The sun’s rays filtered through the leaves of the trees; the forest looked different at that moment.

...Or perhaps it was Noir who had changed.

The small black dragon moved among the trees without a specific destination, parting branches and ferns with its tail.

Behind him, several kilometers away, a column of smoke continued to rise into the sky.

Perhaps all the goblins he had ever known were already dead, or perhaps just some of them had died... he had no way of knowing.

His mind kept repeating the same questions over and over.

Human children.

Goblins.

The village chief’s fear.

The hunters’ despair.

The children’s smiles during the festival.

Everything swirled around in his head until it became a chaos he couldn’t make sense of.

’Who was right?’

The question popped into his mind once again. And, for the first time since he had come to this world, he realized he didn’t want to know the answer.

Noir knew the answer wasn’t simple. No matter how hard he looked for it, in the end, it would all be just speculation. he didn’t know the whole story.

Maybe the humans had come to rescue their children.

Maybe the goblins had their own reasons—or maybe not.

Maybe none of them were completely innocent.

Maybe none of them were completely guilty.

Was it the right choice not to intervene? Or could he at least have helped him escape?

Noir let out a long sigh.

’The outside world is so complicated.’

In the books, manga, and novels he had read in his previous life, everything seemed much simpler. There were heroes and villains; there was always a right choice.

But... the reality was different—much more complicated, confusing... and uncomfortable.

’Great! Now I’m having philosophical thoughts after the massacre of a village...’ Noir let out a bitter laugh to himself.

Chrysola’s voice echoed briefly in his memory.

[You’ll see wonderful things.]

[You’ll also see terrible things.]

Noir looked down. Now he understood those words better.

The world was beautiful... well, the little he knew of it, beyond what he saw on a screen or in his own imagination. And terrifying, at the same time.

He wagged his tail in frustration; overthinking wasn’t his thing.

It had never been.

Besides, every time he remembered the faces of the goblin children or the look of relief on the soldiers’ faces when they found the human children, he felt a strange heaviness in his chest.

’I don’t like this feeling.’

Noir wanted to get rid of it; he needed a distraction.

The golden sphere appeared in front of him; he tried to touch it with one of his claws, but it moved out of the way.

’What’s wrong with you now, damn LED light?’

Moving his legs quickly, he tried to get closer, but the sphere always remained at the same distance, floating among the trees.

The little black dragon narrowed his eyes, not understanding why that damned sphere was avoiding him.

’Do you disagree with my decision?’

The golden sphere approached once more, but just as the little dragon’s claw was about to touch it, it moved out of the way.

’This damn traitor thinks this is a good time to play...’

Somewhat annoyed, Noir began chasing the golden sphere with the intention of devouring it; it was far too insensitive. It just didn’t understand his doubts!

Since it deserved a punishment, he wasn’t going to devour it; he just wanted to scare it a little and find out what the golden sphere tasted like.

Noir remembered that when he first met that traitor, it had done something quite similar... it was guiding him.

’Wait... Are you guiding me!?’

The little dragon stopped short, recalling his previous experiences, which had been anything but pleasant—they had been dangerous encounters. But he needed a distraction, so he followed the golden sphere through the forest.

Then, his Dragon Senses picked up on something in the underbrush.

The sound was deep and rhythmic.

Noir looked up a few meters away; a huge creature covered in gray fur was making its way through the trees. It looked like a cross between a wild boar and a wolf, with curved fangs and yellow eyes.

The beast hadn’t noticed him yet.

Noir’s red eyes narrowed. And, for the first time since he left the village, a small smile appeared on his face.

’Perfect.’

The golden sphere spun slowly as if it understood exactly what he was thinking.

The little dragon flexed his claws, and mana coursed through his body. The sadness, confusion, and doubts temporarily vanished.

Only one feeling remained.

Instinct, and emotion.

Because even though his mind was still human in many ways... he was a dragon.

A powerful and majestic creature, despite being a bit chubby... but those were minor, insignificant details, right?

Noir moved silently through the branches. His movements were much more fluid than they had been weeks ago.

The creature raised its head when it sensed something.

Too late.

The little dragon lunged forward, leaving deep claw marks in the damp earth; doubts could wait, and so could the answers.

For now, he just wanted to stop thinking. And if there was one thing he had learned since he was reincarnated into this world... it was that few things cleared the mind as much as a good hunt.

The little black dragon fell from the branch like a shadow. His claws pierced the monster’s thick fur, leaving three deep cuts in its side.

The monster roared in pain and lunged at him, fangs bared.

Noir, drawing on his experience, leaped backward, dodging the charge by just a few centimeters, feeling some saliva drip onto his black scales.

’Ugh... that’s gross.’

The monster crashed into a tree, causing it to shake and let out a pitiful screech.

’It’s definitely stronger than that rabbit.’ The thought crossed Noir’s mind as a small smile spread across his face.

For the first time since the destruction of the goblin village, his mind was clear.

The beast attacked again, this time more cautiously. Its muscles tensed, and it began to circle him slowly, looking for an opening.

Noir mimicked the movement.

His red pupils followed the monster’s every step as mana coursed through his limbs.

The wolf-boar roared and leaped.

The little dragon spun around and struck the creature’s snout with his tail.

The impact deflected its path just enough for Noir to sink his claws into its neck.

A heart-wrenching screech echoed through the trees. The beast tried to break free, thrashing violently, but the dragon did not let go of its prey.

One final tug echoed through the trees. The beast’s neck snapped, and its body fell heavily onto the grass.

Noir took a step back as he caught his breath.

The golden sphere spun around his head, casting tiny flashes of approval.

’I know, I know. I was amazing.’

The heaviness in his chest had eased a little.

Just a little.

Then, his Draconic Senses detected something again.

Several figures: the bushes began to stir; five pairs of yellow eyes appeared among the undergrowth... then ten more.

Creatures similar to the one he had just defeated slowly emerged from among the trees.

A pack.

Noir looked at the bodies surrounding him. And for the first time in several minutes, he stopped smiling.

’...I think I just killed the wrong member of the family.’
