The disciples at the outpost erupted in cheers. They had managed to blunt the enemy’s momentum. Even though it was just a Magical Clone, it was a Shadow Clone of Chi Qing, the Cyan Demon King, one of the Five Great Demon Kings. And during the fight, Master Zhang’s imposing yet teasing manner was a true morale booster.
Despite having repelled Chi Qing, Zhang Xiaojiang didn’t look particularly happy.
Anx Dao and Youn Yuqing were both excited. "Brother Zhang, thank goodness you were here! Otherwise, that female Demon would have actually managed to sneak in. For a mere clone to be so brazen, she really has some nerve. What is she trying to do? Why would she come personally? Could there be a huge conspiracy in the works?"
Zhang Xiaojiang shook his head slightly. "If that person truly was Chi Qing, she should have already reached a state where she can swap between the real and the illusory. Her main body could project itself over to the clone."
"Then she...?"
"Heh, the Demon Race is naturally suspicious, and Chi Qing is no exception. She couldn’t figure out why I was here and didn’t dare to take the risk. Still, we need to be on high alert for the time being."
Zhang Xiaojiang said. It seemed to be just as Wang Meng had said; all signs indicated that the Demon Race was stirring. While others were quite optimistic about their position, Wang Meng wasn’t optimistic at all.
Although the Demon Race’s momentum from the first year had been suppressed, for the past two years, they had been playing it safe and steady. A new round of terrifying battles was likely just around the corner. And quite unfortunately, Burning Castle had once again become their chosen breakthrough point.
Back then, Yuu Kunlun and the others had fought with their lives on the line to defend Burning Castle. Now, that responsibility rested on his shoulders.
Zhang Xiaojiang had experienced that battle himself. The fighting had truly been earth-shattering. Frankly, three years ago, they wouldn’t have been able to resist at all. But now?
Within the Cyan Demon Army, Chi Qing rested her chin on her hand, in a foul mood. Being teased by some sleazy fatso... When had she ever suffered such a humiliating loss?
Qiang Wan and Qiang Yu were Chi Qing’s two great Demon Generals. Seeing their master’s fury, they were clearly eager for action.
"Master, why wait for the Shadow Demon’s people? If the two of us brothers attack with our full strength now, we can flatten Burning Castle directly!"
"That’s right, Master! If the Shadow Demon arrives, won’t they just be trying to steal our credit?"
Qiang Wan and Qiang Yu were itching for a fight. For the past two years, they had been maintaining a slow-paced war of attrition. They didn’t dare oppose the grand strategy set by their superiors, but they were simmering with pent-up frustration.
Just as Chi Qing was about to scold them, a smile appeared on her face. The tent flap was pulled aside, followed by the sound of light footsteps.
"Fifth Sister, you’re here so soon. Your big sister is a little surprised."
The newcomer was the fifth of the Demon Kings, Chi Ying.
The two sisters, one dressed in black and the other in white, formed a stark contrast. They were indeed stunningly beautiful. These two Demon Princesses were admired by countless members of the Demon Race, and innumerable Demon Race Warriors wished to follow them.
The two sisters had always been rivals. Among the Demon Race, females were in a weaker position, but it was a different story among the nobility. There had been several Female Demon Lords in the past, though that was usually due to a lack of male heirs or other special circumstances.
"Big Brother gave an order. How could your little sister dare to be slow?"
"Heh, you can’t be careless on the Dragon Race’s front either. If that becomes the breakthrough point, Fifth Sister, the responsibility..."
"You jest, Big Sister. Your little sister has naturally made the proper arrangements. Reinforcements from the Abyss will arrive soon. I just wonder how well Big Sister has grasped the enemy’s situation."
Chi Ying said with a smile.
"Everything is under control." Chi Qing lifted her chin slightly, her tone leaving no room for doubt.
"Heh, but what’s this I hear about Big Sister’s first venture today being a failure?"
Chi Qing’s eyes sharpened, but then she broke into a sultry smile and took Chi Ying’s hand. "Little Sister truly commands the Demon Race’s foremost intelligence network. What do you think we should do about Burning Castle?"
