Chapter 287: 287:Asking for help.
Ravenna’s heart began pounding. They were finally back; help was here.
Silver could still be saved.
That thought gave her enough energy to sit upright.
"Antony."
"Yeah?"
"Don’t stop."
"I won’t."
The vehicle approached the entrance. The guards immediately recognized that they were returning from the valley. They were waved through after a brief inspection.
Ravenna barely waited for the vehicle to come to a complete stop before she opened the door. Antony barely managed to park before she was already running.
"Ravenna!"
He hurried after her.
She ignored him. Her eyes searched the observation centre.
There.
A group of Contractors was gathering near one of the larger structures. They were wearing equipment marked with the insignia of a subjugation team.
Ravenna recognized them immediately.
They had returned.
Her heart jumped. These were the people who could help.
She rushed toward them.
"Wait!"
Several Contractors turned. Ravenna stopped in front of them, breathing heavily. Her white hair was disheveled, her clothes were covered in dirt, and there were still traces of blood on her sword.
The people around her stared.
One of them frowned.
"Who are you?"
Ravenna swallowed.
"Please."
Her voice trembled.
"I need your help."
The Contractor looked at her.
"What happened?"
"My companion." She struggled to get the words out. "He’s trapped."
Antony arrived behind her. He slowed when he saw Ravenna’s expression.
Ravenna continued.
"We were attacked inside the cave. The entrance collapsed. He’s still inside."
The Contractors exchanged looks. Ravenna clasped her hands together.
"Please." Her voice broke. "He’s still alive."
One of the Contractors sighed.
"Where?"
"Death Row Valley."
"Where in the valley?"
Ravenna gave them the location. The expression of the Contractor immediately changed.
"That’s too deep."
"You can go there."
"Not now."
"Please." Ravenna’s eyes filled with tears. "He’s still there."
The Contractor shook his head.
"We’ve just returned."
"I’ll pay." She reached for her belongings. "I can pay you."
The Contractor stared at her.
"Miss, you don’t understand."
Ravenna’s voice became desperate.
"Then tell me what I have to do."
The Contractor looked toward his companions.
One of them sighed.
"You should be thankful you made it out."
Ravenna froze.
"What?"
"The person you’re talking about is probably dead."
Her face went completely pale.
"No."
"That area isn’t somewhere we can casually enter."
"No."
"We can’t send a team after every Contractor who gets trapped."
Ravenna shook her head.
"He’s not dead."
The Contractor frowned.
"You don’t know that."
Ravenna’s tears finally fell.
"He promised me."
The Contractor stared at her. Ravenna wiped her face, but more tears followed.
"He told me he would come back."
The Contractor didn’t know what to say. Antony stepped beside her.
"Ravenna."
She looked at him. His expression was unusually serious.
"Let’s find someone in charge, they can help us."
Ravenna nodded but she didn’t take her eyes off the subjugation team.
"Please." Her voice was almost a whisper. "Just help him."
Ravenna stood in the middle of the observation centre with tears still running down her cheeks, staring at the subjugation team as though sheer determination could force them to change their minds.
The people around them continued moving through the military facility, Contractors carrying equipment, administrators checking records, and support personnel unloading containers from vehicles, yet Ravenna felt completely detached from everything happening around her.
All she could think about was the cave. Silver was still down there. Somewhere beneath all that stone, beneath the tunnels and the collapsed passages, he was either fighting to survive or lying there alone, and every second they spent standing here was another second he could be losing blood.
"Please," she said again. "You don’t have to send the entire team. Just send someone who can reach him."
One of the Rank Five Contractors finally turned back to look at her and shook his head. "It isn’t that simple."
"Then make it simple."
"Ravenna, come on."
Antony’s voice was quiet behind her, but she didn’t turn.
"I can pay."
"You’ve already said that."
"I’ll pay whatever you want."
The Contractor looked at her with an uncomfortable expression. "Money isn’t the issue. We just came back from the deeper section. We’re exhausted, and we have an assignment to complete. We can’t immediately turn around and head back into Death Row Valley because one person was left behind."
"He’s not just one person."
Her voice cracked.
The Contractor remained silent.
"He’s my boyfriend."
The words came out more desperately than Ravenna intended. Her fingers tightened around the tracker in her hand.
"He is my partner. He is the person I was travelling with. You can’t just tell me to leave him there."
Another member of the subjugation team sighed. "We’re not telling you that because we don’t care. We’re telling you because you don’t understand the situation. The area you’re describing is extremely dangerous. If the cave collapsed the way you say it did, even finding an alternative entrance could take days. If there are secondary collapses, it could take even longer."
"Then start looking."
"With what team?"
Ravenna fell silent.
The Contractor continued, his voice becoming more practical. "We don’t have enough people available to immediately conduct a rescue operation. The people who went into the deeper valley are returning with materials that need to be delivered to Alpha Three. We have orders."
"How long?" He hesitated. "At least several weeks before a proper team could be assembled."
Ravenna’s face drained of colour.
"Weeks?"
"Possibly longer."
"He’s injured."
The Contractor looked at her.
"You don’t know how badly... I saw him." Ravenna’s voice trembled. "He was injured before the cave collapsed. He was already exhausted. He used his abilities too much, and then the queen attacked him."
The Contractor frowned at that.
"Queen?"
"Yes."
"What rank?"
Ravenna swallowed.
"Six."
The nearby Contractors exchanged glances. One of them let out a low whistle.
"A Rank Six?"
Ravenna nodded.
"And he fought it?"
"He was trying to get us out."
The Contractor’s expression changed slightly.
"Then his chances aren’t good."
Ravenna stared at him.
"Don’t."
