Thus far, Du Youqian had mastered three Divine Abilities.
They were "Copper Skin Iron Bones," which he had obtained from Little Wukong; "Instant Healing," which he had figured out on his own; and the space Divine Ability "Inch and Mile," which he had developed based on Xia Chuchu’s own.
Unfortunately, despite possessing an Earth Celestial Spirit Root in this life, he had never managed to comprehend an earth-elemental Divine Ability—a lingering regret.
After mastering this new Divine Ability, Du Youqian returned to the Death Channel to make another attempt.
The "Inch and Mile" Divine Ability proved to be a tremendous help. Whenever he encountered sections dense with spatial rifts or other extreme dangers, he could use it to prevent the rifts, spatial turbulence, and other hazards from even touching him.
However, Du Youqian still didn’t venture too deep this time.
Using Divine Abilities also consumed Magical Power and Divine Sense.
’If I use it all up, then even with a thousand skills at my disposal, I won’t be able to use a single one.’
Even the Spiritual Diamonds that could replenish his Magical Power had their limits.
Besides, there was no way to quickly replenish one’s Divine Sense.
He decided to wait until he broke through to Golden Core Perfection before he would risk his life to brave the Death Channel. He should have a much better chance of success then.
In this lifetime, it had taken Du Youqian just over forty years to go from the Initial Core Formation Stage to the Golden Core Middle Stage.
From the Golden Core Middle Stage to the Late Stage, it had taken him less than eighty years.
However, 150 years had now passed since he broke through to the Golden Core Late Stage, yet he still hadn’t reached Golden Core Perfection.
On one hand, this was because he had spent a great deal of time and energy over the years comprehending Divine Abilities and Sword Intent. His power had more than doubled, but this naturally meant his Cultivation progress had slowed.
On the other hand, it was because the Spiritual Qi in Momenan was in constant decline.
Previously, during his Body Refining, he hadn’t required dense Spiritual Qi, only a large amount of Human Dao Fortune. However, after he restored the complete "Profound Void Three Treasures Decision," he began to focus on advancing his Essence, Qi, and Spirit in tandem, so his need for Spiritual Qi increased once again.
The declining concentration of Spiritual Qi in Momenan was undoubtedly holding him back.
Still, Du Youqian estimated that if he dedicated himself to arduous cultivation for another few decades, he should be able to break through to Golden Core Perfection before his four-hundredth birthday.
Three Divine Abilities were enough for the time being. So, Du Youqian gradually stepped back from state affairs, stopped wandering the world in search of new insights, and dutifully returned to Soul-shaking Mountain to focus on his Cultivation.
The Beautiful Daoist Nun came for a short stay. While her official reason was to relay a message from Elder Wu Fei about the upcoming sky-worshipping ceremony, Du Youqian could tell she had simply missed him and made a special trip to see him.
She and Du Youqian still hadn’t breached the unspoken boundary between them, both maintaining a calm restraint.
One day, Du Youqian asked her, "Hasn’t Elder Wu Fei broken through to Golden Core Perfection yet?"
Master Wu Ai shook her head. "Grand-master says that with Momenan in decline and the Heaven and Earth Spiritual Qi so much weaker than it was a few hundred years ago, he feels he has no hope of breaking through to Golden Core Perfection."
Du Youqian was taken aback. "Doesn’t that mean his time is almost up?"
Master Wu Ai said, a little uncertainly, "Grand-master should still have one or two hundred years left, shouldn’t he? A Golden Core Late Stage cultivator has a Celestial Lifespan of eight hundred years, and our Sect’s Cultivation Technique is exceptionally good for extending one’s life. Besides, it wouldn’t be difficult for Grand-master to procure some Longevity Spiritual Objects. He should be able to live to be nearly nine hundred. He hasn’t even passed his seven-hundredth birthday yet."
Du Youqian fell into thought.
He had actually considered asking Master Wu Fei to brave the passage with him.
’The Taihe Sect has a successor, and Master Wu Fei isn’t one to cling to power. With his noble character and single-minded focus on the Great Dao, I should be able to persuade him to leave the Taihe Sect behind and venture into the outside world to seek a breakthrough.’
’But what if Master Wu Fei refuses?’
’And it’s not like I can just kill Master Wu Fei.’
It wasn’t a matter of strength. Du Youqian simply wasn’t a bloodthirsty man, and he was unwilling to kill someone as genuinely good as Master Wu Fei—a rarity in the Cultivation Realm.
’But the existence of the passage cannot be revealed.’
So, Du Youqian was uncertain.
There was a potential solution, however. He could have Master Wu Fei swear an oath on his soul not to reveal the matter, and only then tell him.
He hadn’t been in a rush, planning to wait until Master Wu Fei broke through to Golden Core Perfection to discuss it. But now, it seemed Master Wu Fei himself wasn’t confident he ever would.
’Perhaps I should find an opportunity to have a proper talk with Master Wu Fei.’
After spending some more time with him, the Beautiful Daoist Nun gracefully departed, and Du Youqian resumed his Cultivation.
After the next sky-worshipping ceremony, Du Youqian went directly into seclusion on Soul-shaking Mountain.
He remained in this arduous bout of cultivation until he was three hundred and sixty years old.
He didn’t emerge because he had achieved a breakthrough in his Realm, nor was there any disturbance in the Cultivation Realm.