Women were not to be trifled with, and women of the Demon Race were even more difficult. Chi Qing immediately countered by feigning a retreat to advance.
The power of the Demon Shadow that Chi Ying controlled was something everyone had to be wary of. The Demon Lord doted on this youngest daughter the most, entrusting the Demon Shadow to her. This was also what Chi Qing was most jealous of.
Chi Ying smiled. "Your little sister has only just arrived. How could I be as familiar with the enemy as Big Sister? That’s why I came specifically to listen to Big Sister’s teachings as soon as I got here."
Chi Qing nodded, leading Chi Ying by the hand into the inner chambers. Anyone who didn’t know better would have thought the two sisters were incredibly close.
Inside was Chi Qing’s private boudoir, still filled with the style of the Demon Race nobility—luxurious and warm. The Abyss Demon Race enjoyed heat, so the room was very hot. In this temperature, both women were clearly comfortable, and their already beautiful faces seemed to radiate even more light.
With no outsiders present, the two sat down. Chi Qing crossed her legs. "In terms of strength, Burning Castle is undoubtedly the weakest of the Star Alliance’s Five Great Castles. But in terms of backbone, the Human Cultivators here are the strongest. After fighting for so long, they’ve almost always fought to the point of complete annihilation. So, to deal with Burning Castle, the best method is a lightning-fast annihilation with overwhelming force, giving them no chance to resist. Dragging this into a protracted war is not to our advantage."
Chi Ying’s figure was much more petite. Her snow-white skin was flushed a slight pink from the heat, making her look tender enough to melt. Sitting in a wide chair, she liked to curl her slender legs up, appearing as delicate as if she couldn’t withstand a gust of wind.
"The prophetic abilities of the Ninefold Heaven are the most detrimental to our Demon Race’s grand plan. The Saintess is dead now, but in the past few years of fighting, don’t you think things haven’t gone as smoothly as we imagined?"
"Even if the Star Alliance Saintess were still alive, the gap in strength is right there. What could she possibly do? Besides, she’s already dead!"
Chi Qing said. From her words, it was clear the Demon Race had a considerable understanding of the Star Alliance’s situation and the abilities of some of its key figures.
"...Are you worried she left something behind before she died?" Chi Qing understood Chi Ying’s meaning.
Chi Ying smiled. "Perhaps. Can one really see fate? If so, she really should have done a better job of changing her own."
"That’s true. But back to the point, where do you think is Burning Castle’s breakthrough point?" Chi Qing’s gaze burned as she stared at her seemingly delicate little sister. Most members of the Demon Race, even those of the Demon Shadow Race, were rarely as fragile-looking as Chi Ying. But it was definitely just an act.
"Wang Meng."
"Wang Meng?" Chi Qing was stunned for a moment, then couldn’t help but laugh. "You don’t mean to say that Burning Castle’s weakness is Wang Meng, do you?"
Chi Ying nodded.
Chi Qing couldn’t help but laugh. "Fifth Sister, you might have gotten one thing wrong. The reason Burning Castle has been able to hold out these past two years is entirely thanks to this Wang Meng, and of course, that group of fearless bastards under him. Even though they’re the enemy, they’re much stronger than the humans on the other fronts."
Chi Qing wasn’t making excuses for herself. Publicly, she would certainly belittle her opponents, but there was no need for that here.
"Heh, Big Sister, I don’t mean to look down on him. According to my intelligence, among the five battlefronts, only two are the most stubborn. One is the Dragon Race front, where I was, and the other is Burning Castle, where you are. There’s no doubt this Wang Meng has some skill. The results are the same, but the reasons are completely different. The Dragon Race is stubborn because of their inherent strength, but Burning Castle is built on fragile, personal faith. What if Wang Meng were to die? What if Wang Meng were to become a Half-Demon?"
Chi Ying caressed her snow-white skin. It seemed that due to the high temperature, tiny beads of sweat were forming deep within her delicate skin.
