youqian had to cut in before Shi Shentong could speak.
Shi Shentong turned to look at him. "Elder Yu, what is it?"
Du Youqian already had a plan prepared. He smiled and asked, "I just wanted to ask the Supreme Elder... the ones to be sacrificed have more or less been chosen. But what about the one who will wield the sword? The person who delivers that strike will undoubtedly have all of their Essence Blood drained as well."
In fact, Shi Shentong had just intentionally avoided clarifying one point.
The ten disciples from the Holy Blood and Taihe Sects chosen for the sacrifice, while having their Essence Blood drained, would not die on the spot. They would merely become Living Dead, unable to replenish their blood and with their remaining lifespans severely shortened.
A Living Dead could not speak or move, though a rare few with powerful Divine Sense could occasionally extend it to communicate.
But everything becomes a problem when you start making comparisons.
If the other sects found out that the Core Formation Masters sacrificed by the Holy Blood and Taihe Sects didn’t even have to truly die, they would certainly feel it was unfair.
Shi Shentong didn’t know what Du Youqian was getting at. He appeared to be pondering the question, but he was actually communicating with Du Youqian via Divine Sense. "Master You De, what do you want?"
"I want to save Master Qingqiu and Hundred Refinement Master."
Shi Shentong sent back via Divine Sense: "That’s impossible. We can consider Master Qingqiu, but not Hundred Refinement Master. Not unless someone volunteers to take his place."
Du Youqian: "I’ll take his place. I will be the one to wield the sword!"
"I had originally decided to have Hai Feng Master wield the sword. Have you thought this through? Don’t regret it. Once your Essence Blood is drained and you become a Living Dead, there’s no way to replenish it. You’ll just be waiting to die. You have a bright future—you might even reach the Golden Core Late Stage. Don’t throw it all away!" Shi Shentong’s expression turned cold and impassive.
Hai Feng Master was a Core Formation True Inheritor from Pang Master’s generation, but after reaching the Core Formation realm, his Cultivation seemed to have stagnated. He wasn’t like Pang Master, who remained one of the most powerful combatants among the Core Formation Masters.
Du Youqian looked at Lin Sha and continued his Divine Sense transmission: "I’ve made up my mind."
Shi Shentong nodded slowly and spoke aloud. "Since Yu Master has raised this question, I presume you have someone to recommend."
Du Youqian declared resolutely, "If someone must make a sacrifice, then why can’t it be me? Let me be the one to wield the sword!"
At his words, many people stared at him in astonishment.
Fang Hua’s beautiful eyes filled with shock, but Lin Sha spoke up directly. "No! You can’t wield the sword! What kind of hero are you trying to be? You just reached Core Formation! You still have hundreds of years to live! Let one of the Masters nearing the end of their lifespan do it!"
Du Youqian feigned astonishment. "Master Qingqiu, why are you trying to stop me? I don’t believe we’re familiar enough for you to do so. Someone, gag her. All this chattering is getting on my nerves."
"You!" Lin Sha was so furious she could barely speak.
Before she could say another word, a Foundation Establishment Body Cultivator came over and gagged her.
"Mmph! Mmph!" Lin Sha was so angry she wanted to cry.
’Just moments ago, she had deliberately pretended they were strangers, refusing to even look at him. She’d thought that if she was chosen for the sacrifice, she couldn’t drag him down with her, couldn’t interfere with his path on the Dao.’
’But this idiot!’
’This absolute idiot!’
’Why does he have so little regard for his own life?!’
’Can’t you just focus on living?!’
She struggled violently, giving no thought to whatever punishment she might receive.
Suddenly, a tremor ran through her, and she stopped.
It was a message from Du Youqian, sent via Divine Sense: "If I don’t wield the sword, you will die. Don’t worry. The wielder’s Essence Blood will be drained, but they won’t die. I’m sure of it."
Lin Sha’s dark, plum-like eyes stared at Du Youqian. She had stopped struggling, but her gaze was still filled with anguish.
Luo Jinyu and Fang Hua also pleaded, "Senior Brother, please, reconsider!"
Du Youqian smiled. "There’s nothing to reconsider. It’s settled."
Just then, Chen Master of the Holy Blood Sect, who had been silent until now, spoke up. "A young Core Formation Master... should be sacrificed later. Even if you’re going to slaughter a pig, you ought to fatten it up first. Hundred Refinement Master, step down. I will take your place."
’I wonder if this Core Formation Master, whose divinations were always wrong, managed to foresee this particular fate for himself today?’
Du Youqian had long known that Chen Master was one of the men in Elder Shi’s pocket.
’He just wondered what price Elder Shi had paid to convince Chen Master to willingly become a Living Dead.’
Luo Jinyu voiced his thanks to Chen Master.
But he knew it was Du Youqian who had fought for and won him this reprieve.
’Du Youqian must have made some kind of deal with Elder Shi in private.’
Shi Shentong nodded. "Very well. Then..."
He turned back to the group of Masters from the other sects. "Yu Ming Master. You are the last one."
Yu Ming Master of the Chongzhen Sect shook his head with a bitter smile but didn’t refuse. He simply handed his Water Yu Sword to Master Wu Ji of the Taihe Sect. "Elder Wu Ji, please return this sword to my Sect."
Master Wu Ji replied solemnly, "I will not fail this trust."
And so, the ten people for the sacrifice, the ten people for the offering, and the person who would wield the sword had all been chosen.
"Now then," Shi Shentong commanded, "we must pay close attention to the movements of that Unparalleled Great Demon, and... awaken Elder Blood Slaughter, so we are ready to deliver that strike at a moment’s notice."
He then used his Divine Sense to inform Du Youqian of what to do next.
"Everyone who is not involved, leave this place," Du Youqian said in a cold voice.
The Cultivators who had not been chosen exchanged glances before silently filing out of the small hall.
Lin Sha did not want to leave and had to be forcibly escorted out.
Fang Hua and Luo Jinyu didn’t want to leave either, but Du Youqian rebuked them. "We are facing a crisis; this is no time for sentimental attachments. Go! We can talk about whatever you have to say after we’ve defeated this great enemy."
Once everyone not involved had left, the only ones remaining were those who had been chosen for the sacrifice, the Body Refining Cultivators, and the True Inheritance Core Formation Masters from the Holy Blood and Taihe Sects.
Du Youqian, Elder Shi, and all the True Inheritance Core Formation Masters of the Holy Blood and Taihe Sects bowed toward the seemingly ordinary wall behind Elder Shi’s seat. "We respectfully invite Elder Blood Slaughter to appear!"
They repeated the plea three times.
A middle-aged man in a blood-red robe embroidered with archaic patterns emerged from the wall like a phantom.
His long, blood-tinged hair fell to his waist, his short beard glowed faintly red, and his eyes were the color of crimson blood.
"For what purpose have you awakened me?"
His voice had a sharp, metallic timbre, yet it was utterly devoid of emotion.
