The heavy silence that followed the subjugation of the High Council did not linger within the confines of the West Annex.
Jack Kaiser turned his back on the ten kneeling nobles, his dark coat whispering against the duskwood floor as he moved toward the heavy iron-oak double doors.
Following him, King Maelor advanced with an impactful gait, his regal presence exuding a composed and formidable aura.
Prince Rhys flanked his father, his posture straight, his gaze fixed forward with the focused, predator calm of a warrior whose mind had already shifted past the political maneuvering and locked entirely onto the final trial ahead.
Behind them, the ten new councilors rose slowly to their feet, their limbs moving in stiff, synchronized compliance under the lingering metaphysical weight of the Soul Contracts.
They exited the private council wing, passing down the long gallery of arched marble colonnades and descending into the lower bastions of the upper garrison bailey.
The palace guard quarters were cavernous, built from dressed granite blocks and lined with silver-plated weapon racks, ancestral banners of the Throne hanging from soaring timber crossbeams overhead.
Standing at the center of the granite staging square, flanked by two dozen elite palace sentries holding heavy tower shields, was Captain Theo Althalos.
Theo was a pureblood exemplar of House Althalos, one of Caeloria’s oldest, wealthiest, and most rigid military dynasties.
His silver plate armor was polished to an immaculate, mirror shine, adorned with golden sunburst filigree that marked his status as a Senior Praetor of the Sovereign Vanguard.
His hair was pure, spun gold, cut neatly along the line of a sharp, aristocratic jawline.
His cold, cerulean eyes were narrow, etched with the arrogant disdain of a high-born commander who had spent decades looking down upon the lower wards.
When Rhys had trained in the courtyards, Theo was the senior officer who had repeatedly ordered the drillmasters to double the physical punishments, publicly reminding the mixed-blood boy that common dirt could never hold the line against true elven nobility, and that no bastard would ever wear the silver cloak of the Vanguard.
As the King approached, Theo snapped his right gauntlet against his breastplate, bowing with crisp, formal precision.
His eyes flicked across the entourage, widening slightly as he noted the presence of the ten newly appointed lineage heads following submissively behind Maelor, before his gaze settled on Rhys.
A subtle curl of disgust twitched at the corner of Theo’s lip before he masked it beneath military discipline.
"Your Majesty," Theo spoke, his voice clear, sharp, and ringing off the granite stones. "The garrison was placed on immediate lockdown following the mana fluctuations in the grand chamber. The outer gates are secured, the perimeter wards remain intact, and the High Vanguard stands ready. Yet the bells for the Grand Assembly have not rung, and the Great Houses arrive unescorted. We await your royal command."
King Maelor stopped five paces before him, his towering frame casting a long shadow across the granite flags.
"Captain Althalos. The old Council has been dissolved. Under the ancient founding charters of Caeloria, a claimant to the Throne must prove his martial superiority by besting an active Captain of the Sovereign Vanguard in a trial of dungeon clearance."
Theo straightened his back, his brow furrowing as his cerulean eyes hardened with defensive pride.
"With all due respect, Your Majesty," Theo said, stepping forward, his hand resting firmly on the pommel of his enchanted broadsword.
"A sovereign challenge to the Vanguard requires the formal review of the Military Oversight Committee and the personal signature of Lord Malakor. We cannot simply bypass centuries of martial jurisprudence for an irregular trial. Furthermore, if this challenge is meant to test the bastard standing at your flank, the Vanguard’s answer is already settled. A mixed-blood who rolled in the mud of the lower wards has no standing to challenge the officers of the Crown."
Theo turned his cold gaze directly onto Rhys, his lips parting in a condescending sneer.
"Have you forgotten the academy yards, boy?" Theo asked, his voice carrying clearly to the two dozen sentries standing at attention.
"You spent three years on your knees, spitting up blood from wooden practice staves, failing to match the basic footwork of pureblood squires. You were allowed to live in the palace out of His Majesty’s misplaced mercy, not merit. If you believe your little excursion into the frontier qualifies you to wear the Sun Crest, you are gravely mistaken. The Vanguard will not bend its knee to a Vileblood."
Rhys met the captain’s gaze without flinching. His expression did not shift; his fingers did not twitch toward his daggers.
His breathing remained slow and rhythmic, his eyes observed Theo with the clinical, detached focus of an assassin calculating an opening.
"Good," Jack Kaiser’s voice cut in, low, smooth, and absolute. "Then your confidence will make the outcome decisive."
Theo’s eyes snapped to Jack, his hand tightening on his hilt. "Who authorized this human to address the Praetors of the Vanguard? By the laws of the realm, an outsider who enters the inner bailey armed is subject to summary execution!"
"The laws of your realm changed thirty minutes ago, Captain," Jack replied calmly.
Jack raised his right hand. Pure, dark mana surged from his palm, tearing through the ambient fabric of reality with a concussive, low-frequency roar.
A massive, circular rift of swirling obsidian and silver light ripped open in the center of the granite square, expanding until it spanned ten paces.
The spatial distortion pulled violently at the guards’ capes, leaking a dense, rich atmosphere that smelled of petrified earth and an ancient, concentrated mana unlike anything found on the mortal continent.
"Step through," Jack commanded, looking back at Maelor, the ten councilors, Theo, and Rhys. "Let us set the stage."
Jack turned and walked directly into the tearing void. Maelor and Rhys followed without hesitation. Theo Althalos drew a deep breath, his jaw clenching as he signaled four of his elite bodyguards to follow, his hand resting firmly on his broadsword as he stepped into the light.
The ten councilors, compelled by their Soul Contracts, filed through in rapid succession.
The spatial transit collapsed behind them, and the ten elven nobles gasped simultaneously, stumbling as their boots struck solid, polished stone ground.
They were not standing in a damp, decaying subterranean cave or a ruined stone dungeon.
They stood upon a colossal, elevated obsidian plateau overlooking the vast, breathtaking expanse of Floor 25 of the Tartarus Spire.
The sheer scale of the landscape defied mortal comprehension.
The sky above was a dynamic tapestry of shifting auroras, casting a warm, luminous radiance over a thriving, continent-sized world.
Below the plateau stretched an impossibly vibrant ecosystem divided into distinct, harmonious biomes.
To the east lay an endless, emerald canopy of colossal ancient forests whose leaves pulsed with life.
To the west, jagged crystalline glaciers towered like frozen cathedrals, refracting light across vast tundra valleys.
To the north, a massive, obsidian volcanic range rose into the sky, its primary caldera venting slow, majestic rivers of golden magma that fed into deep geothermal canyons.
Yet it was not the breathtaking geography that froze the breath in the councilors’ throats.
It was the inhabitants.
