I Possessed The Worst Character In The Hellish Game
Chapter 48: The Spider’s Web [2]"The green-haired elf who saved us. Who was he? And why did he call Alice ’Saintess’?"
Mikael asked the question after a moment of hesitation.
He already knew who the elf was.
He had recognized the green hair and the ancient hazel eyes the moment the elf had appeared in the garden.
The elf was an NPC who appeared in nearly every route of Eclipsed Realms and was always ready to die for the Saintess he had sworn to protect.
But the second question--why he had called Alice Saintess was a genuine mystery for him.
It didn’t fit with anything he knew from the game.
Alice hadn’t even existed in the base version of the game.
He also had no idea if she was really an addition to the DLC or an anomaly.
That was also the reason why Mikael had mentioned how King Alistar and Headmaster Nicholas had been watching the fight from the shadows.
It was a deliberate move to earn some favourability points.
In the game, characters with high intelligence stats could earn favorability points with Nicholas by demonstrating sharp perception and deductive reasoning.
The old mage respected people who could see through deception and piece together hidden truths.
If that case also applied here, then Mikael had probably just scored a few favourability points from this old man.
Although his deduction wasn’t much, anyone with a little brain could do it.
But he still hoped it was enough to matter.
Nicholas didn’t answer immediately as his red eyes studied Mikael’s face for a moment before saying....
"That elf is Ryfon Nerivyre. He was the Guardian of Saintess Cecilia Hall, the Oracle of Dawn."
He paused, letting the words settle.
"As for why he called Alice the Saintess...." Nicholas continued, his voice taking on a heavier quality. "That is a matter I would strongly advise you not to pursue. Some truths carry weight that can crush a person at your current station. Understanding too much would also put you in danger....
"It’s for your own safety."
Mikael nodded slowly.
"I understand, Headmaster."
He hadn’t expected the old man to tell him everything in the first place, but....
’I still think I got the basic idea.’
"Good." Nicholas straightened in his chair as some of the seriousness lifted from his expression. "Now, I suggest you get cleaned up. Take a bath, eat some breakfast. Once you’re presentable, come find me in the next room. I’ll escort you to the royal treasury myself."
Mikael blinked.
"You’re personally taking me to the royal treasury?"
"Consider it a rare honor." The old man’s lips twitched in a smile. "I don’t usually play tour guide for young nobles, but I’ll make a special exception for you."
"Okay." Mikael said. "I’ll be there soon."
The old man nodded, and before Mikael could even blink, Nicholas vanished from his spot.
Mikael stared at the empty chair for a long moment before letting out a heavy sigh.
"Ahh, damn it."
He ran his hands through his bed hair, messing it up even further.
He dropped back onto the bed while his back hit the soft mattress with a gentle thump as he stared up at the ornate ceiling.
Ryfon Nerivyre.
The Guardian and Shadow of the Oracle of Dawn.
In Eclipsed Realms, Ryfon had been one of the most loyal NPCs in the entire game.
He had served Cecilia Hall for decades, following her across the Shattered Continents while protecting her from assassins, cultists, and anyone who sought to exploit her power.
In several routes, he had even died shielding her from attacks that were meant to kill her.
His devotion and loyalty were unquestioning.
And now the same person had knelt before Alice and called her Saintess.
The implications alone were.... staggering.
Mikael replayed the Headmaster’s words in his mind.
── He was the Guardian of Saintess Cecilia Hall, the Oracle of Dawn.
Nicholas had used the past tense-- ’was’ --rather than ’is.’
He didn’t think someone like Nicholas Hughes would make that kind of slip-up, who had lived for centuries and navigated the political waters of the Empire for most of that time.
In-game, every word he spoke was chosen with precision, and every sentence was weighted with meaning.
If he had used the past tense, then it had to be deliberate.
Of course, there was still a slim chance that Mikael was wrong--that Nicholas had simply grown old and careless, but that felt extremely unlikely.
