I Grind to Martial Saint

Chapter 295 - 256: Investigation

"Leader Liao Tu... how did you discover something had happened to the Cyan Tiger Tribe?"

Tuoba Ming, the leader of the Wild Wolf Tribe, asked in a grim voice.

Within the Taicang Mountain Range, the Wild Wolf Tribe, much like the Wuhuo Tribe, was a large tribe of several thousand people.

"I came today looking for some information..."

"I’d already visited several tribes this morning... I happened to arrive at the Cyan Tiger Tribe around noon, and that’s when I found... this."

Liao Tu replied, his voice heavy.

"So... the Cyan Tiger Tribe was likely attacked last night."

Tuoba Ming speculated.

"It must have been... To reduce the Cyan Tiger Tribe to this state overnight... It’s terrifying."

Liao Tu couldn’t help but say.

"I’ve already sent for the Black Dog Tribe... Let’s see if they can find any clues."

Tuoba Ming’s expression was grave.

The Black Dog Tribe was a vassal to the Wild Wolf Tribe and specialized in raising hounds.

Upon hearing this, the leaders and Priests from the various tribes could only wait patiently.

「After a while.」

A few men with dark complexions approached, leading a dozen lean, vicious-looking hounds.

"Greetings, everyone."

Quan Bei, the leader of the Black Dog Tribe, greeted the crowd while leading a vicious hound the size of a calf.

"Leader Quan... we’re counting on you for this matter."

Tuoba Ming said grimly.

"I can only try."

Quan Bei didn’t dare make any promises, offering a wry, helpless smile.

He led his hound into one of the houses of the Cyan Tiger Tribe.

Liao Tu, Tuoba Bei, and the others followed him inside.

Deep inside the house lay a corpse, mangled by countless bites.

Even so, many people still recognized the body as the Elder Priest of the Cyan Tiger Tribe.

The hound sniffed the Cyan Tiger Priest’s corpse a few times before it suddenly began to foam at the mouth. It collapsed, convulsing on the ground, as if it had inhaled something.

Before Quan Bei could treat it, the hound breathed its last.

"What’s going on?"

A tribal leader, utterly horrified, stumbled back several steps.

Many others covered their mouths and noses, afraid to breathe for fear of inhaling something noxious.

"First, drag this hound’s corpse outside."

"Pass the order down. Don’t let anyone touch the corpses of the Cyan Tiger Tribe."

An old man with a wizened face, holding a Wooden Staff, spoke in a low, grave voice.

Hearing this old man’s words, everyone immediately sprang into action.

The reason was that this man was Sang Qing, the Priest of the Hundred Gu Tribe.

Within Taicang Mountain, the Hundred Gu Tribe was small, numbering only a few hundred. It was considered a minor tribe.

But to many, the Hundred Gu Tribe was more terrifying than even the largest tribes.

Because its people were masters of refining all manner of venomous insects and toxic Gu.

The reason their population was so small was simply because many had died practicing the art of Gu refinement.

Quan Bei brought a rope, looped it around the dead hound’s head, and dragged it out of the room into an open space.

Sang Qing took out a small jar and placed it on the ground.

Soon, a brightly colored centipede crawled out of the jar.

It seemed to catch a scent. Without any guidance from Sang Qing, it crawled directly into the dead hound’s nose.

After a while, the centipede crawled out again.

But something was clearly wrong with it. It was incredibly lethargic, and it stopped moving completely before it could even make it back to the jar.

"Even my highly venomous centipede was poisoned to death..."

Sang Qing’s brows knitted together as he stared at the dead centipede.

He had spent a great deal of effort raising that centipede, and he never expected it to die so easily.

"It seems we can’t leave the Cyan Tiger Tribe’s village as it is... We have to burn it all!"

"Otherwise... this unknown, potent poison might spread and even affect us!"

Tuoba Ming said grimly.

He felt a small sense of relief, thankful they had discovered the bodies were poisonous before it was too late.

Otherwise, the consequences would have been dire.

Sang Qing heard him and agreed.

Right now, they had no way to determine what had been done to the bodies.

If anything, it was the toxin the corpses carried that terrified them.

Soon, the crowd sprang into action. A great fire was set, and the Cyan Tiger Tribe’s village burned until nothing but ash remained.

After another round of discussion, the members of the various tribes decided to return to their own territories for the time being and heighten their security.

They agreed to contact each other immediately if anything else occurred.

And so, Liao Tu returned to the Wuhuo Tribe with a few of his clansmen, his expression heavy.

He didn’t immediately spread the news about the Cyan Tiger Tribe. Instead, he sent someone to summon Han Yuan and Ding Zihu to his stone house.

When Han Yuan heard Liao Tu’s summons to the stone house, he assumed it was news about Chunyangzi.

But he hadn’t expected it to be about something else entirely.

"An entire mid-sized tribe... wiped out in a single night?!"

Han Yuan frowned.

"That’s right. And the way the people of the Cyan Tiger Tribe died was horrifying... Their bodies also carry some kind of terrible poison. You get poisoned just by touching them..."

Liao Tu said grimly.

Ding Zihu asked, "Are the bodies still there?"

"No... We just burned them all a little while ago!"

Liao Tu said, shaking his head.

"Based on my experience... something that could cause casualties on this scale... it’s probably an Evil Demon Seed working in the shadows."

"And not one that has just reawakened, but an Evil Demon Seed that has recovered some of its power."

Han Yuan stated calmly.

Generally, a newly reawakened Evil Demon Seed is still very weak and couldn’t possibly cause death on such a massive scale.

Liao Tu gave a wry smile. "The problem is... we have no way of knowing if it was an Evil Demon Seed. For all we know, it could have been some kind of terrifying poison."

The harsh environment of Taicang Mountain had given birth to countless venomous creatures.
