Chapter 557: Chapter 557: Don’t Scare Me
The couple sat at the dining table as the aroma of noodles drifted through the air.
Claire took a few bites of her noodles and looked up at her husband’s incredibly handsome face. "Adrian, you should eat more."
"I’ll finish what’s left in the pot," Adrian Quincy promised.
Claire Sinclair smiled in satisfaction. "See that you do."
Adrian Quincy nodded. Of course, he would do what he promised her.
After they finished their noodles, Claire Sinclair wanted to clear the table, but her husband insisted she go upstairs and take a shower first.
Claire Sinclair couldn’t argue with him, so she obediently went into the bathroom.
When she came out of the shower, she saw him already sitting on the bed. He was holding a tablet, completely engrossed in whatever was on the screen.
Claire Sinclair climbed onto the bed and slipped under the covers. She wrapped an arm around his and rested her head on his shoulder, her eyes falling on the tablet in his hands.
"What are you looking at?"
"Some old news."
"What kind of old news?" Claire Sinclair was curious. She quickly scanned the content on the tablet. It seemed to be about a haunted residential community.
Adrian Quincy said calmly, "Like The Bitter Sea, Woodforest Community has been abandoned for seven or eight years. Both places are about to be cleared out."
"Woodforest Community?"
"Someone’s been faking a haunting there, so no one dares to go inside. Even developers are steering clear."
Claire Sinclair’s interest was suddenly piqued. "The way you say that, it makes me want to go see what kind of ’ghost’ this is."
Adrian Quincy turned to look her in the eye. "You’re not afraid?"
"What’s there to be afraid of? Ghosts aren’t real."
"Aiden Howkins went in once and ran out terrified. He had nightmares for days afterward. Every single night, he dreamed a faceless woman wanted to marry him. Every night, the exact same dream."
Adrian Quincy put special emphasis on those last few words.
Claire Sinclair was suddenly at a loss for words.
’A tough guy like Aiden Howkins, scared of ghosts?’
Adrian Quincy added, "Before he went in, he was a skeptic, just like you."
"Hey... don’t try to scare me." Claire Sinclair was starting to get spooked. She wasn’t afraid of ghosts, per se, but she was afraid of things that science couldn’t explain.
For example, why would Aiden Howkins have the same dream for several days in a row after coming out of that place?
Adrian Quincy set the tablet aside, then pulled her down to lie with him. "Don’t think about it. Let’s get some sleep."
Claire Sinclair’s heart started to pound. "I feel a chill running down my back."
Adrian Quincy immediately pulled the covers up higher around her. "Tuck yourself in."
"No, I mean I’ve got the chills. It’s not because I’m cold."
"I’m here. Don’t be afraid."
"But you don’t know how to catch ghosts."
A helpless smile touched Adrian Quincy’s lips. "Claire, you just said ghosts aren’t real."
Claire Sinclair muttered under her breath, "There weren’t any ghosts until you scared one into existence. Can you wait for me to fall asleep before you do? I’m scared."
But then she had another thought and changed her tune. "No, that won’t work. What if I fall asleep and you sneak out of bed to work? You’re always working late behind my back."
"Claire, don’t overthink it. We’ll go to sleep together."
"Mmm..." Claire Sinclair tried to close her eyes, but her mind was immediately flooded with all sorts of unsettling thoughts.
’The faceless ghost...’
’Oh god!’
Claire Sinclair’s eyes snapped open, and she instinctively tightened her grip on his arm. "I’m still scared."
"If you’re scared, how about we do something else?"
"Like what?"
The answer was self-evident.
-
The next day, Claire Sinclair climbed out of bed, her body aching all over. Her husband was no longer in the room, having left only a note for her on the bedside table.
