Chapter 590: Chapter 590: The Twins Are Gone
Adrian was silent for a moment before saying in a deep voice, "It was two gestational sacs."
Two gestational sacs...
It felt as if Claire’s world was collapsing in that very moment.
’So she hadn’t just lost one child, but two...’
’Why did it have to be this way?’
’Aren’t the chances of having twins supposed to be low? Even though my sister and I are twins, it didn’t have to be passed down like this!’
"I’m so useless," Claire finally managed to say after a long silence, fresh tears streaming down her face as she spoke.
Adrian quickly reassured her. "Claire, this isn’t your fault. Don’t blame yourself. We’ll have another chance in the future."
"But the twins... they’re gone..." Claire broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. A sharp pain pierced her chest, making it almost impossible to breathe.
Realization dawned on Adrian. He said in a deep voice, "I’m coming back to you now, Claire. Wait for me."
"But... but aren’t you on a mission?"
"I overestimated my ability to stay calm. When you’re like this, I can’t think straight. I’ll let the others handle it."
"Does that mean I shouldn’t have bothered you?"
"You need me," Adrian said, and that was all.
The guilt in Claire’s heart evaporated.
’She needed him. She would just act as a wife who needed her husband. She’d let herself be selfish this one time, and never again.’
Although he’d promised to return, Claire still ended up waiting for three hours. Only when he finally arrived did she realize just how far away he had been.
Adrian returned travel-worn and dusty. Before he even had a chance to wash up, Claire rushed to embrace him.
"Adrian..." She simply held him, seeking a sense of security in his arms.
Adrian patted her on the shoulder. He wanted to go take a shower first, but he couldn’t bring himself to push the distraught woman away, so he simply let her hold him.
"Claire, it’s okay. I’m back now."
"I... I..."
Unsure of how to begin, Claire pulled out of his embrace and ran into the bathroom. She came back with the two pregnancy tests she hadn’t thrown away and presented them to him.
"Um... I lied to you. I... I already took the tests."
Adrian glanced at the identical lines on both tests, his brow furrowing slightly.
He finally understood the source of her anxiety.
"Claire, it looks like our family is about to grow," he said softly, pulling her into his arms without another word.
Claire nestled quietly in his arms, listening to his steady heartbeat. She couldn’t help but ask, "Aren’t you happy?"
"I’m very much looking forward to it."
"But... you don’t seem to be reacting at all."
A faint smile touched Adrian’s lips. "Do you need me to jump for joy for you to believe I’m happy?"
"Uh, no..." Claire couldn’t possibly imagine him jumping for joy. That just wasn’t his personality.
"We’ll go to the hospital for a check-up tomorrow."
"A hospital here? Can we trust them?"
Adrian lowered his gaze to his wife’s tear-filled eyes, still clouded with anxiety. "Why wouldn’t we be able to?"
"This whole city has been tainted by the Miracle Health Clinic. I don’t want to get a check-up in a place like this. Let’s wait until we’re back in Aethelgard. All your people are there, and I’ll feel safer."
Adrian nodded. "Alright. We’ll do as you say."
"I’m so hungry now," Claire said, rubbing her stomach. She hadn’t had an appetite earlier and had told them to clear the food away.
Adrian led her to the dining room and had her sit down. Then, he instructed one of his own men to go to the hotel kitchen and cook for them personally.
Keeping his wife’s pregnancy in mind, Adrian specifically instructed his subordinate to avoid any ingredients that could be harmful during pregnancy.