Instead, it was because scattered cases of a strange illness had begun appearing in the Human World. The disease had a very high mortality rate and was extremely contagious—it seemed to be airborne and was being called a plague.
A situation like this naturally called for the Celestial Master to intervene and perform a ritual to pray for blessings and ward off disaster.
Du Youqian wasn’t overly concerned at first. With society at its current level of development, plagues and the resulting mass deaths were difficult to avoid.
The only way to avoid it would be for a large number of Cultivators to willingly intervene and help treat the Mortals.
But would Cultivators do that?
’They undertake arduous Cultivation, not to become nannies for Mortals...’
It was a hopeless cause.
So, Du Youqian decided to just go through the motions. He planned to tour all Nine Countries, performing a ritual to pray for blessings and ward off disaster in each one. He’d also do some public relations work—receiving a few hand-picked, afflicted Mortals and expending some Magical Power and Elixirs to cure them, all to maintain his prestigious image as the Celestial Master.
It wasn’t that he was heartless, but he had no desire to be a nanny for Mortals either.
What he could do, aside from these publicity stunts, was order the various countries to begin disaster relief efforts, disseminate texts outlining advanced principles for preventing and controlling infectious diseases, have each country’s Imperial Hospital organize the nation’s physicians to research and treat the plague, and execute a number of corrupt officials who were taking advantage of the chaos.
He couldn’t be expected to spend all day and night treating patients himself.
Even someone like Saint Mother Wu Ai Master wouldn’t do such a thing.
Du Youqian started in the Wu Kingdom, then went to the Qi Kingdom. As he was preparing to travel to the Yan Kingdom, he realized the situation had spiraled out of control.
The daily number of new patients in every country was astronomical. Mortals in some cities were falling ill and dying an entire city at a time, and many rural towns were left with no sign of life for miles around...
The horrifying scenes made Du Youqian realize this was clearly no ordinary plague. With such high transmissibility and mortality, it was many times more terrifying than smallpox!
If it wasn’t dealt with swiftly, the world’s population of four billion Mortals could be reduced to a mere tenth of its size!
Even setting aside compassion, the resulting loss of Human Dao Fortune was something Du Youqian could not accept.
Besides, he didn’t have a heart of stone.
Du Youqian immediately put a stop to his charade. He organized a massive sky-worshipping ceremony and called upon the Beautiful Daoist Nun to help him perform a ritual that, while appearing perfunctory on the surface, was actually intended to regulate the world’s Yin and Yang and soothe its Earth Veins.
But the situation remained grim; the plague’s spread did not slow.
Throngs of panicked, fleeing Mortals carried the plague to every corner of the world.
Faced with such a dire crisis, Du Youqian could think of only one solution: ask the Taihe Sect to step forward and organize the other Major Sects for disaster relief. Regular Cultivators would be dispatched to contain the sick, establish quarantine zones, and restrict travel. Meanwhile, Cultivators skilled in Alchemy would collaborate on developing an Elixir to cure the plague, focusing on using common, easily cultivated herbs.
As for the Holy Blood Sect... a massive plague was a cause for celebration for the Demon Sect Camp. They could harvest vast numbers of living souls and Essence Blood for refining Demon Artifacts without even having to foment a war. They were undoubtedly ecstatic.
Thus, Du Youqian could only place his hopes in the Profound Sects Orthodox Camp.
But Master Wu Fei refused without the slightest hesitation.
"The Immortal Sects should not meddle in mortal affairs. This plague is a failing of the Human Dao; the Immortal Sects are powerless to intervene."
Master Wu Ai said expressionlessly, "Those were Grand-master’s exact words."
Du Youqian looked down in thought for a moment. "And you? What do you think?"
Master Wu Ai replied, "I will follow all of your arrangements, Fellow Daoist. To save the people of this world, I will shrink from no sacrifice."
Du Youqian could hear the unshakeable resolve in her voice.
The Beautiful Daoist Nun was slightly older than he was in this life, approaching her four-hundredth birthday. She, too, was stuck at the Golden Core Middle Stage, unable to break through to the Late Stage.
If she couldn’t achieve a breakthrough, her life would come to its appointed end in another two hundred years.
Du Youqian very much wanted to help her.
But he had no good reason to.
However, if she contributed a great deal to the fight against the plague, it would be perfectly justifiable for him to later offer to preserve her soul, personally see her off to reincarnate in the Human World, and then Guide her back to the Dao.
As for who she might have been in her past life... it was no longer important.
Du Youqian had no desire to investigate it further.
What if she was Long Ruzhen? And what if she wasn’t?
Du Youqian threw himself into researching the plague.
But with no knowledge of modern medicine, he was reduced to treating the symptoms rather than the cause, searching for palliative herbs to try and refine into an Elixir.
As for the underlying cause of the illness, its means of transmission, how it replicated... he had no way of researching any of it.
The efficiency of a single person’s research was terribly low.
But soon, Master Wu Fei sent a messenger to say he agreed with Du Youqian’s proposal. He was prepared to call upon all the Profound Sects of the orthodox camp to join the campaign Du Youqian had initiated to save the Mortal world.
As for the reason...
"I hear the Mortals in the Blessed Lands are also starting to die in large numbers," the Beautiful Daoist Nun quietly told Du Youqian. "None of the Sects can sit still any longer."
