The lair was massive. A cavern so wide that the far wall was barely visible through the icy mist. Frozen stalactites hung from the ceiling like the teeth of a buried god. The floor was an unbroken sheet of ice so clear it looked like standing on glass.
And there, coiled in the center of the cavern, was the Glacial Tyrant.
An ice-wyvern. A thirty-foot monster stretching from snout to tail. Its body was wrapped in layers of ancient, compressed ice. It kept its massive wings pinned to its sides, though they looked big enough to span forty feet wide. Its skull was shaped like a wedge, clearly built for breaking through rock.
Its eyes were solid blue.
Frost poured off its body in steady waves. The air around it shimmered with a cold so intense that moisture froze before it could even form snow.
The Tyrant’s eyes locked onto them.
It didn’t roar at first. It just watched. It weighed them up, smart enough to realize that anyone stepping into its territory was either food or a foe.
Holden stepped forward.
The Tyrant’s pupils contracted.
Then it screamed.
SKREEEEEEEE!
The sound was physical. It crashed against Holden’s chest like a wall, vibrating his ribs and shaking loose ice from high above. The cavern mist exploded away, and the temperature plummeted so violently that frost instantly climbed an inch up Lyra’s spear.
The Tyrant reared back, chest swelling as it drew in air.
Absolute Zero breath.
"Holden!" Maeve’s voice was sharp in his ear. "That breath attack can freeze organic tissue solid in under two seconds. Do NOT let it hit you directly."
Holden didn’t step back.
He stepped forward.
The Tyrant unleashed its breath.
A torrent of white-blue destruction erupted from its jaws. The air itself crystallized as the blast tore across the cavern floor, turning everything it touched into frozen death. The ice beneath it cracked and split from the thermal shock.
Holden kept walking.
His Solar-Forged Sword appeared in his hand. He gripped it with both hands, and the blade ignited.
Hellfire Cleave.
A wave of white-hot crimson fire erupted from the sword in a massive arc, meeting the breath head-on.
FWOOOOOSH!
Fire and ice collided in the center of the cavern. Steam exploded outward in a blinding cloud. The thermal shockwave cracked the ice floor in every direction, sending jagged fissures racing across the cavern like lightning.
The Tyrant’s breath was powerful. Rank 3 powerful. Capable of freezing entire battlefields.
But Hellfire Cleave was Perfect Tier.
The crimson fire didn’t just hold the ice back. It consumed it. The Absolute Zero breath evaporated on contact. Holden’s fire carved a clean corridor straight through the blast, melting a path toward the beast.
The Tyrant’s eyes widened. It had never seen its breath countered.
It cut the attack short and lunged.
Holden was already moving.
Gale-Step.
He vanished from his position and reappeared above the Tyrant, Abyssal-Bone Wings flaring wide as he dropped onto the beast’s back. The ice armor was thick, but his Aether-Steel fingers found grip on the ridged spine plates.
The Tyrant thrashed. Its tail whipped across the cavern, smashing a crystal pillar to pieces. Its wings snapped open, trying to throw him off. It twisted its neck, jaws snapping at empty air behind it.
Holden held on with one hand and raised his sword with the other.
The base of the skull. Right where the spine met the head. The ice armor was thinnest there. The core pulsed deep in its chest. He needed it intact.
The Tyrant bucked wildly beneath him, slamming its own body against the cavern walls.
Holden raised the sword and drove it straight through the gap in the armor, sinking the Solar-Forged sword deep into the base of the skull. The blade cut through the neural cluster with precision.
The Tyrant froze.
Not from ice. From death.
Its wings locked mid-flap. Its jaw hung open. Its eyes went from blazing blue to dull and empty. The massive body listed to one side.
Then it fell.
CRASH!
Thirty feet of armored ice-wyvern slammed into the cavern floor, shaking the entire structure. Ice and rock rained from the ceiling. The frozen mist slowly began to dissipate.
Holden stood on the beast’s back, pulling his sword free with a clean motion.
"Target down."
Renna’s voice came from the tunnel entrance. "Already? We just got comfortable!"
"Forty-seven seconds," Emric said, sounding almost impressed despite himself.
Holden wiped the blade clean and dismissed it. Then he knelt beside the beast’s chest and pressed his palm against the ice armor. His Aether-Steel fingers found the thinnest point and pushed through, prying the plates apart with deliberate care.
The core was beautiful.
A sphere of deep, freezing blue. It pulsed with concentrated Glacial energy, so cold that frost crawled up his forearm the moment he touched it. He pulled it free carefully.

Holden stored the core and climbed down from the beast’s body.
Lyra was standing at the tunnel entrance, watching him. Her eyes moved from the massive corpse to him.
"You walked into its breath."
"I did."
"You didn’t even flinch."
Holden shrugged. "It was cold. I’ve had worse mornings."
Lyra stared at him. Then she shook her head, the faintest smile pulling at the corner of her lips. "You’re impossible."
Renna poked her head out from behind Emric. "Did he seriously just walk through an Absolute Zero blast?"
"From a Rank 3," Emric added quietly. "That shouldn’t be possible."
"Shouldn’t be," Holden agreed. "Was."
He pulled the Glacial Core from his inventory. The blue light washed across the cavern walls, painting everything in a soft, frozen glow.
Lyra’s eyes locked onto it.
"That core," she said quietly. "It’s pure."
"Pure enough for the Crucible." He looked at her. "This one’s yours."
Lyra held his gaze for a moment. Then she nodded.
"Let’s get to work."
