The rest of the rescue didn’t take much time.
The other Core Formation Master, likely knowing they were no match for Du Youqian, fled without even putting up a fight.
The Nine Great Sects had lost some of their Foundation Establishment Disciples, but Du Youqian rescued the survivors and brought them back to the entrance of the Secret Realm.
With matters in the Secret Realm settled, Du Youqian had Jie Yu wait in a safe place while he headed for the Core Formation battlefield.
As soon as he returned to the battlefield, a sweep of Du Youqian’s Divine Sense left him speechless.
’I was gone for so long, and this is the best you can do? What a joke of a fight.’
The number of combatants was exactly the same as when he had left.
Everyone’s acting was impeccable. The battles looked world-shaking, but it was all a damn sham.
’Who is this performance even for?’
Du Youqian found Lin Sha and Meng Xiao, who had disguised their appearances and auras, and joined them in the charade, his mind racing all the while.
During his earlier interrogation of the Foundation Establishment Cultivators, they had identified the mastermind as someone calling himself the "Master of Changliu Mountain."
’For now, I’ll assume this Master of Changliu Mountain is Pang Master.’
’But why use such a strange title?’
’What is Changliu Mountain?’
’The Holy Blood Sect certainly isn’t located on any Changliu Mountain.’
Du Youqian seriously doubted whether a mountain range named "Changliu Mountain" even existed in all of Momenan.
’Also, what was Pang Master’s true motive for orchestrating today’s attack?’
’Was it merely to cripple the core forces of the Nine Great Sects?’
’But why didn’t he show his face?’
As a Golden Core Late Stage cultivator, if he had participated in this ambush, it was likely that not a single one of the nine Core Formation Masters from the Nine Great Sects would have survived.
This wasn’t an overestimation on Du Youqian’s part.
He knew because he could do it himself.
If he were to join Pang Master’s side, he alone would have no difficulty tying down four or five of the opposing Core Formation Masters.
The remaining twelve Core Formation Masters on their side could then easily use their numerical advantage to overwhelm and kill the rest in short order before coming to his aid.
Du Youqian didn’t believe Pang Master was any weaker than him in a fight.
The logic was simple: if Pang Master were truly that weak, how could he command the loyalty of so many people (even if a good number of them were turncoats)!
None of it made sense to Du Youqian.
Suddenly, an idea flashed in his mind. ’Could it be? Is there some Treasure of Heaven and Earth in this Secret Realm that Pang Master needs?’
’Was this whole large-scale attack just a smokescreen to hide his true objective and prevent anyone from deducing his current state?’
The more Du Youqian thought about it, the more plausible this seemed.
Thanks to Lin Sha and Meng Xiao’s excellent coordination, Du Youqian could continue the mock battle without a hitch while lost in thought.
The other skirmishes were much the same; with the exception of the Beautiful Daoist Wu Ai, everyone was just going through the motions.
Master Wu Ai must have shared a deep bond with Master Wu Jiu. Fueled by grief and indignation, she attacked without mercy, her swordsmanship razor-sharp.
However, her opponent was no weakling. While not exactly fighting with ease, they were at least able to maintain a flawless defense.
Fang Hua, having likely sensed something was off, was also holding back.
After a while longer, the enemy Core Formation Masters seemed to receive a signal and began an orderly retreat, covering each other’s backs.
On their side, everyone except for Master Wu Ai had no intention of giving chase and tacitly disengaged.
Master Wu Ai gave chase, but when she realized only Du Youqian had followed, she stopped. If she pushed forward recklessly, a sudden counterattack from the enemy could kill her on the spot and perhaps even endanger Du Youqian. She had no choice but to grit her teeth and halt her pursuit.
Seeing the beautiful Daoist nun’s red-rimmed eyes, Du Youqian offered his condolences. "My condolences. Fellow Daoist Wu Jiu was a magnanimous person; he certainly wouldn’t want you to be overcome with grief."
Master Wu Ai bit her lip, looking as if she were drowning in an ocean of grief. She mustered all her strength to speak. "Who are these people? Why would they do this?"
Just as Du Youqian was about to speak, alarm bells screamed in his mind. His expression remained unchanged as he instantly activated his Copper Skin Iron Bones Divine Ability.
At his current Cultivation level, he could use Copper Skin Iron Bones a maximum of three times in quick succession. He had already used it once before, making this the second time.
No sooner had he activated the Divine Ability than a streak of light erupted from the ground below. It split in two, with one beam shooting toward him and the other hurtling toward Master Wu Ai.
Master Wu Ai clearly didn’t react in time. If that attack hit her, she would be gravely injured, if not killed.
With a faint internal sigh, Du Youqian sent his Small Seal flying. It expanded rapidly in mid-air, positioning itself perfectly in front of Master Wu Ai to block the streak of light.
As for himself, he was keen to test the ambusher’s strength and confident in his Copper Skin Iron Bones. He completely ignored the light streaking toward him, instead splitting his focus to command his Jinhuan sword, slashing down into the earth.
