"Hold your ground!"
A powerful voice broke through the chaos as a man hovering several meters above the battlefield tightened his grip around a whip made from rough, dark material. The weapon snapped through the air, striking a massive sand worm that had erupted from beneath the ground and forcing it back momentarily.
The scene below was nothing short of chaotic.
Beyond the Bamboo Mirage Forest, the dungeon transformed completely. The endless green stalks had given way to a vast expanse of dark earth, jagged rocks, and enormous mountains that stretched toward the horizon. Everything appeared weathered by countless years of rain and soot, leaving the entire landscape black and grim.
It reminded Ethan of the Black Flame Dungeon.
Yet there was something distinctly different about this place. The Black Flame Dungeon had felt like an artificial realm, a dangerous world constructed around a specific environment. This place felt more natural, complete, and ancient—it was as though the group had stepped into another world entirely.
And with that came a terrifying level of danger.
Along a flat stretch of land beside a towering mountain peak, nearly two hundred Maqaue warriors were engaged in a desperate battle. The ground beneath them constantly shifted as massive sand worms repeatedly burst from beneath the earth, their bodies twisting through the air like living serpents. Their mouths opened wide, revealing rows of jagged teeth as they attempted to swallow entire groups of warriors at once.
"Watch the ground!"
"Behind you!"
"Move!"
"Hold the formation!"
The Maqaue warriors fought desperately. They had already been inside the Bamboo Mirage Dungeon for nearly twelve days—twelve days of continuous fighting, surviving, and watching their numbers slowly decrease.
Over one hundred casualties had already been recorded. Even for a high-risk dungeon expedition, those numbers were terrifying; a normal military campaign could suffer fewer casualties after weeks of open warfare. Yet here, the Maqaue had lost more than a third of their force in less than two weeks, and they were only penetrating deeper into the territory.
"Keep the worms separated!"
"Don’t let them burrow beneath us!"
The battlefield shook violently again.
*BOOM!*
Another sand worm emerged as the earth beneath them exploded, throwing several warriors high into the air.
Yet while the younger members struggled desperately against the beasts, several of the strongest individuals in the expedition appeared almost completely detached from the slaughter.
On a raised section of rock overlooking the valley, Davos sat around a small, hovering table with four elderly Maqaue Demi-Gods. The table itself was created through Davos’ unique ability, allowing them to maintain a private space even in the middle of a chaotic battlefield.
These weren’t the current heads of the training grounds. They were much older—Demi-God elders of the Maqaue clan who had chosen to project their consciousnesses directly into this location to communicate with Davos. Their expressions remained completely relaxed as they watched the bloodbath below.
"The big ones," the red-haired elder smiled, leaning back. "Let’s place another bet."
Davos looked toward him, his eyes unblinking. "Fine. But this time, I want information."
The red-haired Maqaue was covered almost entirely in thick crimson fur. His appearance resembled that of an oversized, battle-scarred monkey, though the pressure radiating from his projected form was far beyond anything an ordinary beast could possess. He stroked the fur around his chin before bursting into a deep laugh.
"Kid, you’re too cautious," he grinned, his eyes gleaming with amusement. "And far too hopeful."
Davos didn’t respond immediately. Over the past several days, he had become painfully aware of a bleak truth: this mission was probably going to kill him.
He had contacted each of these elders individually through their shared communication link before entering the deeper sections of the dungeon. He had asked direct questions, and they hadn’t bothered to lie.
The statistics were clear. The historical records were clear. The previous expeditions were clear.
There was a zero percent survival rate for the individual who actually completed the ritual to summon the Twelve-Eared Maqaue Devil. Zero. It wasn’t a low percentage that could be overcome with sufficient strength or preparation—it was an absolute fatality rate. Every person who had personally attempted the invocation had died in the process.
Davos was the only one who had agreed to undertake the leadership under false pretenses. His decision had originally been based on ignorance, as he hadn’t known the full truth. Now he did, and that changed everything.
If he was going to be sacrificed, he intended to know exactly what he was walking into.
"Woo!" The red-haired elder suddenly cheered. "Look at that!" He pointed down toward the valley. "That Wind Devil training ground old man only knows how to run!"
He grinned greedily. "I bet on the sand worm!"
The others turned their attention toward the field. Two enormous sand worms were currently tearing through the Maqaue formation, both standing at least at Tier 6. Their massive bodies emerged from the ground before crashing back beneath the soil, forcing the surrounding squads to constantly break position.
The Maqaue bloodline was powerful. Demi-humans possessed an enormous physical advantage over ordinary humans when it came to direct combat—their bodies were naturally stronger, their speed was far greater, and their bloodlines provided innate abilities that humans could only acquire through specialized classes.
