I Carry a Game World With Me
Chapter 229 - 211: No Clues at All! ImpossibleChapter 229: Chapter 211: No Clues at All! Impossible
Although they were already enemies, this was the first time Lu Feng had ever heard Mr. Chen’s voice.
"Liu Huaqiang, what the hell are you doing? Speak up!" Mr. Chen’s voice came through the phone again.
"Why, hello there, Mr. Chen!" Lu Feng said cheerfully into the phone. Of course, he had activated the voice changer on his Mecha weapon.
This way, even if the conversation was recorded or somehow intercepted, it couldn’t be traced back to him.
This Mecha weapon was the latest technology from the game world, created just before the apocalypse. Its voice-changing effect was so advanced that even the technology from that era would have had difficulty detecting it.
In the real world, no one would be able to detect it even if they spent decades trying.
On the other end, Mr. Chen was clearly taken aback. His voice grew cold. "Who are you? Where’s Liu Huaqiang?"
’Liu Huaqiang actually let someone else answer his phone. How imprudent.’
Lu Feng said playfully, "As for that Brother Huaqiang? He’s probably gone somewhere no one will ever find him!"
Mr. Chen’s expression changed instantly. "What do you mean?"
"Figure it out yourself!" Lu Feng said teasingly. "And what’s more, it’ll be your turn very soon, Mr. Chen!"
The words were part-announcement, part-threat. Mr. Chen’s heart sank. He was about to say something when he realized the other party had already hung up. All he heard was a dial tone.
After hanging up, Lu Feng took out his detection watch and began to scan the room.
’He didn’t want to leave any loose ends. What if Liu Huaqiang had planted a bug in here?’
The room was clean, but he did find something unexpected: a hidden compartment.
The compartment was extremely well-hidden.
Lu Feng carefully opened it. He then took a file folder out of his inventory space. When he opened the folder and saw what was inside, a cold smirk spread across his face.
The contents of the folder were anything but simple. It was clearly Liu Huaqiang’s life insurance.
It contained evidence of the collusion between the Gao Family and Mr. Chen, and even proof of his own dealings with them. A USB drive held data and audio recordings.
While none of it was irrefutable proof—Mr. Chen could probably make it all disappear with a few phone calls—it would still cause him a great deal of trouble.
’And what if Mr. Chen doesn’t get the chance to manipulate things? What if it blows up in the court of public opinion?’
’Then the guy would be absolutely screwed.’
’And if he were to disappear as well?’
’Everyone would jump to one conclusion: he’d fled the country.’
’After all, that’s a common choice for people like him.’
’Why else would so many of them send their wives and kids to study abroad and buy property overseas?’
This was perfect. After all, a man with Mr. Chen’s status couldn’t be dealt with as casually as Liu Huaqiang. The fallout would be too great.
...
「Meanwhile.」
Mr. Chen’s mood had been thoroughly ruined by the phone call.
He immediately called for his secretary.
"Mr. Chen, what’s happened? It’s so late," the secretary asked the moment he arrived.
Mr. Chen ordered, "Liu Huaqiang may be in trouble. Go to the Xinghua Hotel and check on him. If something really has happened, find out exactly what went down and who’s behind it."
The secretary nodded at once, then rushed out the door and headed for the Xinghua Hotel.
Before long, he was inside the Xinghua Hotel, making his way to the private section on the top floor.
As he keyed in the passcode, he was, of course, spotted by Liu Huaqiang’s men.
However, since it was him, the men all came forward to greet him respectfully.
One of them asked, "Secretary Chu, what brings you here?"
"Where’s your boss?" Secretary Chu asked at once.
The man replied instantly, "Brother Huaqiang’s in the suite. He just had three girls sent in, so he’s probably having a good time."
"Take me to him." Secretary Chu breathed a slight sigh of relief upon hearing this.
’This meant Liu Huaqiang was fine. I wonder where Mr. Chen got the idea that something had happened to him.’
The henchman knew Secretary Chu’s identity and understood that he must be here on important business; otherwise, a simple phone call would have sufficed.
But some important matters couldn’t be discussed over the phone.
He immediately led Secretary Chu to the private suite.
Outside the suite, over twenty burly men stood guard. They all greeted Secretary Chu upon his arrival.
These people were all Liu Huaqiang’s trusted confidants, so they naturally knew Secretary Chu’s identity.
Secretary Chu felt even more reassured at this sight.
’If something had happened to Liu Huaqiang, there’s no way these men would be standing around so calmly.’
The man leading the way announced, "Where’s Brother Huaqiang? Secretary Chu is here to see him."
The man in charge of the guards replied, "He’s still inside. Let me check with Brother Huaqiang."
With that, the man took out a special walkie-talkie and spoke into it. "Brother Huaqiang, Secretary Chu is here to see you." The walkie-talkie, which had a dedicated one-to-one channel, was their only way to contact him.
Usually, Brother Huaqiang didn’t like to be disturbed by knocking when he was... occupied. When the boss gave an order, his men had to follow it.
But after shouting into the device for a moment with no response, he could only try again. "Brother Huaqiang, Secretary Chu is here to see you."
