Chapter 291: 291:Possibilities.

Ravenna walked a short distance away from the vehicles. She needed air, a lot of air.

The sky was slowly darkening.

She looked toward the direction they had come from. Death Row Valley was no longer visible, yet she knew it was somewhere behind them.

She wondered whether Silver could see the sky, if he had found a safe place to rest, and if he was hungry. The thought made her chest ache.

"Silver..." she whispered his name.

There was no answer.

She looked down at the tracker; still nothing. Ravenna turned it off. This time, she didn’t turn it back on.

She walked toward one of the larger military vehicles instead. There was a contractor standing beside it.

He looked around late twenties, perhaps slightly older, and wore the equipment of one of the support members attached to the subjugation group.

Ravenna hesitated.

"Excuse me."

The Contractor turned.

"Yes?"

"Can I ask you something?"

"Sure."

Ravenna glanced toward the large lorry beside them.

She had noticed something earlier. There had been movement inside. Something had struck the metal wall while they were driving.

She pointed toward it.

"What is inside that vehicle?"

The Contractor looked at the lorry, then he looked back at her.

"That?"

"Yes."

He hesitated.

"It’s one of the Retrieval team’s vehicles."

"Retrieval team?"

"Yeah."

Ravenna frowned.

"What are they retrieving?"

The Contractor scratched his cheek.

"Honestly?" He lowered his voice. "We don’t really know."

Ravenna’s eyebrows rose.

"You don’t know?"

"No." He glanced around before continuing. "I think something escaped. This things happen atleast three times a year. It’s quite common."

Ravenna only caught one word from all of that.

"Something?"

"An experiment... I think."

Ravenna stared at him.

"An experiment?"

"That’s what I heard."

The Contractor shrugged.

"Apparently something was being held in one of the research facilities around the sanctuary. It escaped containment, and the Retrieval team was sent to recover it."

Ravenna looked at the lorry again. There was another faint thump from inside.

Her eyes narrowed.

"What kind of experiment?"

The Contractor gave an awkward smile.

"That’s the problem."

He shook his head.

"Nobody tells us this shit."

"But you’re tasked with getting it back?"

"Not even us, only the subjugation will know."

Ravenna found that unsettling.

"Is it dangerous?"

The Contractor laughed nervously.

"If it wasn’t, they wouldn’t have sent a Retrieval team."

Another sound came from inside the lorry. This time it was louder. Ravenna instinctively stepped backward.

The Contractor noticed.

"Don’t worry." He smiled. "Whatever it is, they’ve got it contained. The alloys they use on this containers are mixed with higher Teired beast materials. Those materials are hard enough to hold a lot of this things. I can even take a bomb."

Ravenna wasn’t entirely convinced. She looked at the lorry for another few seconds, then she remembered Silver.

She turned toward the Contractor again.

"Can I ask you something else?"

"Sure."

"About Death Row Valley."

The Contractor’s expression became more serious.

"What about it?"

"My companion is trapped there."

The Contractor’s eyes widened slightly.

"You’re the girl from earlier. People in the camp were talking about you."

Ravenna nodded.

"I heard about what happened."

"He’s still alive."

The words came out immediately.

The Contractor studied her.

"I hope so."

"You don’t sound convinced either."

"Nobody can be certain."

Ravenna lowered her gaze.

"He was trapped underground with a Rank Six worm queen."

The Contractor’s expression became thoughtful.

"The queen?"

"Yes."

"That’s bad."

Ravenna’s hands tightened.

"But I was told earlier that there might still be hope."

The Contractor nodded.

"There is."

Ravenna looked up. He leaned against the side of the vehicle.

"Anyone knows that the worm queen has terrible eyesight and her sense of smell isn’t great either. If your companion is smart, he might be able to exploit that."

Ravenna nodded.

"He has really good Senses."

The Contractor looked surprised.

"A sensory related ability?"

"Yes."

"Then that’s useful."

Ravenna’s eyes brightened slightly.

The Contractor continued.

"But there’s another problem."

"The tunnels."

"Exactly." He pointed toward the distant darkness. "Even if he survives the queen, getting out will be difficult. Those tunnels can extend much farther than people realize."

Ravenna listened carefully.

"Could a rescue team enter?"

"Eventually."

"When?"

The Contractor sighed.

"That’s complicated."

Ravenna’s expression fell.

"Killing a Rank Six beast is already difficult enough." He continued. "Doing it underground is worse. You can’t surround it properly. You can’t easily evacuate injured people. You don’t know where the creature will emerge from, and if it decides the area is compromised, it might abandon its current nest and move somewhere else."

Ravenna stared at him.

"It could leave?"

"Of course." He nodded. "Especially after everything that happened."

Ravenna’s heart sank.

"So even if the Association sends a rescue team..."

"They might not find the queen."

"Or Silver."

"Exactly."

Ravenna looked toward the ground. The Contractor softened his voice.

"That doesn’t mean he’s dead."

Ravenna looked up.

"It doesn’t?"

"No." He shook his head. "It just means you have to hold onto whatever hope you can."

Ravenna nodded slowly. For the first time since the cave collapsed, someone had explained the situation without simply telling her to give up.

The Contractor glanced toward the lorry, then back at her.

"If he’s as capable as you say, maybe he’ll surprise everyone."

Ravenna’s eyes became moist again.

"He always does."

The Contractor smiled.

"Then believe in him."

Ravenna looked toward the direction of Death Row Valley. Her hand slowly closed around the tracker.

"I will."

Behind them, another heavy thump came from inside the lorry. Ravenna glanced toward it.

The Contractor sighed.

"Hopefully that thing doesn’t escape again."

Ravenna managed a faint smile.

"Hopefully."

The two remained there for another moment before Ravenna returned to her vehicle.

Antony was sitting on the hood. He looked at her.

"Made a friend?"

"No."

"That’s disappointing."

"He told me Silver might still be alive."

Antony’s expression softened.

"See?"

Ravenna nodded.

"There’s still a chance."

Antony looked toward the dark horizon.

"Then we’ll use that chance."

Ravenna climbed into the passenger seat. Surprisingly, she didn’t immediately check the tracker; instead, she looked through the windshield.

Somewhere beneath all the uncertainty, one thought remained stubbornly alive. Silver had survived impossible situations before, he could survive this one too.

He had to.

Outside, the night settled over the convoy. And while the military personnel prepared their camp, something inside the nearby lorry shifted again.

Ravenna heard the faint metallic impact.

She turned her head.

For a moment, she wondered what exactly Alpha Three had been keeping inside that vehicle, then her thoughts returned to Silver.

And the strange creature in the lorry became the least important mystery in her mind.