Du Youqian’s sword strike was, without a doubt, fruitless. It must have hit a Defensive Treasure, as it simply bounced back.
The streak of light that hit him turned out to be a disposable Treasure: a Bone-Piercing Nail.
However, the vicious Treasure failed to penetrate his skin, merely inflicting a minor, superficial wound.
The Bone-Piercing Nail was undoubtedly coated with a deadly poison, but before it could even seep into his bloodstream, it was purged by his Magical Power.
For a Cultivator like Du Youqian, who had reached Core Formation through Body Refining, most of the world’s deadly poisons were merely supplements for his training. He had tempered his body with Gang Qi and Sha Qi back in the Foundation Establishment Stage—substances far more potent than any poison.
Du Youqian commanded the Jinhuan sword again, this time imbuing it with his "Slaughter" Sword Intent, which had reached the Small Success stage.
He suspected the ambusher was Pang Master, as the power behind the attack was indicative of the Golden Core Late Stage.
Therefore, he was unwilling to reveal his "Annihilate" Sword Intent. Cultivators of a certain level all knew that the "Annihilate" Sword Intent was the trademark of Yu Fei, the former True Inheritance Core Formation of the Holy Blood Sect.
"Well now, Master Baili, you truly are extraordinary." The opponent blocked his sword and a message came via Divine Sense.
"Stop the theatrics and come out for a chat." Seeing that his opponent wasn’t attacking again, Du Youqian also held back.
He wasn’t absolutely certain he could defeat his opponent, so it was better to bide his time and focus on improving his Cultivation.
’Endure him, yield to him, let him be, avoid him, bear with him, ignore him. In a hundred years, I’ll come back and cut him down.’
’If a hundred years isn’t enough, then two hundred it is.’
’Time is on my side.’
The man suspected to be Pang Master sent another Divine Sense transmission. "This is not a convenient place to talk. I will pay you a visit another day, Celestial Master. Perhaps we have a basis for cooperation."
Du Youqian merely sneered in response.
Pang Master, likely realizing he wasn’t completely confident in his ability to defeat Du Youqian, also held back and departed quietly.
Master Wu Ai returned the Small Seal to Du Youqian and gave him a Daoist salute. "Thank you for your help, Fellow Daoist. If not for you, I fear I would have been gravely injured, if not killed. If you ever need my help in the future, just say the word, and I will not hesitate."
Du Youqian smiled. "We are friends. It was a small matter, not worth mentioning. For now, let’s go and retrieve Fellow Daoist Wu Jiu’s body."
The beautiful Daoist nun’s eyes reddened again.
Du Youqian noticed she wore her heart on her sleeve—smiling when happy, crying when sad, never hiding anything. In a way, it was its own form of freedom, to face one’s emotions so honestly.
Just then, Fang Hua strolled over gracefully. Although she hadn’t joined the fight, Pang Master’s tactical retreat was likely influenced in part by her threatening presence on the sidelines.
She was a Swordsman. She had trusted Du Youqian to keep the enemy occupied while she looked for the perfect opportunity to deliver a single, fatal strike.
Unfortunately, Pang Master was more tactically astute than she had anticipated.
She communicated with Du Youqian via Divine Sense. "Our opponent is very strong. Stronger than me."
"I know," Du Youqian replied. "Even if we attacked together, there’s no guarantee we could have taken him down."
"We all need to be careful from now on. Having someone like that lurking in the shadows is a tremendous threat to all of us."
"Try not to go out alone," Du Youqian advised. "Don’t give him the chance to pick us off one by one. I used to think he had some hidden trouble that prevented him from acting openly, forcing him to bide his time. But now, it seems he may have resolved some of those issues."
As they communicated, they arrived back at the entrance to the Secret Realm, the very spot where the nine Core Formation Masters had been ambushed.
Master Wu Ai began to collect Master Wu Jiu’s body, tears streaming down her face.
Besides Master Wu Jiu, Master Luo Yan of the Lingxiao Sword Pavilion and the Forgotten World Master of the Chongzhen Sect had also fallen.
Master Luo Yan was a Kun Cultivator. It appeared she had died by detonating her Sword Pill, yet her body remained intact. Her refined and otherworldly face held no trace of violence, only a sense of peace and transcendence. She didn’t look dead, merely asleep.
Even in death, the Sword Intent lingering around her was still piercingly sharp and deeply impressive.
Du Youqian felt it was a great loss; this Core Formation Master must have been a truly enlightened expert of the Dao.
Furthermore, her Sword Intent felt strangely familiar to him.
Fang Hua whispered from the side, "Master Luo Yan was the inheritor of the Lingxiao Sword Pavilion’s Celestial Dao Sword."
Du Youqian was stunned.
’So this was the inheritor of the Celestial Dao Sword? The one who, in a few years, was supposed to wield her sword alongside him to halt the decline of Spiritual Qi in Momenan?’
