I Conquer Hell and Heaven With 666 Trillion Coins
Chapter 79: A...Talking Frog?Dean... saw a frog standing in front of him.
"Ello ello ello! No need to be alarmed, old chap! Perfectly normal gentleman here!"
The frog had spoken English in a strange dialect, leaving Dean completely dumbfounded. It was almost like a Victorian accent, to be exact.
Already taken aback, Dean didn’t know what to say; he could only manage a smile and had to struggle not to burst out laughing.
The frog was wearing a suit, holding a black-and-white cane, with a monocle in one eye and a stovepipe hat on his head.
It was as if he were a character straight out of a cartoon.
"Oh, come now! One ought to answer when a fellow says ’ello,’ shouldn’t one?" said the frog.
Dean didn’t know what to say, and as his smile grew wider, he muttered, "Hi..."
Beneath the mask, beneath the mist that shrouded his face, his smile was pure. He couldn’t even remember the last time he’d smiled so naturally.
"Well, do tell me then, bloke! What might your name be?" the frog inquired.
With every passing second, Dean felt as though he were losing his mind.
"I’m Decanus; who are you then?" he asked.
"Why, I am your humble servant, Ser Humphrey Croaksworth the Second! Entirely at your command, old chap!"
The frog, who had introduced himself as Ser Humphrey Croaksworth the Second, continued to look at Dean with a smile.
Dean was truly on the verge of bursting out laughing, but he did his utmost to hold it in.
He couldn’t help but think, albeit involuntarily, "There was a fucking first one?"
Immediately afterwards, looking carefully at the frog, he asked, "All right then... Are you the one who’s going to tell me what the puzzle is?"
"No, no, no! It is you who shall see the puzzle, and the answer besides! Why, it’s all around us, indeed, it’s right around you!"
At the same time, Dean began to look around again, but at first he didn’t realise anything was amiss.
Humphrey...well, this fucking frog actually gave him a clue, but he had NO idea what to do with it.
All around him?
What on earth did that mean?
Dean had, in fact, been scanning his surroundings constantly for the past five minutes.
It was a small cave they were in.
A patch of light coming from an unknown source and a darker area.
It really didn’t make any sense.
Dean slowly turned his head from one side of the cave to the other.
Nothing.
Just light, dark and stone.
Rocky walls. A rough floor. A ceiling that disappeared into the darkness above them.
And that strange light.
It wasn’t coming from a torch, and it surely wasn’t coming from the ceiling.
Dean couldn’t even tell where it was coming from.
The cave was... illuminated. Not brightly, either. There was just enough light for him to see.
He narrowed his eyes.
"It’s around me...?" he said, almost asking.
"Yes, yes!" Humphrey immediately exclaimed from behind him. "Precisely, old chap! You’re catching on!" he added.
He was messing with Dean.
Dean turned around.
"I haven’t caught onto anything."
"Oh."
The tiny frog adjusted his monocle.
"Then perhaps you ought to catch on a little faster."
Dean stared at him. Humphrey smiled, and that made Dean stare at him a little longer. He was so close to strangling this frog.
"I already don’t like you."
"Splendid! That means we’re becoming acquainted."
Dean sighed and turned away.
He began walking very slowly.
His eyes moved over every inch of the cave. He checked the walls first.
Nothing.
He pressed his hand against the stone, feeling its uneven surface beneath his fingers. He examined the cracks, the small holes, even the places where moss had grown between the rocks.
Still nothing.
He checked the floor.
Nothing.
Then the ceiling.
Still nothing.
Five minutes passed and then ten.
Humphrey simply followed him. Jumping around, his sloppy feet were making noises. Every time he jumped, or rather hopped, around, he would make the noise:
"Croak, croak!"
His little cane tapped against the stone with every step.
"Tap."
"Tap."
"Tap."
It was irritating, in fact, very irritating.
"Are you going to help me?" Dean asked, almost annoyed.
"My dear fellow, I already have." Humphrey the frog answered.
"You gave me a vague sentence," Dean added, this time, very annoyed.
"A clue." Humphrey directly replied.
"A vague fucking clue," Dean said. He felt like he was losing his mind. A fucking frog was giving him a migraine.
"A wonderfully obvious clue," Humphrey replied while croaking once more.
Dean slowly turned his head and said: "Under my command, my ass."
Humphrey’s smile widened.
"It’s all around you, remember?"
Dean clicked his tongue and continued searching.
Then he stopped. The light...was different.
He looked toward the illuminated section of the cave. Something about it bothered him.
There were no torches, no glowing crystals, no magical formations that Dean could see.
Yet the light was clearly coming from somewhere. He stepped closer to the wall. The further he walked, the brighter it became.
Dean placed his hand against the stone.
Nothing.
He moved his hand across it.
Still nothing.
Then out of nowhere:
[Shimmer.]
Dean froze.
For half a second, something flashed across the surface of the stone.
He immediately stepped back.
"What the...?"
Humphrey stopped tapping his cane.
"Oh?"
Dean stared at the wall.
There it was again. A tiny glimmer. Almost impossible to notice.
He leaned closer and realised the stone itself wasn’t glowing.
Instead, something embedded inside it was reflecting the light.
Dean’s eyes narrowed.
He reached toward it and scraped away some of the thin layer of dirt covering the stone.
A small crystal appeared. It was a clear crystal.
Completely transparent. Dean pulled it free with some force.
The moment it entered his hand, the light passing through it bent.
Dean’s eyes widened. He slowly rotated the crystal, and the light shifted with it.
A thin beam suddenly appeared across the cave wall.
Dean immediately looked toward where it landed.
Nothing.
He moved the crystal again, and then the beam moved.
Dean stared at it, almost blinded by it.
Then he looked at Humphrey; the frog was grinning from ear to ear.
"Ah! Now you’re beginning to see it, aren’t you, my good fellow?"
Dean didn’t answer. He legit was getting annoyed every time this frog spoke.
He looked back at the crystal.
Then at the light and then at the walls.
He finally understood.
"Light deflection," he said in a calm voice.
"Precisely!" Humphrey croaked...literally.
It seemed like he found the main way he needed to follow.