Chi Qing nodded without hesitation. "So, Little Sister came today to volunteer for the mission?"
"Big Sister, your little sister came this time to help you with your troubles. I wonder if Big Sister would let me try first?"
Chi Ying asked, seemingly pleading.
Chi Qing’s gaze was fervent; that was a trait of the Cyan Demon. Her smile was brilliant. "Of course... you can."
’Why should I stop her?’
’Letting Chi Ying take the lead is a perfect way to probe Burning Castle’s trump cards. Of course, she knew what Chi Ying was planning. If Chi Ying really managed to take care of Wang Meng, the top honor would certainly be hers. But... if Wang Meng were really that easy to deal with, she wouldn’t have been so troubled herself.’
The two sisters each had their own plans. Chi Ying wanted to capture the king to catch the thieves, while Chi Qing preferred to overwhelm and flatten Burning Castle with superior forces in one fell swoop. It would just take some time to gather those superior forces, so why not let Chi Ying cause a little trouble first?
Chi Qing thought of her setback that evening, and the words on the tip of her tongue were swallowed back down. ’Tonight’s events were too much of a coincidence. Could it be that there’s a Star Alliance spy within the Demon Race?’
After leaving Chi Qing’s tent, Chi Ying was met outside by two incredibly handsome, even somewhat demonic-looking members of the Demon Race. These were Chi Ying’s two Demon Generals.
Tu Xin and Tu Gu.
"Master, what are your orders?"
Chi Ying rubbed her snow-white cheeks. "Let’s see if the Cultivators of Burning Castle are as tough as the legends say. The tougher they are, the more unstoppable their collapse will be."
After entering the seventh month, the war suddenly intensified. All Five Great Castles could clearly feel the Demons stirring. Over the next few months, the Demons launched a frenzied assault, with each attack more staggering in scale than the last.
The Star Alliance once again faced a severe test. The various Small Thousand Realms were also doing their best to mobilize Cultivators to the Great Yuan Realm. However, they needed to have a strength of at least the Thirtieth Layer of the Life Mark. To form a reliable fighting force, one needed to be at the Minor Perfection level.
Both sides were locked in a difficult stalemate.
The fighting at Burning Castle never let up. Battle is the best teacher, forcing people to mature quickly.
Zhang Xiaojiang’s encounter that day had served as a wake-up call for them, but when the brutal fighting truly began, it was another scene entirely.
Death wasn’t the most frightening thing.
Zhao Lingxuan and her group had already been in a grueling battle for seven consecutive days. The number of Demons near the outpost was growing, completely surrounding them. It wasn’t just their position; dozens of other outposts faced the same problem. The outposts were the eyes of the fortress. If they fell, Burning Castle would be forced entirely onto the defensive.
And in the city where Zhang Xiaojiang and the others were located, the situation was even worse. Outside the city walls were dense hordes of high-level Demons. The sky was dyed fiery red by Demon Flame, and the roars of Elemental Power and Demonic Qi soared into the heavens.
The Demon Race undoubtedly had the advantage in numbers, but the Star Alliance possessed formidable defensive fortifications. These Cultivation Cities had been perfected through constant battle in the Slaughter Space.
They had City Defense Arrays, Attack Techniques, and everything in between. Although supplies had been consumed rapidly over the past three years, all Five Great Castles had reserves. They wouldn’t easily bring out their last resorts unless absolutely necessary.
Bow Cultivators occupied advantageous positions, raining down volleys of arrows. Zhang Xiaojiang presided over Ironblood City, gazing at the Demon army outside. The scale of the army could be judged by the number of Demon Race members within it. The presence of such a large number of them meant this was no ordinary battle.
Besides its main body, Snow Moon City, Burning Castle also had three "arrowhead" cities: Ironblood City, Holy Shield City, and Flame City.
Zhang Xiaojiang, Hu Jing, and Li Tianyi defended Ironblood City. Yang Ying, Suo Ming, and Zhou Qian defended Holy Shield City. Xie Tianhua, Zou Chuang, Fan Hong, Song Yifan, and others defended Flame City.
