Hermione rushed through the corridors, her presence drawing plenty of curious glances from those she passed, though she never once looked back. The soft click of her sandals echoed steadily against the polished marble floor as she wove her way forward, turning a final corner before climbing the stairs that led up toward the library.
It was still early, the library only just having opened for the day, the librarian busy arranging books along the shelves with the help of a few cleaners. She glanced up briefly the moment Hermione barged in without so much as a word of greeting, only shaking her head in mild exasperation.
"Kids these days. Shish, honestly."
Slipping quietly between the shelves, Hermione waited as a portal flared open beside her, releasing a small cat with striking ginger fur and a bushy, kite shaped tail. It landed lightly on her shoulder, its small body trembling as it let out a nervous hiss. Hermione gently stroked its fur, easing the tension from its frame.
The gentle gesture quickly coaxed a soft purr from the cat. With that, Hermione tore a blank page free from a nearby notebook and set it down before Crookshanks, who fluttered eagerly around it. The cat’s small forelimbs moved delicately across the paper’s surface, and slowly, something resembling shimmering, glittering ink began forming a faint, hazy image across it.
Hermione’s eyes widened the moment the image finally took shape. A strange, vivid flash cut suddenly through her mind, almost like a speeding train tearing past, the exact kind of reaction she normally only experienced while dreaming. She needed a quiet moment alone now, time enough to properly make sense of whatever had just surfaced. It was Crookshanks who had triggered this particular reaction, and this was far from the first time either. It had been happening on and off since her early childhood.
Still, she had always kept quiet about it, too afraid of how much might change if she ever let the truth slip out.

Mark made his way down the school corridor toward his classroom, hands tucked casually into his pockets, bag slung over one shoulder. His expression remained entirely unchanged despite the mixture of curious, wary faces watching him pass along the way.
A brief silence settled over the hallway before the whispers began, students murmuring among themselves, gossiping quietly about him. Not everyone joined in, though.
"Now that I think about it, I haven’t seen him around in a while, which probably means..." A freshman, one of the students who had witnessed the awakening ceremony firsthand, muttered to his friends while pointing in Mark’s direction, only to catch a glance in return. This time, the look Mark gave him carried real, undeniable weight.
It was the kind of gaze that belonged to someone who had faced genuine, life threatening danger, something far removed from anything taught in an ordinary classroom. It left the unmistakable impression that he had lived through something entirely different from the rest of them.
That alone was enough to silence the freshman and his friends instantly, a cold shiver crawling down each of their spines. Mark hadn’t set out to look particularly intimidating toward the boy or his group, but if it helped put an end to the constant chatter about him, he was perfectly fine with the outcome.
Still, his effect on the wider crowd amounted to little more than a single drop in a much larger ocean, as more voices continued drifting toward him from every direction, one after another like rolling waves.
"He’s back. I told you he hadn’t been around for the last four days. My guess is he got pulled in for some kind of readjustment programme through the authorities," a girl with a nose piercing whispered to her best friend nearby.
"Readjustment programmes are for broken summoners, or ones with dangerously high potential, the kind at risk of being consumed by their own hunger for influence and power. I heard they even alter your mind a little during the process," someone else added knowingly.
"Ugh, I honestly thought he was gone for good. Why’s he even still here?"
"Guys, relax. Don’t be too harsh on him. He’s just figuring things out as a new summoner."
"Screw off, seriously!"
"He literally wrecked the entire Grand Hall and nearly got a bunch of people killed!"
"If anyone’s actually qualified to weigh in on this, it’s the headmaster, not us. That’s his call to make, not ours."
All of it washed past Mark like distant noise beneath deep water, and he continued walking forward without sparing any of them a second glance. He had already noticed that reacting outwardly, exactly what they seemed to want, only encouraged the disruption further.
Then his path was suddenly blocked by a familiar face. A tired sigh slipped from his lips as he finally pulled his hands free from his pockets. Standing in his way were Roman and Max, both cracking their knuckles with clear menace.