Beasts, however, operated on a different scale. The higher a monster ranked, the more difficult it became for Demi-humans to overpower them through brute physical force alone. Pure-blooded beasts possessed bodies naturally built for warfare, their durability and instinct growing exponentially alongside their rank.
Even after splitting their forces into two separate containment groups, the Maqaue warriors continued to struggle against the two Tier 6 sand worms.
Davos watched the struggle for a few silent moments before speaking. "My people will kill them. It is only a matter of time." He gestured toward the frontline. "My bet stands on them."
The red-haired monkey elder chuckled. "Thirty minutes. If they kill the sand worm within thirty minutes, I’ll tell you whatever you want to know." His smile turned sly as he added, "And if they don’t... I get that godbeast you captured recently."
Davos narrowed his eyes. That captured godbeast carried immense strategic value, but he didn’t hesitate. "Agreed."
The moment the wager was struck, Davos raised his hand and sent a distinct command gesture toward the battlefield below. Several unit leaders caught the signal, and the four projected elders watched to see how the frontline would adapt.
Yet nothing immediately changed. The squad formations remained pinned, and the two sand worms continued to tear through the ranks unimpeded.
The red-haired elder cackled. "What’s wrong? Did you signal them to surrender?"
Davos remained silent, his gaze fixed on the edge of the battle line.
Then—a shadow blurred through the chaos.
The figure moved so quickly that several Maqaue warriors didn’t even notice him pass by. Up on the rock ledge, the four elders immediately shifted their focus toward the newcomer, their relaxed expressions hardening slightly.
They could gauge his rank from his movement efficiency alone.
"Another Tier 6?" The red-haired monkey frowned. The sudden entry of a Tier 6 combatant heavily tipped the scales in favor of Davos winning the wager. But what caught his attention wasn’t the rank—it was the combatant’s race.
It was a human.
The red-haired elder’s expression turned incredulous. Under normal circumstances, a Demi-human of the same tier would easily suppress a human. In a direct physical clash, the natural difference between their biological structures was simply too vast—Demi-humans held absolute superiority in strength, speed, natural defense, and physical recovery.
Humans only possessed one true counterweight against naturally superior races: Classes.
Specifically, the system classes originally forged and distributed by the Mad God Karth. Among them was the Summoner class, which had single-handedly allowed humanity to survive amidst hostile factions.
"Hmmm." The red-haired elder narrowed his eyes, leaning forward. "A sword?"
The human wasn’t opening a summoning portal or calling upon a high-tier spirit. He was simply walking forward with a dark blade held loosely in his right hand.
"Maybe he’s not a summoner," another elder remarked, stroking his chin. "If he were, wouldn’t he immediately rely on his contract beast?"
The elders watched closely. What could a human possibly accomplish against a Tier 6 beast using only a sword? Humans were hardly renowned for their martial techniques when compared to dedicated Demi-human combat lineages. A trace of blatant mockery appeared in several of their eyes.
Then Ethan reached the foot of the giant sand worm.
The massive beast towered above him, its shadow completely engulfing his frame. Its vast, ringed maw opened wide, dripping digestive acid onto the dark soil.
Ethan didn’t retreat or raise a defensive guard. He simply stood at the edge of the shadow, his sword held comfortably at his side. For a fraction of a second, his dark eyes turned completely cold.
Then—he activated the skill.
"Killer Zone."
*BOOM!*
A suffocating, blood-chilled aura exploded outward from Ethan’s body. The space immediately surrounding the massive sand worm violently warped, visible cracks shooting through the air as if reality itself were fracturing under sudden physical pressure.
From those mid-air ruptures, dozens—then hundreds—of ethereal, spectral broadswords materialized.
They descended simultaneously in a relentless, blinding rain of steel.
The Tier 6 sand worm didn’t even have time to react or retreat beneath the soil. Its massive, armored body was impaled from every direction as the spectral blades slammed downward with overwhelming force.
The giant creature convulsed violently, black blood and acidic fluids spraying across the scorched earth as the onslaught tore through its hide. It attempted to plunge back into the ground, but a second wave of descending swords pinned its massive frame directly to the bedrock.
The entire battlefield went dead silent.
Even the surrounding Maqaue warriors who had been desperately fighting for their lives froze in place, staring at the sight in absolute disbelief.
With a final, earth-shaking impact, the Tier 6 sand worm collapsed.
*THUD!*
The massive carcass crashed lifelessly onto the dark soil, raising a cloud of soot and dust.
Ethan stood calmly before the mountain of dead flesh, his dark blade resting quietly in his grip.
Up on the rock ledge, the red-haired elder’s mocking grin had vanished entirely. The other three Demi-God projections stared down in stunned silence, while Davos remained completely still, his eyes locked onto Ethan.
Then, a familiar translucent notification rang quietly inside Ethan’s mind.
