After getting his new guide, Noir turned around; he hadn’t forgotten about the monster’s corpse that had scared away his dinner.

Before he could begin, the golden sphere appeared right in front of his face and began to emit a series of annoying flashes, as if to remind him that she was the guide and that he didn’t need another one.

The smile on the young black dragon’s face widened even more, revealing all his sharp teeth, like those of a shark.

"So my magnificent guide is jealous of a half-human. Who would have thought?"

The golden sphere was clearly dissatisfied and didn’t seem to like where things were headed.

"Okay, I know. Don’t worry. I know how important you are. You’re my first friend..." Noir lowered his head for a moment, then raised it again, flashing an even bigger smile: "But if you want, you can go back to Chrysola or Amanises. Arlene will be my guide now."

The golden sphere remained motionless for exactly one second.

Then...

FLASH!

It began to burst into golden flashes and whirled around Noir like a tiny, completely out-of-control comet.

"Hey, hey! What are you doing?"

Noir raised both arms as the small sphere bumped against his forehead, horns, and even his nose with tiny, glowing nudges.

"Hey! That counts as an attack!"

The sphere responded by speeding up even more. The flashes became so rapid that they practically formed a ring of light around the dragon.

Noir burst out laughing.

"Are you that jealous?"

The sphere came to an abrupt stop. It hovered right in front of his face and emitted a single flash. A very bright one that gave the young black dragon a little tap right on the forehead.

Tok.

"Ouch!"

Noir clutched his head with a claw as he stared at it in disbelief. He had felt the blow from the golden sphere. How was that possible? He had never felt it before.

"There was no need to resort to violence."

The sphere spun around him once more, clearly indignant.

Noir shook his head, unable to hold back a smile, raised a claw, and pointed first at the sphere.

"Don’t worry. You’re my first guide and companion."

Then he pointed to Arlene.

"She’ll just be my guide in the human world."

He paused briefly before adding as if it were the most natural thing in the world:

"They’re different categories."

The sphere remained motionless for a few seconds; it seemed to be thinking. Then it emitted a small flash... much gentler.

"See? That’s better."

Then it tapped him on the forehead again.

Tok.

Noir sighed.

"I guess that means it’s still angry."

He approached the body; dark blood seeped slowly among the shattered roots as the forest gradually returned to silence.

The young dragon watched the monster for a few seconds and muttered to himself:

"I guess I did end up getting dinner after all."

Uki let out a satisfied bark and began wagging his tail.

Arlene, on the other hand, frowned slightly.

"...What is he doing?"

Noir ignored her and activated his unique ability; before literally devouring him, he prepared to do so.

After devouring the monster, Noir let out a satisfied sigh; his stomach felt full.

Then... notifications began to pop up one after another.

The young dragon’s pupils glowed intensely. He possessed two very useful abilities: moving through the shadows and concealing his presence.

They suited him perfectly; Noir was even somewhat grateful that the monster had attacked him, because with these two abilities he had gained, he could go unnoticed.

This will allow you to explore this world much more, without so many complications.

’Wait for me, my demon princess; this dragon will find you soon. Hahahahaha!’

The moon continued to light the path as the three of them slowly left the scene of the battle.

The forest had regained some of its tranquility.

All that remained were a few shattered trees, the enormous crater where the monster had fallen, and a handful of withered flowers that the wind was slowly carrying away among the leaves.

Arlene was walking a few steps behind.

No, not because she was suspicious, but because she still didn’t know how to behave around a dragon. Every few seconds, she glanced up at Noir.

Then she would immediately lower it again. Her head was a complete mess.

’Dragons exist...’

’No... that can’t be.’

’But I’m walking right behind one. What if I’m dreaming?’

She gripped the staff lightly in her hands. Ancient tales described dragons as proud, violent, and almost divine beings.

Creatures capable of destroying entire armies. But the one walking in front... had just argued with a golden sphere.

Arlene didn’t know what to think.

Behind them, Uki was sniffing the ground as if nothing were wrong, completely oblivious to the existential crisis the young half-human was going through.

The golden sphere fluttered around the white wolf for a few seconds before returning to Noir.

Silence continued to surround them.

Surprisingly... it wasn’t uncomfortable.

After several minutes, the trees began to thin out. Through the trunks, they could already see the first lights of the small village.

Several torches lit up the palisade.

Some villagers were still awake.

The voices sounded muffled by the distance.

Arlene immediately slowed down, and her breathing changed as well.

The young black dragon barely turned his head.

"What’s going on?"

Arlene discreetly pointed toward the lights.

"We’ll have to go our separate ways from here; if they saw you, they’d think you were a monster."

The young dragon looked toward the village.

"I understand."

Arlene watched him for a moment. She had expected him to press the issue. Or to ask why, but he accepted it. That, somehow... put her mind at ease a little.

Noir looked back at the human settlement.

"Tomorrow."

The young woman took a second to understand.

"T-tomorrow?"

"I need you to show me this world."

Arlene let out a small sigh.

She still didn’t understand how she had ended up becoming the guide for a legendary dragon.

But she could ask herself that later.

Right now... all she wanted was to go back to the village, make sure everyone was okay, and get a few hours of sleep.

Although she suspected that tonight... sleep would be impossible.