Kai stood a short distance behind them, leaning casually against the wall while a freshman girl knelt nearby, polishing his shoes with her own handkerchief. His expression remained bored and detached as he shot Mark an unreadable glance.
"If Hermione hadn’t left, this would’ve been a lot easier to avoid," Mark muttered under his breath, coming to a full stop.
"What was that? Were you seriously just cursing at us? I saw your mouth move!" Max stepped forward aggressively, Roman falling in step right behind him. Kai simply pretended not to notice the scene unfolding nearby.
"Idiots. They don’t even know what I actually said. Yeah, that’s right, you’re both idiots," Mark said, unable to hold back any longer. He was tired of putting up with this kind of treatment, and now that he was fully capable of handling it, he had no reason left to hesitate.
Max lost what little restraint he had left, lunging forward like a predator finally released. Months of pent up frustration over unresolved history boiled up inside his chest the instant he laid eyes on Mark, whose calm, unreadable expression only made things worse.
He roared, throwing a punch aimed straight at Mark’s face with the force of a falling meteor. But Mark simply tilted his head to the side, feeling the rush of displaced air sweep harmlessly past him. He countered instantly with a front kick that sent Max flying backward toward Roman, who barely managed to dodge out of the way with a quick, leaping sidestep.
Max rolled several times across the floor before friction finally brought him to a stop, landing right at Kai’s feet, drawing a startled whimper from the freshman girl still crouched there. His eyes widened in surprise as he glanced back toward Mark.
Roman, unlike Max, didn’t charge in blindly. Instead, he seized Mark in a tight grip, slamming his back hard against the nearby wall, the impact cracking the surface behind him. Mark’s emerald green eyes gleamed sharply, reflecting Roman’s raised fist as it swung back, already loaded for a heavy, decisive blow.
The punch landed squarely against his face with the force of a swinging hammer. Several onlookers gasped in shock at the sound alone, the sheer brutality of the impact echoing loudly down the corridor.
A heavy, deafening silence settled over the hallway, the kind that seemed to sink straight into the soul. Everyone froze in place, watching intently, waiting to see what would happen next.
Even Roman remained still, fist still tightly wound in Mark’s collar, his expression steady and confident, bolstered by the crowd of witnesses gathered around them.
"Are you done? Try again." Mark’s words left several students blinking in stunned disbelief.
Roman gritted his teeth, a vein pulsing visibly at his temple, before delivering another punch, then another, then another. Three wet, heavy strikes landing one right after the other.
"Hit me again," Mark said, his voice growing steadily heavier.
Boom. Boom. Boom. The blows came again, harder this time.
"Hit me again." Mark’s eyes carried real weight now as he issued the command once more. Something about that gaze unsettled Roman deeply, yet he swung anyway. Boom. Boom. Boom.
"Hit. Me. Again." Mark’s voice remained steady, and it was only then that Roman finally noticed something troubling, his blows had left barely a mark, no real bruising forming anywhere across Mark’s body.
"Hit me again." Mark’s hands curled into tight, controlled fists as a powerful aura suddenly burst outward from his body. Roman felt himself shrink instinctively beneath that overwhelming presence, his body trembling faintly. He genuinely could not believe what he was witnessing.
Mark’s eyes gleamed sharply. "Hit me again." His tone remained calm and casual, which somehow made the demand feel even more unsettling than before.
Roman hesitated for a long, tense moment before finally releasing his grip on Mark’s collar, stumbling backward as he blinked rapidly, still trying to process what had just happened. His breathing came heavy and ragged, as though he had been the one taking the beating all along. He simply could not believe it.
He turned and walked away quickly, disappearing down another corridor without so much as glancing back at Kai, clearly too humiliated to face him. Several of the watching students staggered backward as well, disbelief still etched clearly across their faces.
Mark calmly adjusted the collar of his school jacket, composing himself fully, before walking past Kai without a hint of concern, leaving the other boy staring after him, eyes narrowed in genuine, quiet surprise.
