At a scene littered with corpses, several Jinyiwei officers in Flying Fish Suits and at least a hundred Jinyiwei Warriors, junior officers, and Captains were bustling about.
The Warriors were busy counting and identifying the bodies, using the items on the corpses to determine the deceased’s identities, deduce the cause of death, and reconstruct the scene.
The Jinyiwei officers, on the other hand, were chatting reflectively.
"This Baili Jianxin... he’s really something else. Either everyone misjudged him in the past, and he truly possesses formidable strength, or the person backing him is extraordinary."
After Thousand Households Guan spoke, Hundred Households Hao played the sycophant. "Lord Thousand Households is right. But I think it’s more likely the person backing him is extraordinary. If he truly had such power, why would he have allowed Xianlai Castle to be massacred?"
"Not necessarily," said Cheng Qianshu of the Thousand Households Office (the Thousand Households’s deputy, roughly equivalent to a Vice Thousand Households), who had been silent until now, apparently having mulled it over for a long time. "It is said that when this Baili Jianxin was born, ten thousand swords paid him homage. He was born with a natural Sword Heart."
Hundred Households Hao didn’t dare scoff at his superior. He could laugh inwardly, but of course, he couldn’t let it show on his face.
Thousand Households Guan had no such reservations, laughing heartily. "That’s just some nonsense the Baili Family made up to glorify themselves! It’s fine for fooling ignorant peasants, but Old Cheng, you actually believe it?"
Cheng Qianshu shook his head, unafraid of offending his superior, and said clearly, "I have heard that among Immortal Masters, there are Great Powers who can be reincarnated after death. Though most will forget everything about their past lives, a rare few can, under specific circumstances, suddenly awaken some memories and regain a portion of their former power. Lord Thousand Households, don’t you think this theory is at least a possibility? Perhaps it was the tragedy at Xianlai Castle that awakened some of this Prince Baili’s past-life wisdom."
Hundred Households Hao was stunned. ’Immortal Masters?’
Ever since the Demon uprising, the existence of Immortal Masters had become known to more and more people.
Something that big was impossible to hide.
But for a Mortal like Hundred Households Hao, Immortal Masters were still far too remote.
Sometimes he even wondered, ’Do Immortal Masters really exist?’
If they did, why hadn’t any Immortal Master shown themselves in the last one or two hundred years?
He had never imagined that a case he was working on would one day involve an Immortal Master.
During the interrogation of Qing He, she couldn’t withstand the torture and said the Guo Family was backed by an Immortal Master. He hadn’t really believed it at the time, thinking the woman had been duped.
Now it seemed he had been too hasty. The Xianlai Castle case very likely did involve an Immortal Master.
Thousand Households Guan sized up Cheng Qianshu with an exaggerated expression. "Cheng Qianshu, not bad. A very bold idea. But how do you know all this about Immortal Masters? This is the first I’m hearing of how knowledgeable you are."
Cheng Qianshu merely smiled without a word. ’My ancestors served the Immortal Masters in the Imperial Palace and recorded some of their sayings to pass down through the family,’ he thought. ’Do you think I’d tell you something like that?’
"Sir, we’ve found it," a Captain reported, hurrying over.
Thousand Households Guan perked up. "Take us there."
Led by the Captain, the several Jinyiwei officers in Flying Fish Suits approached the bodies of the Guo Family Ancestor and Jiang Qian.
After a glance at the Guo Family Ancestor’s body, even Thousand Households Guan, unafraid of the blood and grime, squatted down to carefully examine Jiang Qian’s corpse.
Hundred Households Hao said from the side, "During the interrogation of the captured Guo Family Death Warriors, someone mentioned a beautiful woman of apparently high status. Even the Guo Family Ancestor was deferential to her. She would kill people at the slightest provocation, and the Guo Family Ancestor didn’t dare stop her. I think, for her to intimidate an Innate Grandmaster to that extent... could that woman have been an Immortal Master?"
Thousand Households Guan didn’t dare touch the headless corpse, only ordering the Captain to lift the nearby head. He examined it closely. "She must have been quite beautiful when she was alive."
Another officer, Thousand Households Ma, said from the side, "Decapitated by a single Sword strike. The wound is incredibly clean. That Baili Jianxin has a fast Sword! What’s strange is, judging by this Immortal Master’s posture at the time of death, she didn’t seem to struggle. It’s like she was killed in a sneak attack. Strange, very strange. And her body is shriveled, a very odd state for a corpse. It’s as if her Essence Blood was drained by something before she died."
Thousand Households Guan said, "What’s so strange about it? Maybe it wasn’t Baili Jianxin who struck, but the Immortal Master backing him. When an Immortal Master makes a move, nothing is surprising."
Hundred Households Hao was just glad that he hadn’t offended Baili Jianxin earlier.
Thousand Households Guan then ordered the Captain to search the body.
