The leaves rustled gently in the afternoon breeze.

Hidden among the branches of a massive oak tree, a young black dragon lay completely still.

His dark scales blended into the shadows of the foliage, while his red eyes followed every movement in the small village.

"..."

It was the first time he’d seen a new person in that human village he’d been watching for a week.

Noir hadn’t approached them for obvious reasons... he wasn’t human, and was he disappointed? Of course not! He’s a dragon! Why would he want to be human again?

But in the short time he had been observing the settlement, there were no massive walls, no knights on patrol, and no wizards casting spells everywhere.

...Just people.

Some were repairing fences. Others were carrying sacks of wheat; several women were chatting as they hung laundry out to dry in the sun, and children were running through the dirt streets, chasing each other.

And honestly, the young black dragon was a letdown; he had expected something more epic and magical, like in generic isekai stories, where magic and magical creatures abound.

Or perhaps he was simply in a somewhat rural area where the magic of this world didn’t reach his eyes.

Noir slowly rested his chin on the branch. His attention turned to a figure that stood out completely from the rest.

A young woman with silver hair was walking across the square, trying to keep a serious expression. She was wearing a huge sorceress’s hat, and a long white tail swayed behind her. And two ears of the same color stuck out from her hair.

Noir blinked and looked again.

"..."

"Wow..."

He tilted his head slightly as he began to bare his teeth, which threatened to take on a menacing look.

"This is exactly what I meant: a real half-human, too, who seems clumsy, hehehe. Now it really feels like a whole different world."

The golden sphere didn’t hesitate for a second to make its magnificent entrance, as if it were the star of the show, and quickly flashed several times and spun back and forth.

The young dragon followed it with his gaze as it moved from side to side, until a vein popped out on his forehead; he lashed out at her with his claw in frustration.

"Who do you think I am? How could I fall in love just by seeing her once? I’m not like that!"

However... the golden sphere didn’t seem to believe him in the least and kept teasing Noir, just as it would tease a child who says, "You have a girlfriend, and you kiss, and you love each other."

The young dragon tried to ignore it, but it was impossible... it was just too annoying. He activated his Devourer ability and lunged to devour the golden sphere.

And it was a complete failure: the golden sphere was too slippery for Noir to devour.

"Tsk! Someday I’ll devour you." Annoyed at having wasted his energy for nothing, he turned his attention back to the human settlement.

He watched the half-human pace back and forth, talking to the villagers; her ears twitched every time someone said her name, and her tail also seemed to have a life of its own.

Noir felt a completely absurd doubt begin to take root in his mind.

’I wonder... Will she let me touch her ears?’

He froze, as if he’d just realized what he’d been thinking: Are you going to touch a stranger’s ears? That would be really weird.

’...I don’t even know her. How could she let me touch her ears? That’s completely absurd.’

The young dragon nodded, convinced, and tried to push those thoughts aside with reason and logic; he was no longer the same dragon he used to be. He had evolved!

Five seconds later...

’...Although they look like they’d be very soft.’

The golden sphere floating beside him emitted a long, resigned flash, as if it had just remembered that the young dragon was warm-blooded.

"What?" Noir cleared his throat. "I’m not saying anything weird—I’m just curious."

The sphere flashed again, much brighter this time.

"Hey! Aren’t you curious? You can’t tell me you’ve never wondered what a wolf’s ears feel like."

The sphere spun slowly, then moved a few centimeters away, as if to make it very clear that it didn’t know that dragon.

Noir let out a sigh.

"You’re so dramatic..."

***

The afternoon gradually faded away.

The last rays of the sun bathed the rooftops of the small town in orange before disappearing. Shortly afterward, a peaceful darkness began to spread across the wheat fields.

The windows of the houses lit up one by one.

The aroma of freshly cooked food wafted into the forest, mingling with the scent of damp earth.

From the branch where he was hiding, Noir watched the scene in silence and let out a small sigh.

"I guess that’s how the world should be."

Nothing had happened; he’d expected the half-human to head toward the forest or something like that, but it didn’t happen.

Uki, lying on another nearby branch, yawned lazily before tucking his head between his paws.

Even the golden sphere remained motionless.

The calm lasted only a few minutes.

Noir’s Draconic Senses suddenly kicked in. His pupils contracted; he slowly turned his head toward the forest on the other side of the village.

Something... was approaching.

And it was coming very fast.

The treetops began to sway one after another. Something enormous was plowing through the forest without the slightest regard.

Uki also immediately raised his head; his white fur began to bristle as a low growl escaped his throat.

Noir watched in silence. In the darkness, he could barely make out a huge silhouette moving at full speed.

He couldn’t see her clearly. For a few seconds, he did absolutely nothing and just kept watching.

’It doesn’t seem to be coming for me.’

The creature hadn’t even changed direction.

Its goal was clear.

The town.

Noir slowly turned his gaze toward the lights shining between the houses.

He could warn them.

But... after a few seconds of silence, he shook his head.

"No."

Uki looked at him again.

"It’s not our problem; we don’t even know what kind of creature it is."

The white wolf stood motionless for a few seconds, then slowly relaxed his body. He, too, understood what that meant.

Noir was no hero. He had never claimed to be one! He took one last look at the town lights.

’Besides... they have a mage.’

He thought of the young woman with silver hair who had arrived that afternoon. That situation was precisely the reason she had come to the village. He, on the other hand, was just a young dragon trying to survive.

Noir slowly spread his wings.

"Let’s go."

Without waiting for a reply, he silently climbed down from the branch. His feet made barely a sound as they touched the leaf-covered ground.

Uki landed beside him a moment later.

The golden sphere also descended, casting a faint light on the path that wound its way through the trees.

Without looking back... the three of them began to venture into the darkness of the forest.

Behind him, the enormous shadow continued to approach the village.

And, a few seconds later... A heart-wrenching scream shattered the silence of the night.
