The Goblin Knight's roar still echoed through the chamber when it came charging toward us. The creature was enormous. Ten feet tall, perhaps more, with thick muscles bulging beneath its iron armor. Its shield looked large enough to serve as a door, while the flamberge in its opposite hand was almost as tall as Sara herself, and might even be twice as sharp. ;)
I raised my sword just in time. CLANG! The impact rattled my entire body, my boots slid backward across the stone floor, leaving two faint trails in the dust as i was pushed back from the hits recoil.
"Master!"
"I'm fine!" I barely got the words out before the Goblin Knight swung again, this time I ducked, not willing to try going toe-to-toe with its strength once again. The massive blade passed over my head with enough force that the wind generated by it tugged at my cloak.
I tried to counter it immediately, but my sword struck the creature's exposed knee.
CLANG!
and the blade bounced up unable to puncture its way through.
"What?!"
Goblin armor is supposed to be the crappiest of all the crap armor, and yet... this knight, has real proper iron armor able to resist a strong blow like i'd just tried to specially deliver to it.
The Goblin Knight recovered almost instantly and slammed its shield toward me, going for a good old fashion shieldbash. I jumped backward, the shield missed my chest by inches.
At the same time, Sara's voice rang through the chamber. "Fireball!"
A massive sphere of flame shot past my shoulder, singeing some strand of my hair on its path towards the goblin still charging towards me.
The firey ball of death slammed itself into the chestplate of the goblin knight. BOOM! Causing flames to erupt across the chamber, creating a limited sea of flames.
The monster staggered from the hit, its chestplate now glowing a dangerously hot orange, but it was still standing.
"That barely hurt it!" Sara sounded shockedhaving assumed her high powered fireball could KO the big brute if she scored a direct hit.
The Goblin Knight roared again, this time in pain, as it hastily stripped off the molten hot armor, and exposed its bare chest for all the world to see.
Then it kicked off the ground and charged towards Sara, having switched its primary target and source of aggro from me to her.
My heart jumped into my throat. "Run!"
Sara didnt even stop to think she just obeyed, dropping her staff slightly and sprinted across the room while the monster pursued her, trying her utmost to run faster than the beast.
Meanwhile with its focus drawn, i quickly activated my top skills and slipped into the shadows disappearing like a figment of everyones imaginations.
Soft and Quick as shadows i was, overtaking the beast and coming to rest between the still fleeing Sara and the still charging Goblin.
Taking my short sword and positioning it in front of me like i was the pole of a spear, before kicking off the ground with all my might, sending myself shooting through the air like a loosed arrow.
SHING!
The mathematics of battle were finally determined and its velocity when meeting my blade, travelling at my own reverse velocity, time the sharpness of my blade, divided by the hardness of its hide, multiplied by the power of my assassination skill.
The resultant scene was a goblin with a canonball sized whole right through its chest cavity, i mean you could see clean through his body, but at the same time 'ouch' that big oaf may have taken off his chest armor but the backplate was still there, so when my explosive blow shot me through him, i crashed right into the wall of iron on his back, the only thing saving me from that car collision was the fact that the leather binding holding the plate to its body wasnt strong enough to absorb all the force.
This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.
As the goblin knight was teetering taking its last few ghostly steps forwards not even realizing it was already dead, i was busy sledding my way across the boss room throwing up sparks on the stone, as my own head was in my hands rubbing away at the impact sight, tears welling up in my eyes.
THUD.
The sound of a body falling to the ground echo'd throughout the boss room, but the oppresive aura that lingered was quickly cleared away as if someone finally opened a window in a stuffy room. Even the torches that were spread on the walls seemed to burn brighter and give more light for us to see the room for what it was.
Silence descended, as Sara stared. First at the downed goblin which was starting to disolve into the floor, then to me, and back again. Tears welling up in her own eyes as she had no doubt seen her life flash before her eyes from that near death experience, while i myself was still sitting in my would be sled, silently making a vow to acquire healing magic to make the goose-egg sprouting on my noggin go away.
We had managed to win the fight and at the same time found the current limitations of our status builds.
I was currently only useful in a sneak attack fashion, to the point of being overpowered when it came to assassinations, Sara on the otherhand was like a glass cannon, able to dish out massive attacks but would fall apart from one hit if the enemy got to her.
We didn't immediately continue.
The fifth floor once the battle was over turned into a save zone, the first one since Floor 0, where no monsters would appear, instinct told me that even the Goblin knight itself would not reappear until after we had left, be it going back up or heading deeper down.
After confirming it was safe we setup a simple camp near the door that would head down, Sara lit a simple fire to give us a bit of a celebration to eat hot food after such a tough fight rather than just knawing on some jerky for a post battle meal.
It felt strange. Camping inside a dungeon. But hey, that man's stories always said adventurers practically lived in dungeons so who was i to question it.
The other advantage of taking a break here besides resting was, getting the chance to take a look at our status's and make any adjustments before we continued to dive deeper into the dungeons depths.
Sara ate quietly as she watched me, while i on the otherhand probably looked like i had zoned out staring off into space.
From that fight i gained three levels reaching Level 36, while Sara had gained more reaching level 28.
Giving me a total of 9 points i still had banked to be used, while Sara now had 8 for her own use.
This battle had gone to show me that against larger opponents i was out of my depth unless i could use my specialty against them, but even then i'd need to wait for an openning before i could strike the whole time Sara would be in danger.
As much as i wanted to further boost my specialty i instead boosted my Strength by 2 points, followed by maxing my Sword skill to the cap of 5.
The placement of which opened a new skill under Sword mastery, called Sword Saint, but even as my finger hovered over it to claim the skill to further enhance my power, instinct was ringing all sorts of alarm bells in my head, and thanks to that i resisted and closed out of my status.
Simply being fine with the boost to my own strength and musclular body.
Next for Sara, her own status was much more open for me to make some artistic choices. First of which was to max out her elemental affinity for 3 points, then another 3 points to max Fire magic.
Better to kill her opponent in one hit than piss them off because you struck the hard, but not hard enough to do them in.
Once her skills were raised just like my own, a new form of magic appeared as an option on her board, Inferno magic the next tier of Fire magic i suppose, but she was already dangerous enough with fire magic, and maxed out affinity.
I'll save granting her the power to destroy whole cities with a wave of her wand, for another day, specifically a day when i'm not expected to stand on the frontline in the target zone of the spells she was lobbing over my head.
Having decided that i had done enough while leaving both of us a bit of wiggle room to grow further in a pinch as needed.
Which then gave me the opportunity to turn my head away and focus on the other elephant int he room.
The second mural.
Was quite a bit different from the first one, in the first mural we had seen the ruler or leader was sad looking over his city as it was under attack by enemies, be they monsters or an enemy nations troops. But then there was this mural, where the city was still in flames below where the leader stood on what I assume was the palace steps, but rather than having the people within the city fleeing the invaders, they were instead running away from the man who was just standing there.
He didnt look like a monster but, he still given how everyone was fleeing him it was clear this man had done something, and probably something really bad to his nation, city, or people to result in their fleeing him as if he was the demon lord personified.
After she caught me staring at the wall for a bit, Sara made me tell her the story, but getting rebuffed a bit as she demanded like a little girl that i start the story from the beginning, only i could only interpret and i wasnt sure which mural came first, the one where the man was overlooking destruction all sad, or the one where his people were fleeing from him in panic.
Even so i told her what i understood of the murals, and wrapped the story up with yet another cliff hanger as not even i knew how this story ended, or what the purpose was in showing this story to us as we were diving through a dungeon.
