Carter woke up with a bit of a cold sweat, it had been quite a while since he'd last dreamed of that man, of that strange otherworld with building so tall you couldnt see the tops sometimes, while metal monsters roamed the streets often times having already consumed humans, and everyone else just treated it like it was normal.

The man was younger than he'd ever seen him before in this dream, and unlike the others which focused on the man reading or writing something, while this time it was different, he wasnt at home or work, instead he was in a building full of other people.

And from it looks like he was courting or trying to court a girl, but in the end he was unsuccessful.

Seeing him fail for the first time was pretty shocking, i had been dreaming about him for years and yet this was the first time i had seen him be down, or even sad for that matter.

That lady was indeed beautiful but having seen the man himself he was trying for more than he deserved and it seemed like he knew it too.

looking at the window, he quickly shot up to his feet and getting dressed in a rush, normally he rose as soon as he woke up, but today he'd lay there staring up at the ceiling sorting out the thoughts in his head about the dream he'd had the night before.

Only he'd spent to long analyzing it, and the sun wasnt waiting around for him, if he wanted to keep his schedule and continue collecting information on his sibling the morning market was the greatest place to do so.

But the journey was distrupted partway there, his feet coming to a halt, while his breathing which was even, became heavy and hard.

The reason for this was something he was being forced to witness off in the distance, a squad of knight dressed up in full armor was standing outside of a quaint little inn of better quality than the inn he himself was staying at.

That in itself wasnt all to strange but was was off, was the fact that even from this distance he could make our Cole... cole his orphan brother, and yet now.

Here he was wearing the armour of a knight, all the while his blade was run through a Man who was crying arms outstretched reaching out for a young lady being held in place by the other knights even as she struggled to get free.

That was when i remembered the rumor id heard days before, i remembered how Cole had demanded a girl as his slave.

But I had assumed the Baron intervening would stop him, and put his actions to rest, apparently, I had been wrong.

If anything he had reinforced the behaviour as not a few days after being chased off by the Count's own knights here he was, doing the same thing again... no not just the same thing, a worse thing.

He had stabbed the man, and watching as the blade was extracted, as the old man crumpled to the ground, the fight having left him.

Cole and his fellow knights just left, dragging the crying and screaming girl away as they did, leaving the man in a growing puddle of blood as his life force seeped away.

But the most disturbing part for me? It was the girl, when they turned to leave i got my first real look at her face, and that was what was shocking... it was her, the girl in the dream with the man.

The girl who had turned the man down, but that was a dream, that was his world, why was she here now?

I was already moving, not towards the girl, not even towards Cole. Instead i was being pulled by some other force heading for the man who was mere moments away from passing on from this world.

Likely this would be the end for him, after that display even if he had the money to afford resurrection magic from a priest, the Baron or even just his knights would block that from happening.

When i arrived in front of his inn, the innkeeper was on the ground blood spread beneath him.

"Pl-!"

The man tried with the last of his strength to call out to me, but i just knelt down, raising a hand to stop him from speaking.

Quickly going through my options in my head.

Option 1, i could use my remaining stat points to acquire some magic and attempt to cast healing magic to save the man.

Option 2, i could use the mans own stat board to try and prolong his life if not outright save him.

My own board had only five spare points, was that going to be enough... most likely not.

But looking at the man on the ground and focusing, i was able to pull up his own status board;

Cooking 3/10

It seems Walter was pretty talented in some areas mainly geared towards none combat and the short sword was probably just skills he earned wielding his chef knife in the kitchen.

But thanks to his age and lack of training i guess? He had a healthy store of spare stat points that could be used.

The biggest question left would be, should i use them?

Giving a point here or there to the villagers never seemed to cause any problem except for the militia members who headed off to become soldiers after their combat skills increased.

But for the farmers? Nothing much changed other than becoming better at their jobs, so if i used some points to increase his own ability to survive this otherwise fatal wound, could i really be blamed, or need to worry about him going out of control as a result?

Probably not, and at the same time i didnt have much more time left to make a desicion so lets roll the dice and worry about things later.

Natural Recovery 1/20 -> 5/20

Quickly using up four points to increase his natural recovery, and while there was some color returning to his face the blood pouring out from his chest only lessened ever so slightly.

Natural Recovery 5/20 -> 10/20

So i doubled down and invested another 5 points, and it was almost an instant reaction, the bleeding stopped, and even scars on the mans hands started to just fade away disappearing before my very eyes.

Breathing out a sigh of relief at the fact that the plan had worked and the man had been saved, though if not for me Cole would be a murder right now, if he wasnt already.

And it was in this moment i understood something, Cole had crossed the line, there had been mistakes, arrogance, even stupidity, but to take thing this far... to actually commit something as atrocious as murder just because he liked a girl with a pretty face and couldnt pull her with his own lack of charm.

As my thoughts about my former friend and brother continued to spiral the man at my feet groaned and his eyes finally started to flutter open, but just then a horn sounded out from further down the street, and several armour knights came charging through the little bit of a crowd that had formed to watch both the abduction and murder, followed by my own attempts at saving the man even though it would look like i did nothing much more than simply apply pressure to his wound while getting coated in his blood.

there were all kinds of people watching, merchants, laborers, even some guards, and children... but when that horn sounded and the new batch of knights charged through the crowd... they quickly parted to make way, and much of the crowd also dispersed leaving the scene in fear of a second round of violence breaking out.

And now i had a new mess to deal with, Cole left behind a bloody scene and yet from the knights now spreading out and securing the scene all glaring towards me as if i was the one who stabbed this poor guy who was still laying on the ground moaning and groaning only just starting to come too from his near death experience.
