The eight Beasts charged, and the plaza exploded beneath them. Stone shattered as the Duneveil Stalker surged forward, its six legs moving so quickly that its enormous body seemed to glide over the ground. Golden dust poured from the plates along its back, spreading outward until the Beast’s silhouette began to disappear.
Arthur’s eyes sharpened. He could barely see it.
Then his body moved, stepping sideways as a claw tore through the space where his head had been.
BOOM!
The claw smashed into the stone behind him. He spun, thrusting Dusk toward the creature’s exposed side, but the Stalker vanished into the golden haze.
"Behind you!" Mithra’s warning came at the same instant he felt the distortion. He ducked as a second claw swept over him, driving his spear backward into hide. The Stalker recoiled.
His fingers had barely touched its body when his Evolution Path Vision flashed.
[Species: Duneveil Stalker]
Fragments of its traits flowed through his perception, and he understood. His body shifted, stance lowering, legs tightening as he borrowed the creature’s natural adaptation. The next time the Stalker disappeared, he moved with it, sliding across the stone rather than running, changing direction with almost no loss of momentum.
Mithra noticed. "You’re moving differently."
He didn’t answer. The Stalker emerged, and he was already there, his spear slamming into its side.
[King Aura]
[Magic Burst]
The Beast’s body flew sideways and crashed through a stone pillar.
Before it could recover, Mithra appeared above it, golden hair whipping behind her as Kusa flashed, one cut, then another, then five more, the Stalker twisting violently, claws tearing through the air, but she slipped between every attack.
Arthur came from the opposite side. The Stalker opened its mouth and golden dust erupted.
[Guardian Conceal]
The Beast snapped at empty air while Mithra drove her sword into its shoulder. He reappeared beneath its body, Dusk punching upward.
[Armor Piercing]
The golden shockwave ripped through its plated hide. The Stalker screamed. He twisted his spear, and it collapsed, its massive body hitting the ground hard enough to shake the plaza.
Arthur landed beside it. The creature didn’t move.

He looked toward the other seven. They had barely noticed the death.
The Petalback Burrower came next, slamming all six legs into the ground, and the plaza erupted, roots and vines bursting through cracks in the stone, wrapping around pillars and statues before whipping toward him. He jumped, a vine passing beneath his feet, another coming from behind, twisting in the air to let it miss.
Then the Burrower itself crashed through the stone wall. He crossed his arms.
[Guardian Shield]
A golden dome formed around him just as the enormous Beast smashed into it, the barrier shaking, his boots carving two trenches through the stone as he slid backward. The Burrower pulled away, and he released the barrier and charged.
The Beast opened the layered plates covering its back. He jumped onto them, and they snapped shut.
Mithra’s expression changed. "Arthur!"
The shell compressed. For a moment nothing happened. Then golden light leaked through the gaps, and he forced himself between the plates and tore his way out, landing on the creature’s back, his skin already hardened, the Petalback’s physical traits already being reproduced through his Evolution Path Vision.
He smiled. "That works too."
The Burrower bucked, and he nearly fell, driving Dusk into the shell to hold on. Mithra rushed beneath it, cutting into the exposed joints, and it roared and slammed its body sideways, forcing her to vanish. The creature turned toward where she’d been, and he jumped, landing directly in front of its face as it lunged.
He planted his feet.
[King Aura]
He caught the upper jaw, the force driving his feet through the stone. "You’re strong," he grinned, holding against its jaws before pulling and striking.
[Magic Burst]
The explosion blew it backward, and Mithra appeared above it, Kusa descending onto the damaged shell right as he followed with a final thrust.
[Armor Piercing]
Dusk pierced through the cracked plates. The Petalback Burrower collapsed.

Vedas suddenly drove his spear through the ground, a golden shockwave tearing across the plaza. The Glasswhisker Hound had been moving toward Arthur. It stopped, four legs digging into the stone, then vanished.
Vedas turned. The Hound appeared behind him, jaws closing around his shoulder.
CLANG!
His golden armor held. He grabbed the creature by the throat, but it twisted, its body becoming almost impossible to follow, and slipped from his grip. He swung. Nothing. The Beast reappeared twenty meters away.
Arthur watched carefully. The Hound wasn’t simply fast. Its body kept constantly changing its approach, and his gaze followed the thin sensory tendrils around its mouth.
"Vedas." The Goblin King glanced over. "Don’t chase it."
He understood. The Hound vanished again, and Vedas stood still. It appeared to his left. He didn’t move. It disappeared. Then appeared behind him, and he turned at the last moment, his fist smashing into its face.
BOOM!
The Hound flew. Vedas pursued, but it recovered in midair and disappeared, and he stopped. A golden spear suddenly flew through the empty space, and the Hound reappeared directly in its path.
BOOM!
The spear struck its side and drove it into the ground. Arthur was already there, thrusting Dusk through its exposed chest.
[Armor Piercing]
It convulsed. Mithra appeared beside him and struck its legs, and the Chief collapsed. He pulled his spear free, and the Hound’s body went still.

Vedas looked down at his hands. Golden light flowed through his armor.

His hair lifted in the energy, golden feathers multiplying around him, drifting through the air like glowing leaves.
Arthur glanced over as Vedas slowly raised his spear, the remaining Chiefs beginning to notice them. "Looks like you’re getting stronger."
He smiled beneath his helmet. "I am."
A roar shook the plaza. The Rootscale Grazer charged, its six legs smashing through the stone, enormous roots extending from its back whipping through the air. One struck the ground. Another tore through a pillar. A third slammed into the Sunplate Mauler, and the armored Beast roared and bit down on the root, ripping the tendril apart before the Grazer immediately attacked it again.
The Mauler charged, and the two Chiefs collided.
BOOM!
Arthur stepped backward as the shockwave swept across the plaza. Mithra landed beside him. "They really don’t care about us anymore."
"Not right now."
The Rootscale Grazer slammed another root into the Mauler, which dug its legs into the ground and pushed forward hard enough to shatter several statues. His expression tightened. "Move." He and Mithra separated just before another root tore between them, and the Grazer turned toward him, roots surging.
Arthur ran. One passed behind him. Another struck from the side, and he jumped over it. A third curled around his ankle, and he twisted, his body changing, legs lengthening slightly, weight shifting as he reproduced the Rootscale’s own adaptations. He landed on the root itself and ran along it as the Grazer pulled back, and he accelerated, reaching its back and driving Dusk downward.
[King Aura]
The spear struck between two layers of natural armor, and the Grazer screamed, its roots exploding outward and throwing him clear. Mithra caught his arm and swung him around the Beast before releasing him, and he flew straight toward it, spear already raised.
[Magic Burst]
The explosion slammed into its chest, staggering it, and Mithra flashed forward, Kusa striking three times before he followed with one final thrust. The Grazer collapsed.

Arthur landed. For half a second, everything was quiet. Then Vedas’s body erupted with golden light.

The pressure from the Goblin King intensified.
"Twice in one fight," Mithra said, looking over.
"Apparently," Vedas said, tightening his grip on the spear.
"Only four left," Arthur smiled.
A shadow passed over them, and he looked up to find the Starlit Sandray descending, translucent fins glowing with countless star-like markings. At the same moment, the Sunplate Mauler tore itself free from the Rootscale Grazer’s corpse.
The two Chiefs looked at one another. Then at Arthur.
Then charged.
Mithra raised Kusa. Arthur spun Dusk in his hand. The Sandray’s body illuminated the entire plaza, the Mauler’s jaws opening, and the remaining four ancient Chiefs finally turned the entire battlefield into chaos.