The Captain was trembling. Who knew what kind of strange, deadly things might be on the corpse of an Immortal Master?
But his luck was good; he finished searching the body without encountering any danger.
After all of Jiang Qian’s belongings were laid out on the ground, the high-ranking officers’ eyes lit up, and they divided the few Talismans among themselves.
As for Jiang Qian’s personal Magical Artifact, they didn’t dare touch it, fearing that whoever backed her would come looking for it.
Cheng Qianshu thought to himself, ’I’ve heard that more powerful Immortal Masters have miraculous Storage Treasures where they can keep all their possessions.’
They say that during the Qi Kingdom’s invasion a few hundred years ago, an Immortal Master from Qi lent a Storage Treasure to the Mortal army to transport rations. This eliminated Qi’s logistical concerns and gave the Wu Kingdom a miserable time.
’This Immortal Master seems to be one of the worst off. She didn’t even have a Storage Treasure on her.’
In truth, he couldn’t even be bothered to take one of these Talismans.
’As if his family didn’t have any.’
After another inspection of the Guo Family Ancestor’s corpse, the assembled Thousand Households and Qianshu gathered to confer.
"His Majesty ordered us to escort Prince Baili to the Capital City, but now that Immortal Masters are involved, I’m afraid there’s nothing we can do."
"Exactly," Thousand Households Ma agreed. "When Immortal Masters are involved, it’s best for the Jinyiwei not to get too deeply entangled. We should just observe and record. For now, I must ask Lord Guan to write a secret report to His Majesty and await his instructions."
Thousand Households Guan asked, "And what about the Cabinet?"
Thousand Households Ma fell silent.
Thousand Households Guan looked at him, his own thoughts unreadable, and also fell silent.
Cheng Qianshu had a good idea what they were thinking, but he didn’t want to get involved.
He just wanted to live a quiet life and get by; he didn’t have such strong ambitions.
Currently, most Jinyiwei officers at the rank of Thousand Households and above were appointed by the Cabinet, not by His Majesty.
His Majesty wanted to reclaim the authority to appoint and dismiss Jinyiwei officers of Thousand Households rank and above, and these Thousand Households and Hundred Households also wanted to get closer to His Majesty!
After all, pleasing His Majesty was much easier than pleasing the Cabinet.
After a long silence, Thousand Households Guan seemed to murmur to himself, "Most of the Nobility should be on His Majesty’s side. And this Prince Baili is, after all, from a noble house. Though he wasn’t close to the palace before and always considered himself one of the Jianghu People, that can change. Hundred Households Hao, didn’t you say before that Baili Jianxin mentioned he would go to the Capital City to thank His Majesty and inherit his title?"
Hundred Households Hao cursed inwardly.
He had embellished the report because he hadn’t wanted to relay Baili Jianxin’s insolent words.
But from Baili Jianxin’s tone, he hadn’t seemed interested in inheriting the title, nor had he said anything about personally thanking His Majesty!
But now, he could only bite the bullet and say, "Yes, Baili Jianxin did indeed say that."
Thousand Households Ma said out of the blue, "Let’s try to win him over."
Thousand Households Guan said, "Alright! I’ll send a carrier pigeon and have our men ahead reveal themselves. Whatever Baili Jianxin asks for, satisfy him immediately. We need to show our sincerity."

Meanwhile, after Du Youqian had slain the Guo Family Ancestor and Jiang Qian, he couldn’t be bothered to understand the whole story, even though he hadn’t been able to perform a Soul Search.
He would certainly avenge Xianlai Castle, but there was no rush. The dead were gone, and the living were what mattered now.
Besides, he wasn’t afraid of the trail going cold. Once he recovered his Cultivation, he could simply perform a divination to learn everything clearly.
He continued west. Before long, Jinyiwei dressed as Jianghu People appeared. Their attitude was extremely enthusiastic. Whether Du Youqian wanted to enjoy fine food, needed a carriage for travel, or wished to inquire about local customs, these Jinyiwei handled everything flawlessly and with sweet words.
That night, they even took it upon themselves to send a beautiful woman to his room.
Du Youqian, of course, refused.
Never mind whether he had such needs or not.
Given his current physical condition, a few rounds of "intense battle" with a beautiful woman would probably leave him bedridden with a chronic illness, ready to breathe his last.
Along the way, Du Youqian wasn’t in a hurry. He traveled at a leisurely pace, stopping frequently. Everywhere he went, he made sure to learn in detail about the local customs, governance, and the livelihood of the people.
He was preparing for his future role as the National Guardian Celestial Master.
The fake National Guardian Celestial Master: Performs rituals to heaven and earth, prays for rain, wards off disasters, performs the Yu Step, pretends to be mystical, deceives superiors and bullies subordinates, and acts opportunistically.
The real National Guardian Celestial Master: Controls all major military and political affairs, holds both financial and personnel authority, and stands second only to the Empress, above all others.
