I Reincarnated As A Dragon With A Devourer System
Chapter 18: Column Of SmokeA little over a day had already passed, and sunset was approaching once again.
During all that time, absolutely nothing happened, and, to Noir’s surprise, that didn’t bother him in the least.
In fact, the more time he spent in the village, the more he began to appreciate that almost absurd tranquility.
No giant monster suddenly appeared from behind a wall. No poisonous snake tried to make him its lunch.
It was a considerable improvement over the past few weeks.
As he rested under the enormous tree, now and then, a few goblins would approach to greet him with an exaggerated bow before going about their business.
’Now I understand celebrities; they have to go through all this.’
Noir had already given up trying to understand it. Apparently, to them, it was some sacred creature.
And honestly... he wasn’t going to correct them.
After all, he was a dragon. If he was going to get special treatment, he might as well take advantage of it.
As dusk approached, some hunters returned from an expedition into the forest.
They were carrying several animals on their shoulders and seemed pleased with their haul.
The goblin children immediately ran up to them and soon began telling each other exaggerated stories.
"It was huge!"
"Bigger than our huts!"
"It wasn’t that big."
"Of course it was!"
"No, it wasn’t."
"But it sounded huge!"
Noir watched the argument from a distance, with a mixture of indifference and warmth, but couldn’t help thinking.
’The goblins in this world really are different; I expected them to be violent monsters who only wanted to cause trouble, like the typical goblins in stories... but I was wrong.’
The hunter goblins puffed out their chests with pride as they recounted their hunts... Although the little black dragon wondered why he could understand them so easily.
’Could it be that I was reincarnated with some kind of automatic translator?’
***
Night had fallen once again, and just like the first time Noir had arrived, everything had gone smoothly.
...Well, not quite, since he was being treated like a celebrity.
He was eating at the moment, and, of course, the little dragon was given a huge portion of food.
Noir bit into a piece of juicy meat and wagged his tail with infectious enthusiasm. He loved meat.
The fat from the meat slid down his throat. He savored it as if a five-star chef had prepared it. He couldn’t understand how anyone could be a vegetarian.
’Meat is so delicious! God bless meat!’
Shaking his head and smiling, Noir finished his last bite.
’Those idiots don’t know what they’re missing.’
After satisfying his hunger and, most likely, depleting the goblins’ supplies,
The little black dragon lay down next to a tree in the center of the village, his stomach full and his wings slightly spread to enjoy the pleasant night breeze.
’This is the life I deserve.’
Even though I’ve said it before... important things need to be said twice.
The golden sphere floated above him in complete silence, something so unusual that Noir wagged his tail suspiciously.
’Why are you so quiet?’
The sphere traced small circles in the air.
That only served to heighten his suspicions.
’I don’t like that expression.’
The sphere blinked innocently and shot off toward a group of goblin children playing near a campfire.
Noir watched it go. A bad feeling began to creep through his scales.
The orb emitted playful flashes of light as it darted back and forth in front of the little goblins, leaving trails of light in its wake.
’No... no... no, NO! What the hell are you showing, you damn sphere!?’
The children’s eyes widened in fascination.
The little black dragon couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
It showed an exaggeratedly heroic version of Noir fighting the Poisonfang Serpent.
The little dragon was twice as big, its flames seemed capable of setting mountains ablaze, and the snake was even more enormous.
The children let out cries of amazement.
Noir felt his legs go numb.
"..."
The sphere wobbled as if it were laughing.
The fake Noir roared toward the sky, caused a gigantic explosion, and defeated the serpent with a single claw.
The little goblins began to look at him with genuine adoration.
One of them even seemed to be on the verge of tears.
’That’s not how it happened!’
The sphere continued to project images.
Now Noir appeared, emerging majestically from the cave as golden rays fell from the sky.
The little dragon covered his face with a claw.
’That definitely didn’t happen either!’
The sphere vibrated with satisfaction.
The children immediately ran toward him.
"Great Dragon!"
"Did you really defeat such a huge snake?"
"Can you destroy mountains?"
"Can you fly up to the stars?"
"How many monsters have you defeated?"
Noir stared at the golden sphere, outraged that it would display such a lie, realizing that that damned thing could also alter things as it pleased.
How unfair!
The sphere flickered innocently.
’Traitor.’
However, when he saw the little goblins’ eyes full of admiration, he didn’t have the heart to contradict them.
After all, he had defeated that snake.
The sphere’s account had been a bit exaggerated. Although, to be honest, it wasn’t that far from the truth.
’Well, maybe it exaggerated a little.’
The sphere did a triumphant spin.
One of the children approached timidly and placed a small hand on one of its scales.
Noir stood motionless.
Then another did the same.
And yet another.
Little by little, several small goblins gathered around him as the golden sphere projected their journey through the cave in an exaggerated manner.
Of course, that damn golden sphere didn’t leave out the part where it rolled downhill while trying to train. Nor the part where he almost died of fright.
The children began to laugh.
Noir tried to catch it.
The sphere easily dodged his bite.
The laughter grew even louder.
In the end, resigned, he lay back down under the tree while the little goblins curled up next to his wings.
It was strange.
Until recently, those goblins had been unknown monsters. Now he was beginning to recognize their faces, their voices, and their ways.
The little boy who was always asking him impossible questions.
The older woman who insisted on giving him more food.
The hunters who exaggerated their stories.
Even the village chief, who pretended to be serious but smiled every time he saw the children playing.
Noir looked up at the stars.
That warm feeling returned to his chest.
’Maybe I could stay a few more days.’
The idea came to him naturally.
Without realizing it, he had begun to think of the village as a place he could return to.
As a temporary home.
The golden sphere landed gently on one of his horns. It gave off a small, warm glow before coming to a standstill. For once, it simply remained there.
Then, one of the goblin hunters suddenly stood up. His relaxed expression vanished as he stared toward the forest.
Noir immediately sensed the change. His Draconic Senses expanded.
Something wasn’t right.
Several goblins followed the hunter’s gaze.
In the distance, above the treetops, a column of dark smoke rose slowly into the night sky.
He watched the column of smoke in silence.
For some reason, Noir felt a strange knot in his stomach.
