"The Nether Realm was largely undiscovered, with humanity and the Demi-humans exerting control over several citadels in key locations."
Captain Tom of the West Wall Brigade, an experienced Tier 5 summoner like the rest of the unit, spoke steadily as he piloted the void-class battleship through the chaotic currents of the Nether Realm.
He had intentionally kept his mouth shut during the earlier confrontation in the subterranean dock. When Vincent Karg had openly tested Ethan’s authority, Tom had simply stepped back to observe the young man’s character.
If Ethan had tried to resolve the blatant disrespect with gentle words and diplomatic excuses, Tom would have written him off as another naive aristocrat unsuited for the brutal frontiers of the Bastion. If Ethan had flown into an uncontrolled rage and executed Vincent on the spot, Tom would have marked him as a reckless, volatile liability who would get his men killed for petty vanity.
The way Ethan had actually handled it, however, had left a deep impression.
No drawn weapons. No raised voice. Just an effortless deployment of sheer, suffocating psychic dominance that brought an arrogant veteran to his knees in seconds, followed by an immediate return to cold, practical professionalism.
Tom had spent decades in the military witnessing young prodigies ride high on familial connections and early talent. Most of them strutted into warzones like emperors, only to have their delusions violently stripped away the moment blood hit the dirt.
Ethan was a completely different breed of monster.
"For now, the most vital footholds relevant to our deployment are the Nightfall Citadel, the Gaping Hole Citadel, and, of course, the Thousand Beast Citadel," Tom continued, keeping both hands locked onto the steering matrix as the warship sliced through the violet gloom.
Ethan stood beside the command console, gazing out through the crystalline viewport into the alien abyss.
The Nether Realm defied every natural law governing the mortal territories. There was no sun, yet the vast expanse was suffused with an eerie, perpetual luminescence filtering through turbulent clouds of violet and ash. Drifting through the endless void were colossal chunks of shattered continent, ancient ruins, and petrified leviathan corpses tethered together by thick strands of spatial mist.
Some zones had been charted; the vast majority remained complete mysteries.
"These three citadels were captured in recent cycles," Tom explained, adjusting the stabilizer runes. "A joint offensive between the Bastion’s vanguard legions and allied forces wrestled them away from several entrenched Demi-human clans. Ever since the territory was secured, a massive gold rush of exploration has flooded the sector."
In the mortal kingdoms, every square foot of fertile land, every mineral vein, and every ancient dungeon had already been mapped, taxed, and monopolized by family dynasties, ancient sects, or merchant cartels.
The Nether Realm, by contrast, was an untouched frontier. A single newly charted ravine could yield caches of primordial ore that had never been seen in the mortal world. Every forgotten catacomb held the possibility of legacy scriptures, high-tier evolution materials, or dormant divine artifacts.
Securing a permanent citadel meant anchoring a faction’s logistical line deep into the unknown.
"The Thousand Beast Citadel is uniquely valuable," Tom added, tapping an illuminated map on the console. "Its perimeter directly borders three untamed wilderness zones. Whoever holds the administrative rights controls the trade corridors, taxation, and forward supply depots for every expedition pushing deeper into the Nether."
Ethan nodded silently.
The political maneuvering of the Bastion was becoming crystal clear. Awarding the Thousand Beast Citadel to the Dawn Faction wasn’t just a ceremonial gesture to celebrate Ethan’s induction; it was a contested strategic asset.
And if the Ascendant Faction—who currently garrisoned the castle—was already refusing to vacate the premises, this assignment was never intended to be a peaceful transition.
It was an eviction by force.
"That’s our target," Tom announced, easing back on the propulsion throttles.
The battleship decelerated, banking smoothly past a dense curtain of stagnant mist to reveal a rugged hill rising from the center of a floating landmass.
Perched atop the jagged rise stood a fortress carved directly from dull gray stone, its foundations riddled with natural caves and choked by thick, thorny vines. It looked ancient, almost derelict from a distance, but Ethan could clearly sense the hum of heavy defensive formations vibrating along the battlements.
The Thousand Beast Citadel.
"Incoming!!" Tom’s voice snapped across the bridge.
*BOOM!*
A blinding sphere of superheated arcane energy erupted from the central tower of the castle, whistling through the sky at blinding speed.
Tom threw his weight against the helm, forcing the battleship into a sharp lateral roll. The energy round sheared past the port bow by a matter of yards, the concussive wake rattling the ship’s plating and sending a violent shudder through the deck.
"Arrogant bastards," Tom cursed under his breath, righting the ship’s trajectory.
This was the standard, corrupt playbook of the Bastion’s internal squabbles. The moment an administrative order mandated a handover, the occupying faction would abruptly sever communications under the convenient excuse of
*system maintenance*.
That legal fiction allowed their garrison to treat any incoming delegation as hostile raiders, opening fire without formal political consequences.
Unless the eviction writ was physically driven into the main hall and stamped onto the warden’s desk, the Ascendant Faction had no intention of walking away from their goldmine.
"They aren’t even bothering to offer a warning," Meng noted, stepping up to the window with a dangerous, excited grin spreading across his face.
