I Conquer Hell and Heaven With 666 Trillion Coins
Chapter 84: Riddle Me ThisSeveral hours had passed since he went to sleep. After all this time, Dean woke slowly.
His body was still hurt. His arm was still broken. His rib still protested whenever he moved too quickly. It legit hurt like hell.
But he still felt considerably better.
He sat up carefully. Humphrey was sitting at the table, drinking tea.
Dean stared at him. To be honest, he almost laughed like crazy. The view was so maddening.
"You drink tea?"
Humphrey looked over. Still blowing the steam coming out of the cup of tea.
"Of course," he said.
"You’re a frog," said Dean. He realised how many times he had said this sentence since he joined the dungeon.
"Yes, and you are a human. What’s wrong with that?" asked Humphrey.
Dean rubbed his face with his left hand.
"I don’t even know why I’m surprised anymore."
Humphrey chuckled and asked, "How do you feel?"
"Better," Dean explained. Although he still was in a horrible state, it surely was better than before.
"Excellent," said Humphrey.
Dean slowly stood and stretched his left arm. His right arm remained still.
"Still broken," said Dean. Honestly, because of his Holy Power Energy, he thought it would get healed by now.
"Indeed. You didn’t expect it to heal right away, right chap?" asked Humphrey. You could hear a tiny bit of shock in his voice.
"I honestly did. When I fought angels and killed many of them, I got so badly hurt that I couldn’t breathe, screamed and shit. So not healing my bones is quite annoying."
When Dean said these words, Humphrey looked shocked, almost confused.
"I am not going to ask, chap," the frog said.
With that, Dean walked toward the centre of the chamber. He noticed something he hadn’t seen before.
Four keys. They were sitting on the table.
A black key.
A silver key.
A golden key.
And a white key.
Dean frowned.
"What are those?" He couldn’t help but ask.
Humphrey smiled.
"Your next examination. The third puzzle of this dungeon."
Dean looked at the keys. Then at Humphrey.
"What is it?" he questioned.
"Riddles. Precisely."
Dean sighed and then said, "So I have to solve riddles while injured."
"No."
Humphrey pointed toward the four keys.
"You must solve riddles while thinking."
Dean raised an eyebrow and added, "That sounds worse."
"Much worse," the frog responded.
Humphrey hopped down from his chair and walked toward the centre of the room. Behind him, the walls began moving, and stone shifted.
The resting chamber expanded. At the far end, a gigantic door appeared.
Only one. Big enough to call it a little apartment...as in its height.
It was covered in ancient markings and completely sealed. Dean immediately noticed four keyholes arranged in a square at its centre. Humphrey raised his cane.
"There is only one door," the frog said, pointing his cane towards the door.
Dean nodded.
"And four keys," he said.
"Correct," Humphrey responded quickly.
"Each riddle gives me one key," Dean said, guessing.
"Precisely, chap!" said Humphrey, quite excited this time.
"And I need all four to open that one door," Dean said, honestly this was not a hard exam or a puzzle. He just needed to get 4 questions, 4 riddles right.
Humphrey’s smile widened.
"Now you’re catching on."
Dean looked at the door and then at the keys.
"Let’s hear the first one then," he said, showing that he was ready for the riddle.
Humphrey picked up the black key. His playful expression slowly disappeared.
"My dear fellow..."
He paused.
"Let us see whether you possess more than physical endurance."
The black key began glowing.
"Riddle me this," he said, jokingly.
Humphrey’s voice echoed through the chamber.
"I am born when you are born, yet I have no mother. I grow when you grow, yet possess no flesh. I follow you faithfully beneath the sun, but abandon you beneath the moon. I may become long when you stand still and short when you run, yet vanish entirely when the world gives me nothing to cling to."
Dean listened carefully.
"You may step upon me, but never hold me. You may see me, yet I possess no eyes. And should you place yourself between me and the light..."
Humphrey smiled.
"I become you," he said.
Dean stared at him.
"A shadow," he answered. It was too easy, right?
Humphrey smiled.
"An obvious answer," he said.
Dean frowned.
"So it’s wrong?" he said...almost asked.
"Not necessarily," Humphrey replied.
Dean thought about it. A shadow fit almost perfectly. But Humphrey was waiting. He wasn’t going to accept the first answer.
Dean looked toward the light. Then toward the darkness. Then toward his own shadow.
"The answer isn’t the shadow itself."
Humphrey’s eyes brightened.
Dean continued.
"A shadow is only what happens when light is blocked. The thing you’re actually describing is the darkness created by that absence."
Humphrey smiled.
"Go on."
"Darkness is born whenever light is removed. It can appear beside me, follow me, stretch around me, disappear when there is enough light, and take the shape of me when I stand between the light and something else."
Dean looked at Humphrey.
"So the answer is darkness...but at the same time it is shadow?" he said. This was his answer.
Humphrey raised the black key.
"Correct."
The key floated from his hand and landed in Dean’s left palm. Dean examined it.
"First one," he thought.
He slowly walked toward the door. His steps were careful. The pain in his ribs had not disappeared. He reached the first keyhole and inserted the key.
"Click."
The black key locked into place.
The door remained closed.
Humphrey smiled.
"Three more."
Dean turned around.
"Let’s hear the second then," he said.
Humphrey picked up the silver key.
"Very well."
He cleared his throat.
"I can be broken without being touched. I can be given without being held. I can be kept without being stored. I can be lost without being stolen. I can be made without hands and shared without becoming smaller."
Dean frowned.
Humphrey continued.
"I can bind two people who stand a thousand miles apart. I can unite armies. I can destroy kingdoms. I can survive the death of the person who created me."
He paused.
"And yet, if forgotten..."
Humphrey smiled.
"I may cease to exist."
Dean didn’t answer immediately.
He thought about promises.
Secrets?
Ideas?
Words?
Maybe memories.
He slowly sat down on the edge of the stone bed. His arm was beginning to ache again. Humphrey noticed.
"Rest if you need to."
Dean nodded.
"I will," he said.
He leaned back and added, "When I find the answers."
