I Reincarnated As A Dragon With A Devourer System
Chapter 58: Should I devour them too?The clanging of swords already echoed through the air as several guards tasked with protecting the carriages fought the bandits.
Noir was on the roof of the carriage, watching everything with some interest. From there, he had a perfect view.
It was the first time he’d seen bandits acting like bandits, since he was a reincarnated soul and the real thieves wore suits and ties. They always took a hefty cut in the name of the glorious "taxes."
In his mind, the scene was clear: an army of bureaucrats dressed in black suits, attacking him like highwaymen—only instead of swords, they used official stamps and folders.
’A tax for breathing, a tax for existing, a tax for having a pretty face... What’s next? A tax for signing your name?’
He shook his head, and with resignation, the young black dragon felt truly grateful to have been reincarnated in this world, not to have been miraculously healed, and to have the ability to travel between worlds.
’Well, it wouldn’t be such a bad idea... and I would have become a Dimensional Traveler.’
Noir shook his head and turned his attention to the battle with the bandits, which, so far, was turning out to be far less exciting than the manga had promised.
There was no princess.
Nor was there a kingdom on the brink of collapse.
Just a group of armed men trying to rob a carriage.
’False advertising.’
Beside him, Uki lay with his head resting on his front paws.
The wolf watched the bandits with his ears pricked, though he didn’t yet seem to consider them a threat.
The golden sphere floated peacefully behind them.
Below, the situation was very different.
The coachman was breathing faster and faster as he clutched the reins tightly.
Arlene had already stepped down from the carriage.
The young woman took a few steps until she was standing in front of the horses.
She held her cane firmly in both hands. She watched as the bandits continued to approach.
’She’s changed.’
Noir noticed it right away.
The clumsy girl who had tripped in front of the whole town seemed to have disappeared. Her ears were still twitching nervously, and her tail couldn’t hide her tension either.
But her eyes... were completely different.
The bandits who weren’t fighting slowly surrounded the carriage.
The man with the enormous axe advanced a few more meters.
"Listen carefully. Leave behind all your goods, coins, and any magical items you’re carrying."
A sinister smile appeared beneath the scar that ran across his face.
"And maybe no one will have to die today."
The coachman swallowed hard.
Arlene took a small step forward.
"We’re not carrying any goods."
The man burst out laughing.
"Then it’ll be even easier."
His gaze drifted down to the staff the young woman held.
"A sorceress... That staff is worth quite a bit of money."
Behind him, several bandits began to laugh.
Noir tilted his head slightly.
’How predictable.’
It seemed that none of them had noticed something obvious.
Ever since Arlene stepped down from the carriage... she hadn’t stopped gathering mana. Green runes were beginning to form beneath her feet.
The bandits kept talking.
’She’s waiting.’
Noir smiled with interest. He hadn’t expected the half-human to be so patient.
She was setting the stage.
Suddenly... Arlene thrust the tip of her staff forcefully into the ground.
The sound was so soft it almost went unnoticed.
But Noir’s eyes lit up.
The mana that had been building up all that time vanished into the ground.
’...What is she doing?’
His Draconic Senses followed the invisible current. The mana flowed beneath the meadow as if it were roots growing beneath the grass.
And it continued to spread.
The bandits didn’t seem to have noticed a thing.
Noir, on the other hand, smiled with genuine excitement.
’Now then... Show me what the magic of the demi-humans can do.’
***
The reptilian mounts roared in unison.
Arlene didn’t flinch. The staff tapped the ground gently once more, and the runes began to spin one after another.
Noir watched from the ceiling of the carriage, never taking his eyes off her.
’A different kind of structure.’
For a moment, absolutely nothing happened.
Then... the meadow burst into bloom. Hundreds of tiny white flowers sprang up all around the bandits.
They covered the grass as if they had been waiting for that moment for years.
The men burst out laughing.
"Flowers?"
"Is that all?"
"The sorceress wants to decorate the path!"
One of them spurred his mount, and the enormous reptilian beast leaped forward.
Arlene slowly raised her staff and said in a flat voice.
"Blooming Chains."
The flowers burst open all at once. Dozens of thorn-covered vines shot up from the ground.
Three mounts were immediately immobilized.
The enormous beasts roared as they tried to break free.
Two bandits were torn from their mounts when the roots grabbed hold of their legs.
Another one managed to cut several vines.
’She’s restricting their movements.’
Noir tilted his head slightly.
She wasn’t trying to defeat them with a single attack. She was forcing them to lose their mobility. But... there were just too many bandits.
The man with the axe let out a roar.
"Break through!"
Several swords began hacking at the roots. The mounts used their massive claws to tear them apart. In mere seconds, the formation began to break.
Arlene took a step back. The runes were already rearranging themselves again.
Noir sighed.
’Hmm... There’s going to be more magic.’
"But..."
He looked around. The bandits were still closing in; one was circling the carriage. Another was trying to reach the coachman.
Two others were aiming their crossbows.
’This is starting to get annoying.’
Noir stretched, like an extremely lazy cat; he wanted to keep watching, but he didn’t want to go through the whole cliché.
Uki also looked up.
"Shall we go?"
The wolf replied with a soft bark.
Noir smiled. His black wings slowly unfolded; no one saw him because of his low presence.
"This is very useful."
The bandits remained completely focused on the mage.
Until a shadow fell over them.
One of them looked up.
"Wh—?"
He didn’t finish his sentence. Noir landed right on top of the first mount, and the creature vanished under the impact.
The ground caved in several centimeters. The bandit was hurled several meters before crashing into a rock.
Everyone turned their heads.
"..."
"..."
The man with the axe reacted first.
"What the hell...?"
Noir slowly raised a claw, and his red eyes swept over the group.
"Excuse me. I need to continue my journey."
He vanished. It wasn’t speed, but rather his newly acquired ability, [Movement of Shadow]. For a split second, his figure blended into the shadow cast by one of the mounts.
He appeared behind another bandit. The man’s head was severed before he could even comprehend what had happened.
The next one barely managed to raise his crossbow.
CRACK!
The claw pierced through wood, steel, and flesh all at once.
Uki appeared like a white flash. His fangs sank into the throat of another enemy.
The man fell without making a single sound. The others tried to flee.
Noir walked. Each step seemed slower, but he always found himself right in front of the next one.
The horse riders began to scatter, the bandits dropped their weapons, and in less than a minute... all that could be heard again was the wind.
Noir looked at the bodies scattered across the meadow.
’...’
His gaze slowly drifted downward. Noir remained lost in thought, staring at one of the human corpses.
’Monsters grant me abilities and racial traits...’
’Humans too...?’
The young dragon tilted his head slightly. He felt neither aversion nor enthusiasm.
...Just curiosity.
’...Should I devour them too?’
