Dean had gritted his teeth and lunged forward once more.
This time, the commander hadn’t stood idly by either. Gripping his black bow with both hands, he had advanced directly towards Dean.
"CLANG!"
"CLANG!"
"BOOM!"
The two holy weapons had clashed dozens of times in a matter of seconds.
With every blow, golden light rose from the Spear of Dawn, clashing in the sky with the commander’s black holy energy.
Dean’s breathing was growing heavier by the moment. His arms had begun to tremble once more.
The Commander had noticed this.
"You’ve reached the end."
He suddenly swung his bow from bottom to top.
Dean, however, managed to step back at the last moment.
Yet even the pressure from the attack cut through his chest like a blade. Another drop of blood trickled down from his lips. The Commander did not let this opportunity slip.
One step...
Two steps...
On the third step, he shifted all his weight onto his right foot and raised his bow to deliver the killing blow.
At that very moment, Dean’s eyes changed.
For the first time, the Commander had opened his shoulder too wide whilst preparing his attack.
Perhaps he’d thought Dean could no longer put up a fight.
Perhaps he was too certain of his victory. But that tiny opening...
It was enough.
The Spear of Dawn in Dean’s hands suddenly shone like a brilliant sun. Holy Power coursed through the spear and spread throughout his entire body.
In that moment, the world seemed to slow down.
The Commander’s movement, the path the spear followed, the spot where his foot struck...
All of it unfolded in slow motion before Dean’s eyes.
"Now!" Dean thought.
He shifted all his weight onto his left foot and slid his body sideways.
The Commander’s deadly blow merely grazed his shoulder.
At the same moment, Dean twisted his waist.
The Spear of Dawn shot forward, tracing a golden trail of light.
"THUNK!"
The Commander’s eyes widened for the first time.
The bow in the Commander’s hand fell to the ground in an instant; it was plain to see from the eyes behind that mask, which he hadn’t yet managed to comprehend, what was happening.
The tip of the spear had pierced his chest.
For a moment, both of them froze where they stood. The Commander looked down.
He saw the golden spear that had pierced through his chest.
"Impossible."
Dean gave no reply.
With both hands, he thrust the spear even further in.
The golden light began to flood into the commander’s body.
The black sacred energy was resisting frantically, but it was being shattered by the pure Holy Power of the Spear of Dawn.
The commander roared in agony.
He spread his wings as wide as they would go.
He tried to pull back with all his might.
But it was already too late.
Dean shouted one last time.
"JUST FUCKING DIE!"
He swung the spear upwards.
The wound in his chest had been torn all the way up to his neck.
The commander’s body staggered a few paces. His thread-like mask slowly fell to the ground.
The look of astonishment on his face had not yet faded. He sank to his knees. He turned his eyes towards Dean one last time.
"So..."
"The weapon... has truly chosen you...y--"
His words were cut short.
In the next instant, his body toppled forwards.
The moment he hit the ground, the black sacred energy had completely dissipated. A heavy silence descended upon the battlefield.
All the enemy angels stood frozen in their tracks. None of them had ever imagined their commander could be defeated.
Percival, too, held his breath involuntarily. Then he raised his sword with all his might.
"Their commander is dead!"
"Attack!"
This cry had restored the morale of the allied angels. Conversely, fear had appeared in the eyes of the enemy angels for the first time. Dean, however, stood motionless where he was.
The golden light emanating from the Spear of Dawn had begun to fade slowly.
His legs trembled. He managed to stay on his feet by planting his spear into the ground. The Holy Power within his body was almost completely depleted, yet despite this, he did not close his eyes.
For he knew... this battle was not yet over.
The moment their commander’s lifeless body fell to the ground, the enemy angels’ formation had completely collapsed.
"No..."
"Commander..."
A few angels, overcome by initial shock, had involuntarily taken a step back. But Percival gave them no such chance.
"Don’t let a single one escape!"
The colossal Ghost, gripping his sword with both hands, lunged forward.
"BOOM!"
The moment his sword struck the ground, the two enemy angels in front of him were flung into the air simultaneously.
Before they could even hit the ground, Percival swung his sword a second time.
"SLASH!"
Both their bodies were split in two. The other friendly angels had also launched their attack at the same time.
The side that had been on the defensive just moments before was now fully on the offensive. The death of their commander had shattered the enemies’ resolve.
"Run!"
One of them panicked and spread his wings, but before he could take flight, a holy spear hurled from behind pierced his back and emerged through his chest.
The angel crashed to the ground with an agonised scream. Another had tried to flee into the forest.
The moment Percival noticed this, he hurled his sword with all his might. The colossal blade sliced through the air.
"THUNK!"
It had entered the fleeing angel’s back and exited through his chest.
The body was dragged a few metres further before coming to a standstill. The battle had ceased to be a duel.
This had turned into a hunt, and this time the hunters were Percival and the remaining group of allies.
The enemy angels who had just moments ago been trying to surround Dean were now surrounded themselves.
The friendly angels moved in groups of three, closing in on every enemy trying to escape from different directions.
Wings were being severed, weapons were falling, and desperate screams echoed through the woodland.
Not a single angel was trying to surrender. Each had chosen to fight until their last breath.
That was why none of them was spared. The last enemy angel had collapsed to his knees.
Most of the feathers on his wings had been torn away, and the sword in his hand had long since fallen to the ground. He looked at Percival, gasping for breath.
There was neither fear nor regret on his face. Only silence...
Percival said nothing and drew his sword from the ground. With a single, flawless stroke, he brought it down.
"SLASH!"
The angel’s head had been severed from its body. And so, the last remaining enemy in the woodland had perished.
In an instant, everything was engulfed in silence. The wind had begun to blow once more, and with great force.
Where the blades had clashed just moments before, now only the sound of red and white blood dripping onto the ground could be heard.
Percival took a deep breath. Then he slowly turned towards Dean.
He rested his sword against his knee and sank onto one knee.
"Victory is ours, my Lord."
Dean, however, could not reply.
The Spear of Dawn was still in his hand.
But as the last remnants of Holy Power in his body were exhausted, his eyes began to grow heavy. His knees gave way.
Just as he was about to fall to the ground, Percival lunged forward and caught him in his arms. The battle was over.
But the price of this victory...
Had been far heavier than Dean had ever imagined.