Still, there was no reply.
The man looked at Secretary Chu, embarrassed.
Secretary Chu’s brow furrowed, but not from anger. Mr. Chen had sent him because he thought Liu Huaqiang was in trouble. ’Could he have been right? Did something really happen?’
He immediately ordered the man, "Open the door! Check if your boss is inside."
The henchman hesitated.
’He knew Brother Huaqiang’s explosive temper—the man had once slashed a fruit vendor for selling him a melon that wasn’t guaranteed to be ripe. Wouldn’t letting someone in to disturb him be a death wish?’
Annoyed by the hesitation, Secretary Chu strode forward and kicked the door himself.
’I don’t give a damn if Liu Huaqiang gets pissed.’
’Frankly, I’m here on behalf of Mr. Chen. I’ve announced myself twice, and he’s just ignoring me, putting on airs. He needs to be put in his place.’
Secretary Chu was surprisingly strong; he kicked the door open in just two tries. Inside, he could hear the sound of a powerful shower running in the large bathroom. Someone was bathing.
"No wonder he didn’t answer," Secretary Chu muttered, then shouted toward the bathroom, "Brother Huaqiang, finish your shower and get out here!"
But as he finished speaking, only three shapely, beautiful women emerged from the bathroom. Liu Huaqiang was not among them.
One of the women, having heard Secretary Chu, pointed to the master bedroom. "Brother Huaqiang is in there."
Secretary Chu then went and knocked on the master bedroom door.
But after a good while, even after he started pounding on it with his fists, there was still no response.
"Something really has happened." Alarmed, Secretary Chu kicked the door again. When it burst open, he was met with the sight of a completely empty master bedroom. There was no one there.
"Where is he?" Secretary Chu’s expression changed completely as he turned to look at Liu Huaqiang’s men.
Liu Huaqiang’s men were just as stunned:
"How can this be? Brother Huaqiang was clearly inside!"
"We never saw Brother Huaqiang leave, how could he have just disappeared?"
"What’s going on?"
"..."
Secretary Chu walked to the window. ’Could someone have taken Liu Huaqiang out this way?’
But a glance at the smooth exterior wall confirmed it was impossible. There were no handholds or footholds whatsoever.
Besides, there were no signs of a struggle. Liu Huaqiang was notoriously tough. ’Could someone really have dealt with him so silently, without alerting the guards outside, and without him even putting up a fight?’
’That was even more impossible.’
The more Secretary Chu thought about it, the more his scalp prickled. ’Liu Huaqiang vanished into thin air?’
He immediately called Mr. Chen. As soon as the call connected, Mr. Chen’s voice came through: "What’s the situation?"
Secretary Chu reported at once, "Mr. Chen, it seems something really has happened to Liu Huaqiang. He’s vanished into thin air. There were plenty of guards outside, but none of them noticed any commotion..."
He quickly recounted the events.
On the other end, Mr. Chen’s expression grew even darker. "Get our people in the criminal investigation department on this," he said urgently. "There must be a clue somewhere. Find me that person!"
Secretary Chu was taken aback. ’It’s not hard to read between the lines,’ he thought. ’Someone snuck in here, quiet as a ghost, and took Liu Huaqiang.’
’And they must have called Mr. Chen afterward, which is how he knew.’
’But who could possibly pull something like this off? And how?’
Not daring to hesitate, he immediately made a call to his contact in the criminal investigation department.
A team of uniformed officers arrived on the scene shortly after.
Secretary Chu immediately briefed the officer in charge and asked him to investigate.
The officers began a thorough investigation at once, but one by one, their expressions turned grim.
"Secretary Chu, are you sure someone was abducted from here? It seems impossible!"
"That’s right, there are no traces whatsoever. Not so much as a stray hair!"
"At this height, with this kind of building exterior? No one could pull that off. What’s more, the surveillance cameras covering the surrounding area below didn’t capture a thing."
These findings made Secretary Chu’s expression even more grim.
These were the best people for the job. If they couldn’t find a single thing, then nothing would be found.
He knew this was far from simple. He left in a hurry and returned to Mr. Chen’s side.
"How did it go? Did they find anything?" Mr. Chen asked immediately.
Secretary Chu shook his head. "They found nothing. It’s like a ghost was here!"
"Ghosts don’t make phone calls. It must be someone from Qingfeng Company." Mr. Chen’s face was as dark as a thundercloud. "Very good. This is their retaliation."
"Mr. Chen, what do we do now?" Secretary Chu asked.
Mr. Chen said coldly, "Do they think my only leverage is in the underworld? Tomorrow, several anti-monopoly departments are paying another visit to Qingfeng Network Company. The best they can hope for is a suspension of operations for rectification."
As he spoke, the coldness in his eyes deepened. Once they were shut down, he wouldn’t have to worry about them stirring up public opinion. He could finish them off during that time.
’Surely they wouldn’t dare use the same methods on me that they used on a gangster like Li Huaqiang?’
’They wouldn’t have the nerve.’
"Mm," Secretary Chu murmured in agreement.
