Dungeons were special existences that spread throughout the various territories of this world. Unlike kingdoms, clans, or ordinary regions, they followed no clear rules and answered to no known authority.
They didn’t have grades. There was no universal system that could tell someone whether a dungeon was safe, dangerous, or completely suicidal to enter, and no one truly knew how they were created.
Some scholars believed they were remnants of ancient worlds that had collapsed into themselves. Others believed they were fragments of divine realms that had fallen into the mortal world, while some believed dungeons had always existed, quietly waiting for life to discover them.
Whatever the truth was, one thing remained certain: they were unpredictable.
A person could step into a dungeon, conquer its territory, establish a settlement, and rule over it for decades without encountering anything beyond the native creatures. Another person could enter what appeared to be an ordinary cavern and stumble upon an ancient god forgotten by time and space.
That possibility alone was enough to make even the strongest beings cautious. Dungeons were places that shouldn’t be taken lightly—not even slightly.
That was why whenever people went in, they typically do so with a well known location in mind. The place was far too dangerous for exploration and that was a fact.
"Tracking Demi-God beasts is by far the hardest challenge for any Beast Tamer," Davos spoke while sitting at the front of the enormous turtle, his eyes constantly scanning the surroundings. "They aren’t merely elusive. Most creatures at that level possess intelligence comparable to humans—some are even smarter."
He tightened his grip around his whip. "Finding one in the wild is exceptionally difficult."
The giant turtle beneath them continued forward at a hurried pace, its massive legs crushing through the darkened terrain with every step. Behind it followed an increasingly large collection of beasts.
Davos had tamed several creatures during their journey through the dungeon, using them to transport the Maqaue clansmen and the hundreds of human slaves accompanying the expedition.
Ethan watched the creatures moving in formation, having to admit that Davos really was a miracle worker when it came to controlling beasts.
When they had first entered the dungeon, Ethan had seen the massive menagerie surrounding Davos and thought little of it. Now he understood: every creature had been carefully selected, subdued, and incorporated into a growing army.
The sheer scale of his control made the legends about Davos seem far less exaggerated.
But a Demi-God beast was different—entirely different.
Ethan had only encountered one in his life, and he still remembered the scene vividly. The creature had simply taken flight, yet the moment its enormous body rose from the ground, the pressure generated by its ascent had torn through the surrounding landscape.
A mountain had cracked, the earth had trembled, and Ethan had been left staring at the creature’s silhouette disappearing into the clouds. That was the divide between ordinary beasts and those that crossed into the divine realm—they existed on an entirely different plane.
"At Tier 4, beasts begin forming communities around their descendants," Davos continued explaining as the turtle pushed forward. "They don’t necessarily care about those descendants, as most Demi-God beasts are too intelligent to behave like ordinary animals, but those communities are still useful."
Ethan nodded slowly. "So you’re looking for their descendants."
"Exactly," Davos smiled. "If we find enough of them, we’ll eventually find something that leads us to the one we’re looking for."
The giant turtle suddenly slowed, its massive feet digging into the earth before finally grinding to a halt.
Ethan raised his head to see an enormous skull partially buried beneath the earth, its ancient bones covered with moss and thick vines crawling through its empty eye sockets into the surrounding swamp.
Beyond it lay a massive, flooded forest submerged beneath dark water. Ancient trees rose from the murk like pillars, their branches twisting overhead to block out most of the natural light, while strange ripples moved beneath the surface.
Ethan narrowed his eyes. "We aren’t off course by much."
He looked toward the left where a mountain rose in the distance, its peak seemingly piercing the sky.
That mountain had become an important landmark during their journey—it was where the Twelve-Eared Maqaue Devil was resting. An angel. Just thinking about it made Ethan’s expression grow serious.
They hadn’t moved particularly far from the peak, meaning Davos still had the ancient angel in the back of his mind. No matter what happened during this expedition, the ultimate objective remained the same: wake the Twelve-Eared Maqaue Devil.
But before they could even attempt the ritual, they needed a Demi-God beast.