"Why would they?" Ethan replied calmly, his eyes cold as he tracked the weapon emplacements along the walls. "They know exactly why we’re here."
Ethan turned to face his companions. "Is everyone ready?"
Hela stepped to his left, her dark hair shifting in the cabin breeze as her hand rested on the hilt of her curved blade. "Ready."
Ella stepped up beside her sister, a faint shimmer of spatial mana coiling around her wrists. "Whenever you give the word."
Meng stretched his arms above his head, his knuckles popping with sharp, dry snaps. "Let’s tear the gates off."
Behind them, the thirty seasoned soldiers of the West Wall Brigade stood in rigid, synchronized formation. Every man wore dark tactical combat armor reinforced with spirit-iron plating, their primary weapons checked, racked, and loaded.
They had witnessed Ethan break their company commander without lifting a finger. Their doubts were gone, replaced by the grim, unyielding focus of elite shock troops.
"Move!" Ethan commanded.
The battleship’s rear cargo ramp dropped open with a heavy mechanical hiss.
Thirty Tier 5 warriors leaped into the open void in flawless unison, utilizing kinetic deceleration boots to control their rapid descent toward the castle’s outer courtyard.
"Air raid! Repel boarders!" a sentry roared from the battlements, slamming an iron lever forward.
Alarm bells clanged violently through the towers as dozens of Ascendant defenders scrambled to man the heavy defensive batteries.
"Fire!"
*Boom! Boom! Boom!*
A relentless volley of heavy arcane artillery tore through the sky, filling the air with jagged streaks of crimson and azure light.
The descending soldiers began evasive maneuvers, but the defensive fire was too dense, overlapping into a fatal kill zone.
Ethan and his household gave the defenders no time to refine their aim.
"Scatter them!" Ethan’s voice cut through the howling wind.
*Rumble—*
A massive, shadowy silhouette uncoiled from the spatial rift beneath Ethan’s boots. The Mind Dragon materialized in the open air, its crystalline scales refracting the ambient light as it unfurled its colossal, leathery wings.
An instant later, a deafening reptilian roar echoed across the sky as Hela summoned her black dragon. The abyssal beast snapped its massive jaws, its dark scales radiating waves of suffocating heat as it surged forward.
Ethan dropped into the saddle of the Mind Dragon, gripping the reins with one hand while locking his boots into the stirrups. The beast beat its wings with thunderous force, diving straight toward the castle’s primary artillery towers.
Below, Hela’s black dragon opened its maw wide, channeling a torrent of abyssal mana from its core.
*FWOOSH!*
A catastrophic stream of black dragon fire cascaded across the outer curtain wall, engulfing three artillery nests simultaneously. The heat was so immense that the stone parapets cracked, forcing the Ascendant gunners to abandon their stations in a frantic scramble for safety.
"Maintain the dive!" Ethan ordered through the comm-link.
As the soldiers continued their descent, Meng thrust both palms downward, his *Air Nomad* authority seizing the surrounding atmospheric currents.
"Cluster up!" Meng shouted over the rushing gale.
Dense, spiraling currents of compressed air coalesced around the thirty descending soldiers, locking them inside a massive, hemispherical aerokinetic bubble.
*Boom! Boom! Boom!*
Incoming artillery shells slammed violently into the swirling wind barrier. Instead of detonating on impact, the pressurized gale warped their trajectories, deflecting the heavy ordnance away to detonate harmlessly in the empty ravines flanking the hillside.
The bubble held firm all the way down, dispersing just as the thirty soldiers touched down upon the bloodstained courtyard in a neat, sweeping combat formation.
*CREAK—*
The heavy iron portcullis of the citadel ground open, and a surging tide of Ascendant defenders poured out to meet them.
Dozens of elite warriors, armored beast-knights, and spellcasters flooded into the courtyard, their drawn blades gleaming with hostile intent. They had held this fortress for months, and they were not about to hand the keys to a fresh batch of Dawn recruits.
"Form line! Kill the interlopers!" an Ascendant commander roared.
"Shields up! Hold your ground!" Captain Tom bellowed, stepping to the front of the Cryptic Brigade as their heavy tower shields locked together with a metallic crash.
From the sky, Ethan swooped down like a descending executioner, the Mind Dragon leveling out just thirty feet above the charging enemy ranks.
Ethan drew the Storm Crossbow from his spatial ring.
*Click.*
A high-yield explosive bolt slotted smoothly into the groove.
Ethan sighted the lead Ascendant officer, his eyes narrowing into cold, predatory slits as his finger tightened on the trigger.
*Whoosh!*
The bolt vanished into a pale blur, punching straight through the officer’s enchanted breastplate and detonating his chest cavity in a violent spray of concussive force.
The man collapsed instantly, dead before his boots touched the flagstones.
"Advance!" Ethan’s command rang out across the courtyard, his voice cold and steady amid the chaos.
*Click. Whoosh!*
Another bolt fired in a split second, tearing through the throat of an enemy spellcaster who was halfway through a casting incantation.
Around them, spells detonated, steel clashed against steel, and dragons circled overhead.
The contested Thousand Beast Citadel had officially become a warzone.
