Chapter 473: Chapter 472: Item Crafting
"Mog, where are you going?" Dorn shouted, but he didn’t get a response.
Orelia, holding a bowl of stew, asked quizzically, "Isn’t Mr. Mog going to eat? It’s his favorite thing to do."
Colin took the stew from Ale and looked over at Mog in the distance.
The big fellow rushed behind a tree trunk, pulled out a clean handkerchief, and picked a black mushroom from the ground. He carefully wrapped it in the handkerchief before stuffing it into his pocket.
"I’ve never in my life seen an Ogre you could describe as ’careful’," Dorn said, sounding thoroughly amazed. "I have to admit, today has been a real eye-opener."
Perhaps because they had fought side-by-side, Mog had been getting along fairly well with the team lately. He was even starting to talk a lot more.
When Mog came over, Colin asked, "What are you collecting those mushrooms for, Mog?"
"Mog’s master told Mog to find them. Mog has to help Master mix potions," Mog said, taking the stew from Dorn.
The others exchanged a look.
Colin shrugged, as if to say he hadn’t meant to bring up such a sensitive topic.
Some Casters did indeed purchase creatures like Ogres, raising them from a young age as enslaved guards.
Colin had even heard that a White Dragon Egg once appeared on the black market in Thousand Masts City. Many Casters and nobles would spend a fortune for one, just for the chance to raise a White Dragon War Beast.
That would also explain why Mog could communicate so fluently.
"What?" Mog sensed the strange atmosphere and glanced at the others before slurping a mouthful of stew.
Colin cleared his throat. "So, how about we talk about the stew instead?"
"Mog’s master is a powerful master. He can do Cantrips, just like you two little ones." Unwilling to let the topic die, Mog pointed at Colin and Ale. "Mog doesn’t want to make you angry, but Mog’s master is definitely more powerful than you."
Before anyone else could respond, the Ogre continued on his own tangent, muttering, "Only a master like that is qualified to call Mog a fool. In fact, Mog is smart."
"That must be difficult, Mr. Mog," Orelia said sympathetically.
"Difficult? Why difficult?" Mog asked. "Mog used to live with Master. Do a good job, get meat. Do a bad job, get hit. Just like a lot of people."
"Most people aren’t like that," Dorn said.
"Haven’t you ever thought about leaving your master? Living a truly free life?" Orelia couldn’t bear it. "A good... sir, like you, an Ogre, shouldn’t be treated that way."
"Truly free?"
The phrase seemed to flip a switch in the Ogre’s mind. He sat stunned for a moment, thinking it over carefully.
Finally, he said in a low, rumbling voice, "Mog doesn’t want freedom. Mog absolutely cannot be free."
"Albert, pour me a cup of coffee," Colin said.
"Ah, oh!" Albert quickly grabbed a coffee cup and poured him a full cup, effectively ending the conversation.
Colin sipped the liquid. He could even taste milk and sugar; it really wasn’t any different from a normal cup of coffee.
After finishing breakfast, the caravan set off again.
Colin took out the Casting Materials he had bought in the last village and turned to Kase. "Kase, let me have your arrows."
"What are you doing?"
Sitting at the front of the cart, Kase took off his Quiver as he spoke and handed it over.
"Just watch," Colin said, taking out the materials he had bought in the last town: a small vial of activating essential oil worth two Gold Coins.
Colin mixed the essential oil with some iron filings, then carefully coated the head of an Arrow with the mixture. At the same time, he began to softly chant the Spell for **Shield**.
As he chanted the Spell, Colin slowly infused Magic Power into the arrowhead.
The mixture of iron filings and essential oil on the arrowhead began to visibly solidify, eventually forming a hard, white shell.
Sensing his work was complete, Colin carefully examined the Arrow in his hand.
[Impact Shot / Ordinary Level Magical Ammunition]
[Force Field Impact: Any creature struck by this Arrow will suffer an impact and may be knocked down.]
After learning to craft Ordinary Magical Items, Colin had also looked through Donkexes’s crafting notes in his spare time. He’d carefully reviewed the equipment he could make based on the types of Magic he knew.
The impact shot was one such item.
Besides using **Shield**, it could also be crafted with **Magic Missile**. As long as one knew a Low Tier Force Field spell, they could successfully make one.
Colin placed the finished Arrow back in the Quiver, then took out another one and began the process again.
These "impact shots" were single-use items, so Colin’s Spiritual Power could sustain many such enchanted arrows at once.
After making about twenty arrows, Colin felt his mind grow sluggish. He knew then that his Spiritual Power for maintaining these Magic Items was depleted.
’These twenty arrows are equivalent to about one Ordinary Level Magic Item,’ Colin thought. ’That means I should be able to maintain two Ordinary Level Magic Items at once.’
Having reached his conclusion, he handed the items to Kase. "This type of Arrow can knock things down on impact. It’s a special Magic Item."
"When did you learn a Shaman’s tricks, my friend?" Kase asked, perplexed.
He blinked, raised his bow, and fired an Arrow straight into the canopy above.
The Arrow carved a perfect arc through the air, striking a black raven perched on a branch with pinpoint accuracy.
The instant the Arrow hit, there was a faint THUD. The raven was sent flying, tumbling a great distance before it fell to the ground.
"Nice shot!" "Dead-on!"
The Mercenaries up front hooted and cheered.
"This thing’s pretty useful," Kase said with a wide grin.
Colin said flatly, "But they’re single-use. You just shot away a Silver Coin."
The smile vanished from Kase’s face in an instant. His expression crumpled, as if someone had just stabbed him for no reason.
-----------------
About a month passed after that day.
After the last few days of hurried travel, their pace had slowed considerably.
The rhythm of their journey remained the same: follow the main road to the red-brick forest villages to resupply, then press on.
To be honest, the only sights along the way were green leaves and tall tree trunks. Colin personally felt it was nearly as boring as a long sea voyage.
Colin sat in the swaying cart, reviewing his Magic as he went.
Suddenly, a faint ray of sunlight shone on his face.
The warmth made Colin yawn.
He looked up. The thick canopy that had loomed overhead was gone, vanished without a trace.
Looking back, the Supreme Forest had been left far behind.
Colin turned to look forward again. His view opened up completely.