*’Capturing a Demi-God...’* Ethan smiled faintly, his fingers tightening around his Storm Crossbow.
He knew what they were attempting was difficult—perhaps even damn near impossible—but if his plans were going to progress, this seemed like the only path available.
His evolution requirement wasn’t getting any easier, and neither was his situation within the Demi-human territories. He needed strength, and sometimes obtaining strength meant walking directly toward things that could kill him.
"Everyone, prepare yourselves!" Davos suddenly raised his whip, and the entire group slowed.
They had arrived.
The turtle moved into the swamp, and the moment its massive body entered the dark water, dozens of ripples spread across the surface.
Then—the water exploded.
Several massive creatures emerged simultaneously, their enormous bodies covered in dark scales. Their heads resembled crocodiles, but their jaws were far larger and lined with rows of uneven teeth as they crawled through the mud and hissed at the approaching army.
Davos’s expression hardened. "Kill as many as you can! We need to force the beast out!"
The Maqaue warriors immediately responded as weapons were drawn, beasts roared, and the human slaves scattered into their assigned groups.
*Boom!*
The swamp descended into absolute chaos.
A Maqaue warrior smashed his weapon into one of the crocodile-headed creatures, sending blood spraying across the water, while another beast lunged from beneath the surface only to be intercepted by one of Davos’s tamed creatures.
Ethan moved through the battlefield with his sword in hand. He didn’t waste a single movement—every strike was deliberate, and every opening was ruthlessly exploited.
The crocodile-headed beasts were strong, but most were still far beneath him.
The expedition had done this repeatedly over the past several days: entering one habitat after another, exterminating groups of beast kin, and wiping out bloodlines, yet not once had a Demi-God beast revealed itself. It was becoming increasingly frustrating.
Ethan cleaved through another beast, watching its massive body collapse into the swamp, before focusing his attention on the shifting battle lines. Something felt wrong.
Then suddenly—the creatures began retreating.
Ethan stopped, his eyes following their movements in disbelief. "What?"
The Maqaue warriors looked equally confused.
The crocodile-headed beasts weren’t merely fleeing in panic—they were moving with clear coordination. Groups separated from one another, some swimming through the water while others climbed onto the surrounding roots, retreating with distinct purpose.
Ethan’s expression slowly changed. "They’re retreating?"
Wild beasts under pressure usually fled in chaos, but this was different. They were maneuvering almost like an organized army, which meant something was controlling them from the shadows.
A leader.
A creature capable of organizing an entire population of beasts at this level couldn’t be ordinary—there was only one possibility that made sense: a Demi-God beast.
Davos reached the same conclusion, excitement flooding his voice. "It’s a good thing! Follow them!"
He cracked his whip through the air, and the Maqaue warriors immediately gave chase while Davos’s beasts surged forward deeper into the swamp.
For the first time in days, they finally had a direct trail leading to the creature they had been desperately searching for.
Ethan, however, didn’t move.
His expression remained calm as his eyes tracked the retreating beasts. Slowly, he lowered his sword and sheathed it, murmuring, "Something smells fishy."
Davos had already moved ahead with the vanguard, but Ethan remained behind for another moment, staring into the dark swamp.
The retreat was far too organized, and far too convenient.
They had spent days exterminating beast communities without finding a single clue. Now, immediately after another clash, the creatures suddenly retreated in a formation that practically laid out a path?
It could be a coincidence, but Ethan didn’t believe in coincidences inside a dungeon. There was an external hand involved—he just didn’t know whose.
Perhaps the Demi-God beast itself was baiting them, or perhaps something far more dangerous was waiting deeper inside the flooded forest.
Ethan slowly looked toward the distant mountain where the Twelve-Eared Maqaue Devil slept. His instincts were screaming that whatever was happening here, it wasn’t as simple as hunting a beast.
Tightening his grip around his weapon, Ethan stepped forward into the murky water. He couldn’t afford to separate from the main force, but neither would he blindly rush into an obvious trap.
*’Trust your gut.’*
With that thought, he moved into the swamp after them. Whatever was waiting ahead, he would find out soon enough.
