I Can See Evolution Paths

Chapter 239: Water Mirror Trial (Part 2)

Arthur studied the frozen version of himself. While it studied him back.

He stepped to the side, and it mirrored the movement exactly. He stopped. It stopped. He raised a hand. It raised the spear.

His expression shifted slowly as it clicked. This wasn’t just shaped like him. It was responding to him.

"You copied Dusk too?" he asked.

The copy said nothing.

He scratched his cheek. "That’s a little creepy."

It disappeared without warning, and his eyes widened right before it reappeared directly in front of him. Clang. Dusk collided with the icy spear, driving him backward, boots scraping across the white surface. He recovered fast and thrust. Blocked. He swung. Parried. He changed the angle, and it changed right alongside him.

He tried a familiar combination, thrust, sweep, follow-up strike, and it answered every single one.

He jumped back and studied it. "...You’re using my fighting style."

It raised Dusk again in response.

He grinned, tightening his grip. "Fine. Let’s see how well you know it." He charged, golden light erupting from the mark as the Guardian spirit flared to life behind him. [Guardian Strike], Dusk thrust forward, the attack launched.

Something went wrong immediately. The golden shockwave bent sideways mid-flight and crashed harmlessly into the white space.

Silence.

"...What?"

The copy attacked while he was still staring, and he barely blocked in time, force sending him skidding backward.

"You changed it," he said. No response. His eyes narrowed.

He tried defending instead, Guardian Shield forming a golden dome around him, and for a moment he relaxed. The copy thrust against the barrier, and it held. Then the surface started rippling, the structure distorting, a crack spreading across the golden light. Another crack. The whole shield collapsed, and he jumped clear as fragments scattered around him.

"Okay." He looked at his own hand. "That’s not normal."

The copy advanced. This wasn’t random failure, he realized, the Mirror was actively rewriting the rules around his abilities. He didn’t panic, just started testing instead, throwing a small Magic Burst that the copy dodged, then another that curved off course before it even landed. Same result from a different angle. He nodded slowly and tried Guardian Conceal next, his body vanishing entirely, the white space going still around the motionless copy.

He smiled. "Got you." He moved silently, closing in, but the copy turned on its own and thrust straight into the empty space he’d just left, forcing him to reappear and roll clear at the last second.

"...You can see me." He stood, smile returning. "That’s interesting."

He tried relying on the weapon itself next, gripping Dusk tight and swinging, but it suddenly grew impossibly heavy, arms dropping under the weight, eyes widening. "What the—" He tried lifting it again, and the weight only climbed, the spear that always felt natural in his hands now closer to a stone pillar. The copy attacked, and he barely raised Dusk in time, clang, the impact driving him to one knee, pressure building until he had no choice but to let go. Dusk hit the floor. Thoom.

"You’re changing the weapon too," he said, standing back up as it stepped toward him. Then he laughed. "So that’s the game."

He tried Evolution Path Vision on it next, expecting the usual flood of information. Instead it flickered, fragments appearing and vanishing, symbols incomplete or outright contradicting each other. His expression sobered. He tried again. Nothing but broken pieces, gone before he could read them.

"Even this?"

The copy attacked, and he barely dodged, rolling across the floor and back onto his feet, looking from it to the empty space surrounding it. This wasn’t just an opponent attacking him. The whole trial was reacting to him.

He pointed at it. "You’re changing the rules."

Nothing happened for a moment. The white space went completely still. Then golden-blue words appeared.

[Adapt.]

He stared at the message. Simple, but it confirmed everything, the Mirror wasn’t denying what he’d said. It was answering him.

He smiled slowly. "You’re actually listening." He picked Dusk back up, but this time without a single ability behind it, no Guardian Strike, no Shield, no Conceal, no Evolution Path Vision, nothing but the spear itself.

He attacked. Blocked. Changed angle. Adjusted. Feinted. Responded. Changed footwork. Followed.

The fight turned purely physical, tactical, Arthur deliberately breaking the patterns the copy had already learned, shifting his timing, attacking from strange angles, leaving openings just to bait it into the wrong response. For a few moments he actually started gaining ground.

Right as he found his footing, the environment shifted again, the white space turning to water, his body immediately heavier while the copy moved through it like it belonged there. He pulled on the aquatic trait from the last trial and started catching up, until the water thickened further and slowed him down all over again, the copy adjusting instantly.

He blocked an attack that sent him spinning through the water, stabilizing himself with narrowed eyes. "You’re not just copying me." Another clash. "You’re watching what I do." One more. "Then changing the trial around it."

He finally understood the real mechanism. This wasn’t a fixed script. It was responding to him in real time, and every method he tried, it countered in turn, each one failing in a way that showed him the pattern of what he’d already tried too many times.

He got hit hard enough to crash across the space and stay down a moment before pushing himself back up, wiping blood off his lip while the copy waited.

He looked at it and laughed quietly. "You’re annoying." It raised Dusk. He raised his own. The fight began again, except this time he wasn’t hunting for the right ability anymore. He was hunting for a different way to think entirely, testing movement, timing, positioning, the environment itself, even the copy’s own attacks, deliberately letting some fail just to see what the Mirror did in response. Every failure handed him something new.

Eventually he stopped. The copy stood across from him, water shifting slowly around their feet, his breathing heavy, his spear damaged, his abilities unreliable. But his expression had gone calm.

He looked around the white space, at the copy, at the water, and remembered the words from the very beginning.

[You have adapted to what you know.]

[Now adapt to what you do not.]

It finally landed completely. He wasn’t meant to find the ability that beat this. He wasn’t meant to uncover some hidden weakness. The entire point was making him stop leaning on what he already knew.

He lowered Dusk slightly. "You’re not testing whether I can win."

The water shifted around him. The copy stayed still. Golden-blue words appeared.

[Continue.]

He smiled. "You’re testing whether I can change."

Instead of launching another attack, he did something else entirely, looking down at Dusk and throwing it aside. The icy spear landed several meters off, and the copy’s gaze followed it.

He raised his empty hands. "If you’re copying me..." A smile. "...then let’s see what happens when I stop fighting like myself."

The copy hesitated, barely, but he caught it.

It charged. He charged too, except this time without a single familiar technique, rhythm broken, pattern discarded entirely. The copy expected the usual attack and got nothing like it. It thrust. He moved aside, the spear passing beside him, and grabbed its wrist.

For the first time, the ice copy hesitated for real.

He smiled. "Got you."

A crack spread through the white space, not an ordinary one, something closer to reality itself splitting open. He looked toward it, and the Mirror answered.

[Adaptation recognized.]

His eyes widened slightly. Then another line.

[Trial Phase Two beginning.]

His smile vanished. "...Phase Two?"

Before he could say anything else, the white space collapsed entirely, the water gone, the copy gone, the world dropping into darkness.