However, if it were true then...
Something had happened to Saintess Cecilia Hall, who was also one of the game’s major NPCs.
Ryfon was far too loyal to her for any other explanation to hold.
That kind of devotion would not simply transfer just because another person happened to possess a similar ability to Cecilia’s.
The only way Ryfon would ever acknowledge someone else as the Saintess was if Cecilia no longer held that title.....
Whether through death, exile, or some other irreversible fate.
The thought settled coldly in Mikael’s chest, deepening the unease that had been building inside him ever since the Headmaster’s words first reached his ears.
It made sense when he thought about it.
There could only be one Saintess at a time.
The title carried too much weight—authority, political influence, and theological significance — for the Churches to ever allow it to be shared between two people.
If Alice was the new Saintess, then Cecilia must no longer be alive to hold that position.
But that logic only led to more questions.
Was this something that had always been part of the DLC’s story, or was it something entirely new?
He was only trying to solve one mystery, but instead, he had stumbled into a dozen more.
If Cecilia was truly dead, then who had killed her? How had it happened, and when?
Did the other churches know about her death, or were they still operating under the assumption that she was alive?
The more he thought about it, the more the attack from last night began to make sense.
The aberration hadn’t been sent to kill random nobles.
It had been sent for Alice—the next Saintess.
Someone had known she would be alone in that garden at that exact moment.
Someone had placed the creature there like a bomb and timed it to detonate when it could inflict the maximum possible damage.
Then it would also make sense why the system had given him the Emergency Quest to Save Alice — the new Saintess — from danger, specifically.
But the question was: how was that even possible?
She hadn’t even awakened her essence until the attack itself.
How could anyone have predicted that she would awaken Precognition—the ability to see the future and become the next Saintess?
More importantly, how could anyone have predicted that Alice would sneak out of the ballroom and wander into the garden alone?
That wasn’t something you could plan for.
It depended on a dozen small decisions--her decision to follow him, the distraction of the guards, the timing of the dancing--none of which could have been anticipated in advance.
Unless.... Unless they somehow had access to precognition of their own.
If the enemy had access to some kind of future-sight, if they could see the threads of fate unfolding before they happened, then....
He didn’t dare to complete the thought as his blood ran cold.
Nothing about this situation was simple anymore.
It was like standing at the edge of a vast web, knowing that every strand was connected to something larger and darker, yet unable to see the full shape of the spider that had spun it.
’This shit is far more complicated than I had initially thought.’
And he hadn’t even begun to consider the situation from the Church’s perspective.
Cecilia Hall had been a follower of the Nature Mother’s Church.
Ryfon’s presence here, his claim on Alice, suggested that the Nature Mother’s faithful saw the young princess as their next Saintess.
The successor to Cecilia’s legacy.
But Alice was a member of the royal family who had always followed the Goddess Sableth, the Lady of Night and Darkness, for generations.
The two Churches had coexisted peacefully for centuries, but that peace had always been built on a delicate balance of power.
If Alice truly was the next Saintess, then both Churches would try to claim her as their own.
The Nature Mother’s faithful would argue that her gift belonged to their tradition, that Cecilia’s successor should follow in her footsteps.
The Goddess Sableth Church would argue that Alice was their child, raised in their faith, bound to their goddess.
The political fallout alone could tear the Empire apart.
"Huu....."
Mikael closed his eyes as he let out a long breath, trying to calm his loudly beating heart.
He really needed to stop thinking about all of this.
His immediate focus should be solely on getting stronger.
Everything else could wait until he was actually capable of doing something about it.
That was what mattered right now.
Just as he was starting to push the thoughts aside, a sudden knock sounded at the door.
He sat up quickly as his muscles protested from the sudden movement.
"Who is it?"
The door swung open before he had even given permission to enter, and a familiar figure stepped inside.
’This world really doesn’t understand the concept of privacy.’
