A few moments later, the tunnel began to widen. The golden markings on the walls became brighter.

Dean could hear something. At first, it was barely noticeable. A distant rumbling.

Then came the sound of rushing air. The further they walked, the stronger it became.

Dean’s pace increased. The tunnel suddenly opened, and with that, Dean stopped at the edge.

His eyes widened.

The cave was gone in an instant.

In front of him was a massive underground chamber.

It was enormous.

Far larger than anything that should have been able to fit beneath the cave they had just left.

A vast stone bridge stretched across the chamber, suspended above a seemingly endless abyss.

Far below, Dean could see faint blue lights moving through the darkness. Something was alive down there. He couldn’t tell what.

On the other side of the bridge stood a gigantic stone doorway. It was covered in ancient symbols, and directly above it was a single inscription.

Dean narrowed his eyes. He couldn’t read it, and even if he could not sure he would understand it.

"What does that say?" Dean asked, wondering.

Humphrey hopped beside him. The little frog adjusted his monocle.

"Ah."

He looked toward the doorway. Then toward Dean.

"Now that, my dear fellow, is an excellent question."

Dean’s eyes narrowed.

"Don’t tell me," he said. He looked done with this dungeon.

Humphrey smiled.

"Another puzzle."

Dean’s shoulders dropped.

"You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. Right away? I thought we would take a break..."

"Oh, not at all!" Humphrey said as he happily hopped forward.

"This is a dungeon, after all!" he added to his words.

Dean looked back toward the tunnel they had just exited.

For a brief moment, he considered going back. Then he heard the faint sound of something moving beneath the bridge.

His attention immediately returned to the chamber.

"Fine."

He stepped onto the bridge, and the moment his foot touched the stone, it happened:

"BOOM!"

A deep sound echoed through the chamber.

The symbols along the bridge lit up one after another.

Dean froze.

Humphrey smiled deeply.

Then the frog slowly looked down at the bridge.

"Well," he said.

Dean glanced at him.

"What?" he asked.

"I believe the dungeon has noticed us," Humphrey replied.

"Oh really? That’s fucking great!" Dean screamed; at this point he was so close to losing his mind.

"Indeed."

Dean took another step.

"BOOM."

Another symbol illuminated. This time it was a calmer explosion.

Then another, and another.

A line of glowing symbols began travelling across the bridge toward the massive door.

Dean watched as the final symbol reached the doorway.

"CLICK!"

The enormous doors shifted.

But they didn’t open.

Instead, a voice echoed throughout the chamber. Deep and ancient.

Almost mechanical.

"PROVE YOUR WORTH."

Dean stared at the door while the silence followed.

Then Humphrey cleared his throat.

"Well, I suppose that was rather straightforward."

Dean slowly looked toward him.

"Straightforward?" he asked.

"Yes."

"It literally just told me to prove my worth. What the fuck does that even mean?" he said, confused.

"Precisely."

"That’s not fucking straightforward."

Humphrey tilted his head.

"Would you prefer it to say, please prove your worth, preferably before lunch?"

Dean stared at him.

Humphrey smiled.

Dean couldn’t help it.

A quiet laugh escaped him.

It was brief. Dean was in a place that made him feel so fucking dumb that those words made even him laugh.

Humphrey’s eyes widened.

"Ah!" Humphrey shouted suddenly.

Dean immediately stopped laughing.

"What?" Dean said.

"I knew it!"

"Knew what?" he added.

"That I could make you laugh."

Dean’s smile disappeared.

"Don’t get excited, frog."

"Oh, I am positively thrilled!" Humphrey replied, his smile grew even bigger; it was almost as big as his face.

Humphrey tipped his felt hat.

"Come along, Ser Decanus."

Dean shook his head.

"You’re seriously calling me that?" Dean said; he almost felt cold out of embarrassment.

"Of course."

"Why?"

"Because you are the gentleman who has completed the first trial."

Humphrey extended his little cane toward the massive doorway.

"And, judging by the sound of those mechanisms, I should imagine the dungeon is quite eager to see whether you survive the second."

Dean looked forward.

The enormous stone doors finally began to open. A wave of cold air rushed through the chamber.

Something was waiting beyond them. Something powerful. Something that Dean could already feel despite the distance.

His fingers tightened. He swallowed once and then stepped forward.

Humphrey followed.

And just before Dean crossed the threshold, Humphrey gave one final little hop.

"Ello, ello, ello..."

Dean glanced down at him.

"What now?"

Humphrey’s grin widened.

"I do believe we’re getting somewhere, old chap."

Dean shook his head.

"I’m starting to regret bringing you with me."

"But you see, my dear chap, I followed you!" he said and cheerily hopped through the doorway.

Dean stared after him for a moment.

Then, with a quiet sigh, he followed.

Behind them, the ancient doors began to close.

"BAAAAAM!!!"

The cave they had entered through disappeared into darkness.

And the dungeon’s second trial, its second exam, began.

Dean could see it. It was completely covered in light and those ancient symbols. Yet it was not possible to see everything clearly.

The only thing he could be certain of—the only thing he could see and make out—was the pair of eyes gazing at them.

A pair of eyes, of unknown origin. An energy, belonging to an unknown source.

Dean could not fully grasp to whom these things belonged, nor just how profound the situation was.

He was fixated on the urge to survive, but one thing was certain: he was currently helpless and clueless.

Yet, despite everything, he was still aware of that energy bearing down on him, drawing nearer with every passing second.

He had to act, of course, if he wanted to live.

That was why he had drawn out the Moon’s Rope and the Spear of Dawn, which lay deep within his soul.

Now he had to resist this energy.

He had never imagined he would be fighting in a dungeon where he would have to solve puzzles.
