Chapter 457: Chapter 456: The Path to Strength
The moment he walked in, Colin spotted Kase and Orelia sitting in a corner of the tavern.
Just as Colin was walking over to them, Old Black Heart, who was standing behind the counter, called out, "Colin, we got some lobster from the docks today. Want some?"
"Hey! Old Black Heart, didn’t you say you were sold out? You old bastard," a patron at a nearby table cursed.
Old Black Heart retorted without missing a beat, "Can your treatment even compare to the man who took down a dragon?"
"Alright, I’ll have one. And Old Black Heart, stop going on about that," Colin said, waving to the tavern owner. He then turned to the patron with a smile and said, "Sorry about that, pal."
The man muttered something under his breath before lowering his head and starting to gnaw on his roasted pork knuckle.
Colin sat down next to Kase and the others. "Well, we have to escort Albert to his territory tomorrow. You guys really showed up at the last minute."
"If I could’ve gone to study in that big, imposing Great Black Tower, I definitely wouldn’t have stayed at the tribe for so long," Kase said with a laugh. "I finally got a clear answer on my trip back, though. My ancestors are really watching over me. As long as I can create more legends, the Power of my ancestors will grow stronger."
"I can’t believe you’re only just now remembering to ask about something so important," Colin said, a little exasperated.
"Even without that, I can still get stronger just by training. It would just be a little slower, is all," Kase said, full of emotion. "Thinking about it this way, my dad and mom are probably still watching me. I won’t do anything to make them ashamed."
Colin reasoned, based on the game design logic from his past life, "If you ask me, this might have something to do with your Ancestor Stones. Maybe the more Ancestor Stones you have, the stronger you’ll get."
"Maybe," Kase said, taking a swig of beer. "Enough with all that nonsense. Chill my beer for me. I really wish my ancestors could do stuff like this."
’If your ancestors heard you say that, they’d probably come back to life just to punch you a couple of times.’
As he grumbled internally, Colin snapped his fingers, using the Water Manipulation enchantment on his ring to conjure a few ice cubes in Kase’s beer.
Just then, a waitress brought over the creamy lobster soup.
A huge lobster tail, as thick as a wrist, lay coiled in the center of the plate, garnished with a few sprigs of rosemary. A large piece of bread and several shucked oysters were placed on the edge of the plate.
Colin used his knife to cut off a piece of the lobster tail, then lifted it to his mouth with the tip of the blade.
The first sensation was the rich flavor of butter, immediately followed by the aroma of onions and spices. Colin chewed the lobster meat twice, and as the firm, springy morsel burst in his mouth, the inherent fresh sweetness of the lobster finally revealed itself.
Colin took a sip of beer to wash down the flavors.
’I have to say, the best part about living in a coastal city is the cheap seafood.’
Just then, Orelia lifted her chin and coughed lightly twice.
Then, she announced rather proudly, "Mr. Colin, I can cast Tier Three Divine Skills now."
"Really? That’s great news," Colin said with a smile. "A lot of Tier Three Divine Skills are very useful."
Orelia quickly asked, "Mr. Colin, do you have any advice on which Divine Arts I should prepare?"
"You should just stick to what you’re used to. I’m not really familiar with a Priest’s casting process or all the different Divine Arts," Colin said, dipping his bread into the lobster soup. "Don’t worry, this mission isn’t too difficult."
"Really?" Orelia asked.
"Albert is the heir to the Weston Clan. He’ll definitely have an entire caravan with him on his way back to his territory. Even the dumbest Ogre wouldn’t try to attack a fully armed noble’s caravan."
Colin took a big bite of his bread and said, "We’ll have plenty of time to practice. I’m planning on bringing my tools anyway, see if I can’t optimize my Night Vision Lenses on the road."
At that, Kase, who was sitting next to him, glanced up.
"Kase, you got something to say?" Colin asked, holding his bread. "As far as I’m concerned, this trip should be no problem."
"So what time are we meeting up tomorrow?" Kase asked.
"I’ll come get you when it’s time. We’re all living in the same apartment now, anyway." Colin then added, "Oh, right. We can finally go buy some horses this time."
Kase grabbed the food in front of him, shoved it into his mouth, chewed a couple of times, and swallowed it with a GULP. Then he urged, "Then what are we waiting for? Let’s go!"
"What’s the rush? I still have to enjoy my lobster feast," Colin said.
With Kase hurrying him along, he was forced to quickly finish his meal.
Since this was a matter for the whole team, Colin and the others stopped by the Dwarves’ sewers to pick up Ale and Dorn. The large group then headed for the pastures outside Thousand Masts City.
It was worth mentioning that the farmlands and pastures surrounding Thousand Masts City didn’t operate on the typical manor system.
Most of the people who worked here were criminals who had broken the law in the city, and the administrators of these lands were mostly influential noble families from within the city walls.
For example, the pasture they were now heading to belonged to the Valenza family.
As they walked along the country path, Colin looked at Dorn and asked, "What have you been up to lately?"
"Took a look around the Undercity. Nothing much to report," Dorn said, raising his hands and clasping them lightly behind his head. "But I have to thank you for the boots. They work great. I haven’t heard my own footsteps in a long time."
"That’s good," Colin said, glancing at Dorn’s expression.
He couldn’t understand why Dorn kept emphasizing the fact that they had given him equipment, as if it were some rare occurrence.
’But then again,’ Colin thought, ’the guy really didn’t seem to have a single piece of Magic Equipment on him when we first met.’
’Considering his skills, that was indeed rather strange.’
A while later, the group arrived at the main gate of the pasture.
The entire pasture was enclosed by a wooden fence, surrounding a vast grassy field with only a few small huts inside, making it feel quite spacious.
Several ranch hands sitting on the fence spotted Colin’s group approaching and immediately shouted, "Hey! Who are you people?!"
Then, Colin heard someone else over there say, "Look, it’s that weird armor. It’s the Dragon Slayer from the newspaper a few weeks ago."
Colin sighed and shouted, "I’m here to buy horses!"
The ranch hands quickly turned and shouted toward the middle of the field. A figure on a fine horse in the center of the pasture began to ride toward them.
By the time the figure reached the fence, Colin and his group had also made their way to it.
